What is CGS

Formed over 12 years ago, CGS as a company supportsits members’ guarantees by arranging for them to beinsured, at the request of the customer, by MillburnInsurance Co Ltd, a UK based FSA authorised andregulated insurance company. A small one-off fee canbuy insurance for up to 20 years for remedial timbertreatment, damp treatment, wall ties and lateralrestraints, up to 12 years for Shire Piling and up to 10years for structural waterproofing* and QuickBase.

All CGS contractors are independently vetted and onlycontractors showing a high degree of technicalcompetence, full knowledge of Health and SafetyRegulations to protect the customer and financialstability over several years or have been otherwisefinancially approved, are eligible for membership andable to offer the security of insurance.

CGS offer insured guarantees with an insurancecertificate specific to your property and issued by an FSAauthorised and regulated UK insurance company. 70%of all contractors go out of business within 20 years and, though CGS contractors are considerably below thenational average, because of the quality of thecontractors allowed into membership, for a very smallone-off premium you can insure against even thiseventuality.

All CGS contractors have achieved what are probablythe hardest approval standards in the industry, ensuringthat members have an enviable position within theindustry. They are held in the highest respect amongstspecifiers, local authorities, housing associations, church councils and national institutions.

*or such shorter period as specified in thecontractor's guarantee.

WARNING

Many contractors offer “insurance-backed” guaranteesbut this is invariably an annual insurance in the name ofthe guarantee company, does not relate to your propertyand if the annual fee is not paid then no protection is inplace. If it dosen’t include IPT ( Insurance Premium Tax)it isn’t insurance.

CGS is an Appointed Representative of MillburnInsurance Company Limited and is a regulated companyunder the Insurance Mediation Directive 2000.

Recently, new courses on the subjects ‘Cavity Walls’ and‘Condensation and Dampness in Buildings’ have beenadded to the syllabus.

Examinations

As well as training, the PCA also offers examinations,which lead to the following nationally recognisedqualifications;

• Certificated Surveyor in Remedial Treatment (CSRT)• Certificated Surveyor in Structural Waterproofing (CSSW)• Technician’s Exam• Assessed Surveyor in Remedial Treatment qualification

(ASRT).

This is a qualification awarded on the basis of practicalassessment rather than an examination.

Examination Support

Preparation courses are provided which allow students, especially those who have not taken examinations forsome time, the opportunity to practice. With advice andguidance from experts in the industry, every student isoffered support and encouragement to reach their fullpotential.

Training Course FiveCavity Wall Tie Repair

Cavity walls have been a common feature of buildings inthe UK for over one hundred years. Two leaves of brickor stonework are held together using metal straps or‘wall ties.’ The cavities between the two leaves ofmasonry provide an effective barrier to waterpenetration and also act as an insulation layer.

In some circumstances these wall ties can corrode orfail. Failure can manifest itself as cracking in theexternal leaf of masonry, structural movement, or insevere cases, the collapse of sections of masonry.

To combat this problem, repair strategies have beendeveloped. These usually involve the installation of newremedial wall ties through the outside leaf of masonryinto the internal leaf. The original wall ties are thenremoved or isolated from the structure to prevent furtherdamage to the building. In some special circumstances,it may be possible to leave the existing ties in place.

Subjects include:Structural RestraintThis definition covers a great number of structuralrepair techniques that can be utilised to repair orrestrain masonry walls. Unwanted movement can occurin buildings for a great many reasons, these mayinclude:

• Ground movement or subsidence.• Inadequately restrained or tied walls.• Movement brought on by water ingress and timber

decay into the structure.• Failed lintels or building materials.• Movement fatigue.• Mechanical impact or disturbance.

In all these examples a structural surveyor mayrecommend some form of mechanical restraint as partof the remedial repair

Training Course FourTimber Resin Repair

Resin repairs to timber are being carried out more widely. This is because contractors are recognising the economiesof a ‘low disturbance’ approach to in-situ repair, as opposedto the more established ‘scrap and replace’ practices –increasingly deemed wasteful of valuable materials, aswell as being responsible for the unnecessary destructionof many historic structures. This one-day course provides apractical insight into the methods and materials used in therepair of timbers.

Course Programme• Introduction – A brief history of resins and their uses• Research and Development• Selling the Low Disturbance approach to Specifiers,

Engineers, Architects, Builders, Listed Home Ownersand Public Buildings.

• Examples and Job Costs• The Materials – Demonstration• The Sales Opportunities• Type A and B Repairs• TRS Type Repairs and Practical• Surveying and Measuring• Sales Tools, Materials and Media

Training Course SixThor Helical Surveyors’ Training Course

This two day course provides an introduction tomasonry defects, their diagnosis and the preparation ofappropriate remedial schemes using Thor HelicalRemedial Systems and Shire Piles and Stabilizers. Thecourse also includes sessions on identifying marketopportunities, estimating and costing projects and theproduction of digital overlay project designs on schemephotographs using the Serif DrawPlus design package.

On successful completion of the course, delegates willbe provided with Thor Helical Remedial ApprovedSurveyor Certification.

Qualification of Thor Remedial Surveyors is one of therequirements for contractors wishing to attain “ThorHelical Remedial Approved Contractor” status whichcarries the associated benefits of project insurance, listing and accreditation on the Thor Helical web siteand project leads via Thor Helical marketing activities.

The course is accredited by the ABE – Associationof Building Engineers

Training Course SevenTechnicians’ Training Course

Provides information and guidance to technicians withsome experience, or those embarking on a career in theremedial industry with enough background knowledgeon the common and recognised industry methods ofattending to damp-proofing and timber treatmentproblems that occur in buildings.

The PCA uses experts recognised for their experience oftraining industry operatives and technicians, for thisone-and-a-half-day course.

Subjects include:• Introduction• Health & Safety: Assessments and PPE• DPC Installation: Theory and practical• Pressure Injection: high and low• Injection Mortar• Transfusion

Timber Treatments• Wood Boring Insects: Roof Voids & Floor Treatment• Fungal Decay: dry and wet rot

Technician TrainingExam optional, separate booking on the afternoon of thesecond day.
