Inside this issue: event of the year on December 12, at the
Wyndham Hamilton Park Hotel
in Florham Park. This is our Annual General Meeting.
Our esteemed speakers will be Hugh Trumbull III, AIA from
KPF, and John Ike AIA of Ike Kligerman Barkley Architects.
Additionally, the evening will
include a book signing by Howard Horii, FAIA. Truth
in the Rivers features watercolors painted by Horii,
some of which depict the
internment camp in Arizona where he, his family, and
thousands of other Japanese Americans were relocated
during World War II.
And as is tradition, we will be
collecting toys for the annual

evening November 15th. See the related story in this issue.
Simon Malls graciously offered the venue again this year for
the third year in a row. Jack Purvis AIA, AIA NJ
President, Stephen Schwartz,
AIA and Tim Vogel of the Community Food Bank of New
Jersey were the guest judges. They had a difficult time
deciding on the winners and
even asked mall-goers for their favorites.
AIA Newark Suburban Design Competition boards were also
displayed in the Mall corridor for public viewing.
We look forward to seeing
everyone at our next and final
Toys for Tots drive. Please bring an (unwrapped) toy for
the drive.
Lastly, as the year comes to a close I would like to thank the
AIA Newark Suburban Board and Trustees for their hard
work and ongoing support of the organization: a job well
done. I would also like to
congra tu la te incoming President John Cwikla, AIA
and wish him the best of luck.

At the end of December, I complete my
term as AIANJ Regional Director. There is much to reflect back upon. As to what
was accomplished and built upon in the term completed before me by David Del
Vecchio, AIA, I can say that I had BIG
shoes to fill. I am not sure that I was able to complete the all of tasks. Only time will
tell. The work that a National Board member has to do in the short time he/she
has on this esteemed gathering of your National leaders seems never ending. Well,
that is just fine, for Robert Cozzarelli, AIA is
poised to jump right into these very same BIG shoes as he becomes your new
Regional Director in January. Knowing Bob as I do he will be as hard working and as
dedicated as those who came before him.
Bob’s tenure will mean that AIA Newark and Suburban Architects have provided
three of the last six Regional Directors to
the National Board. There is no doubt in my mind that this fact says something
about the training one receives from AIA Newark Suburban Architects. However, we
can not do it alone. Our success comes from the help of the membership and this
leads me to the following:
Fifty years ago, we tragically lost a young President when John F. Kennedy was
assassinated in Dallas. During this
anniversary and as I write this today is the 150th anniversary of President Lincoln’s
Gettysburg Address, there has been much
ASK, HERE and NOW…Important Words to Consider!
talk about both of these great Presidents and
what might have been. My memories of President Kennedy and his leadership are still
fresh in my mind. Most especially his many speeches and particularly in his inaugural
where he asked his fellow citizens: “Ask not
what your country can do for you -ask what YOU can do for your country!”
President Lincoln’s words in his address were repetitive and if you re-read the speech, in
the cadence of the rhythm in which he spoke it, Mr. Lincoln places one in what months
before was a great field of battle.
Ultimately, both speeches are a simple arrangement of words like “ask,” “here” and
“now.” When put together creatively into
simple phrases, they provide a sense of power. So in honor of these two important
speeches in our history, I would start by asking you to here and now to make the
commitment to support all AIA leaders and
their work on your behalf so that our collective voices can be heard in Trenton and
in Washington. I end with two other
important simple words:
Thank you!
Jerry Jerome Leslie Eben, AIA
AIANJ Regional
Director, ’11-‘13
Work-on-the-Boards is a monthly survey conducted by the AIA's Economics and Market Research
group. The survey of firm principals and partners allows participants to track business conditions as they change. Participation enables you to compare your firm to others, track the economy and
local business conditions, and use data to target business opportunities.
The panel is open to any AIA member who is principal/partner of their firm. The survey is administered completely online, and you will receive an invitation to participate the first week of
each month. Participants also receive a special announcement before the report is available to the general public each month, in the AIArchitect.
If you are a firm principal or partner and would like to join the survey panel or for more information, please e-mail [email protected]. You may also join the panel by completing the background information form.

15th Annual CANstruction 2013 Competition
Exceeds Expectations
AIA Newark & Suburban, together with AIA
NJ, hosted the 15th Annual New Jersey edition of the CANstruction Design & Build
competition November 14th through November 17th at the Livingston Mall, in
Livingston, NJ. As most readers know,
CANstruction is a unique nationally chartered food charity program that calls upon teams
of architects and designers to design and build giant-sized structures made entirely
from canned and packaged food.
The 2013 CANstruction program was a great
success, exceeding pre-event goals. This year 35,730 pounds of canned of food
and more than $10,000 was donated to the Community Food Bank of New
Jersey (CFBNJ). CFBNJ is the largest food
bank in the state, distributing food and groceries to more than 1,500 nonprofit
programs that assist more than 900,000 people in 18 New Jersey counties.
CANsruction showcases the creativity, the compassion and the creative spirit of
architects and designers. The firm sponsored teams are the hero’s of this important event.
The event could not happen without the
commitment, inspiration, and funding that the seven teams put forth – they deserve
commendation. The following seven NJ firms participated in this year’s competition:
DeBiasse & Seminara Architects
Gensler Morristown
Milrose Consultants
Tricarico Architecture & Design
LWDMR Architects
NK Architects
Solutions Architecture
All of the teams were winners for their
inspiring creations. In accordance with Cansruction, Inc. guidelines, the structures
were judged on six categories, including: “Judges’ Favorite,” “People’s Choice,”
”Honorable Mention,” “Structural Integrity,”
“Best Meal,” and “Best Use of Labels.”
The three distinguished guest judges for this year’s competition each had a connection to
the event. Jack Purvis, AIA, is President of
AIA NJ and is a shore-based architect who has been very active in post-Sandy design
a n d b u i l d i n g i n i t i a t i v e s . Stephen W. Schwartz, AIA, is a past
president of AIA Newark & Suburban Architects. As a local architect with his
residence and office in Livingston Stephen is
literally is the hometown judge. Stephen’s own LEGO student design-build programs
share some of the attributes of CANstruction. Lastly, Tim Vogel, CFR, the CFBNJ Director of
Food Sourcing returned as lead judge.
With the theme “NJ Shore CAN Rebuild,” this
year’s program sought to challenge teams to build shore-themed structures that paid
homage to New Jersey’s Sandy hurricane-
battered coastline.
The Gensler Morristown team took home two of the event’s awards, “Judge’s Favorite” and
“Best Use of Labels” for its 9,966 can “Jersey
Shore CAN Roll with It” structure — a giant skee ball replica. NK Architects, also from
Morristown, took home the coveted “People’s Choice” award for its “NJ Shore CAN Come to
the Rescue” display, which was a life-sized
lifeboat model assembled with 9,175 cans, bottles and bags of food.
Rostrum Frequency Update Remember the new beginning in 2014 for the Rostrum? The format
will change to (sort-of) quarterly. Planned issues are late January (deadline for receipt of e-mailed content is 20 January 2014), as well
as releases in late April, September and November. But, really, we want to hear from you as to the utility and relevance of this format in
your professional life. We continue to be interested in providing great
content about the work of our members and to feature a more in-depth reporting of issues that relate to us as architects, emerging,
evolving, and elder. Take a four question survey and help us out!

CANstruction The “Honorable Mention” award was
presented to De Biasse and Seminara Architects, based in Martinsville, N.J., which
cleverly presented a beachfront scene with a house on piles titled “Smarter than the
Storm.” Solutions Architecture, based in
Newark, N.J., was awarded the “Best Meal” honor for its “Building Memories” design,
which drew inspiration from the Fun Time amusement pier. The “Structural Integrity”
award was given to Tricarico, a Wayne, N.J.-based architectural firm, for their curvilinear
“Back to the Boardwalk #njstrong.”
Milrose Consultants illuminated lighthouse
structure titled “Beacon of Light” recreated a very recognizable Long Beach Island icon.
First time CANstruction entrants, LWDMR
Architects, “Knock ‘Em Down and Build ‘Em Up” structure replicated another popular
boardwalk game. Their structure suffered a partial collapse at 90% completion and still
they were able to recover and “re-canstruct”
the full structure within the 12-hour time limit.
The structures remained on display for the
long weekend after which they were
dismantled by a large crew of food bank volunteers and shipped to CFBNJ’s
warehouse for donation to New Jersey
residents in need. Some photos of the event
are included in this edition of the Rostrum, additional images are posted on the AIA NS
C A N s t r u c t i o n w e b p a g e a t http://aians.org/canstruction/.
Thanks go out to our AIA NS sponsors and the numerous sponsors that donated to the
teams and to the food bank. Additionally, Simon Property Group® generously made
available its Livingston Mall again as the host
venue for the event. Goya Foods also returned as a major sponsor, donating
thousands of canned goods and providing discount purchase and free delivery of cans
for three of this year’s teams. In addition to their canned good donation NK Architects and
Solutions Architecture donated $3,000 and
$2,000 respectively to the food bank.
As chairperson for the event I was so inspired by the cause and the commitment of the
teams that it compelled me to sponsor the
award reception as well as donate funds toward the event. I encourage other AIA NS
members to get involved in CANstruction 2014 next year to keep this impressive
program vibrant and moving forward!

Howard Horii, FAIA, will be on hand at 6 p.m. at the General Meeting to be held at the
Wyndham Hamilton Park Hotel and Conference Center in Florham Park on December 12, to sign the newly-released book Truth in the Rivers. The book features watercolors that Horii
has painted over the years. Images include those depicting the internment camp in Arizona where he and his family were relocated
during World War II after being uprooted
from their home in California following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Horii will
be joined at the book signing by his brother-in-law, the book’s author (and
historian) Dr. Bruce Hopkins. Along with telling Howard’s story and the Japanese
American experience during the war, Bruce
also includes essays on civil rights, the need to share with our children the
importance of fairness and justice, as well as an appreciation for nature and the
environment. Howard practiced
architecture with the GRAD firm in Newark for 50 years, taught at Pratt for 44 years,
and is a past president of AIA-NS and The New Jersey State Board of Architects.
