ROSELLE PARK DISTRICTLetter From the President

Dear Residents:Winter isn’t the usual time for new beginnings. Here at the Roselle Park District, we like to shake things up sometimes! While we’re bringing back many favorite activities, we are looking forward to sharing with you many exciting new recreation options.

First we welcome Robert M. Ward as our new Director of Parks and Recreation. Rob comes to the District from the Glencoe Park District where he served as Director of Facilities. With 13+ years in the industry, Rob has extensive experience with successful revenue generating facilities, and a well-rounded background in both the parks maintenance and programming elements of the position. And he’s hit the ground running!

We invite you to join us for an Open House on Thursday, December 9. Here, you’ll be able to meet Rob and chat with our staff and instructors, and learn about the many programs, facilities and classes your park district off ers.

New this winter is our fi rst Ping Pong Tournament, while back by popular demand is our Winter Break Bags Tournament.

Hopefully Mother Nature will smile on us once again and freeze Turner Pond as thoroughly as she did last year to allow for ice skating, as well as ice hockey. We’re also starting a school-aged indoor fl oor hockey league.

Don’t forget to sign up for our Daddy/Daughter Night,“ A Night in Paradise,” coming in February. Mom gets a turn in May with Mom and Son Sports Night, and the whole family can get in the act during our Family Fishing Derby Frenzy this spring.

We love celebrations, and have some new “Preschool Parties” planned. These two hour get-togethers will be held on Saturdays, with themes like “Dino Daze,” “Superheroes to the Rescue,” and “Be My Valentine.”

We’re “rolling back” our spring adult softball fees to get more of you out there and playing, and we’re hoping to entice some other folks to join us for a digital camera class. Further info and program updates can be found on our website, www.roselleparkdistrict.com.

Watch for our *new* website coming soon: www.rparks.org. Wishing you the best of the new season, here in Roselle -- a great place to live, work and play!

Roselle Racers Swim Team (DK)Calling all swimmers…new and returning swimmers are invited to join the Roselle Racers Swim Team for a fun-fi lled summer at Kemmerling Pool! Kemmerling Pool is conve-niently located here in town at Prospect and Bryn Mawr Avenue. Many swimmers may be able to walk or ride their bike to those early morning practices! The Roselle Racers are a member of the DuPage Swim and Dive Conference. This competitive swimming program is designed for swimmers 5-18 years old. Swimmers age 8 and under must be able to swim one length of the pool without stopping; swimmers 9 and over must be able to swim two lengths. Swimmers compete against individuals in their own age group. New team members attend a swimming tryout before they can be on the team. The tryout dates will be an-nounced at registration.Being a member of the swim team requires purchasing a pool pass and attending morn-ing practices regularly. These practices help swimmers develop fundamental swimming skills, including four diff erent competitive swim strokes. Swim meets take place on Wednesday evenings and Saturday morn-ings with a fantastic social network of family volunteers to ensure their success. The swim team is a great way to make friends and get fi t! For more information, visit http://www.roselleracers.org/.

REGISTRATIONIf you cannot make either registration night, you may still join by completing a registration packet at the CRC front desk before May 9th for a special EARLY BIRD RATE! The fi nal registration deadline is May 18th.

Roselle RacersREGISTRATION NIGHTS: April 25 th and 28 th from 6-8 pm.

Volunteer Coaches Needed!Be it our in-house soccer and basketball leagues or Raptors travel basketball teams, volunteer coaches are a valuable ingredient in our youth athletic programs. Without caring moms and dads from the community, giving of their time and eff ort, we would not be able to off er these types of activities. They understand the valuable lessons of participation, teamwork, charac-ter, and sportsmanship. The Roselle Park District feels these long-term principles are paramount and cannot be shoved aside in order to achieve short-term “victo-ries.” If you are a “fi rst timer,” coach’s clinics will be held for those interested in this fun and rewarding opportunity. Please call Vic Orlandino at 630-894-4200 for details.

Teams will be based on approximately 12 to 15 players per roster depending on age groups. Waiting lists will be used until there are enough players and a volunteer head coach to form another team. Games are played on Saturdays against neighboring park districts. Competition will start April 16th. Practices will be held during the week based on coach’s availability. Prac-tices will start two weeks prior to game play dependent upon a particular level having enough volunteer coaches lined-up. Parents will receive a call from their child’s coach once the team selection process is completed. The number of teams competing this spring out of the Roselle Park District is to be submitted

to league offi cials on March 1st for scheduling purposes. Registering before or after this date does not necessarily guarantee a spot on a team due to minimum and maximum num-bers needed to form a team. It is imperative to register early!

Take advantage of our early-bird sign-up fee of $53 by registering before March 7th. All registrations submitted from March 7th on will be charged an additional ten dollars and, again, players cannot be guaranteed a spot on a team.

Volunteer coaches are always needed for this program. Please indicate on registration form if you would be able to manage a team. Also, please let our front desk staff know if you would be interested in coaching. They will

Youth Anti-Bullying and Safety Course (VO)Most youth martial arts programs will teach your child how to defend themselves as they did 1000+ years ago. Times have changed! You don’t give you child an old fashioned type writer when trying to teach them com-puter skills, right? Then why would one want their children to learn out of date self-defense strategies? This class will give them the skills to defend themselves against bullies, help any of their classmates who are getting bul-lied, and focus on non-physical just as much as physical means of defusing an alterca-tion. We’ll also equip your child with tools to heighten their awareness against abductors, and avoid predators. Character lessons such as building self-esteem and respect for others is also an added benefi t.

Shotokan Karate (VO)Through a variety of fun and creative ac-tivities, young children (5+) and adults will develop coordination, strength, and personal safety skills in a well-supervised setting. The self-assurance gained through Shotokan Ka-rate helps foster a strong, positive self-image. The mental aspect involved in karate builds self-confi dence, control, and discipline. The physical aspect of this program is both enjoy-able and benefi cial. Our program will give your child the lead she/he needs in develop-ing memory and agility skills necessary to be successful in school and other sports, while improving overall muscle tone. Karate is ideal for adults as it releases tension and develops cardiovascular fi tness.

All classes are taught by instructors of the Illinois Shotokan Karate Club under the direction of John DiPasquale (6th degree black belt), four time National Champion, former U.S. team member and Karate National Coach and National Faculty Member of ACEP (American Coaching Eff ectiveness Program). W.O.W. Women on Weights (DK)Strength training has been proven to benefi t all populations, from adolescent athletes to seniors. Women, in particular, see tremendous benefi ts from strength training. Traditionally, women relied on cardiovascular activity and a low calorie diet to change their physical appearance. Unfortunately, low calorie diets merely punish the soul and decrease the metabolism. Without including consistent strength training in our program, eff ecting change can be an impossible goal. Strength training is absolutely essential if we wish to create visual changes in our bod-ies, and we’ve discovered that the benefi ts of strength training extend far beyond the visual.

Goose Lake Park Disc Golf Course The concept of the game is easier to under-stand when the term ‘Frisbee® golf’ is used, but since Frisbee is a registered trademark, we call the game disc golf instead. The game is similar to traditional ball golf. Play-ers use special Frisbees (golf discs) instead of balls and clubs, and throw them at an above-ground target instead of a hole in the ground. The object of the game is to throw a golf disc into the target, ‘par’ or better, i.e., in the fewest number of throws. The combi-nation of challenges to players, including distance, accuracy, wind, trees, shrubbery, water and terrain changes, off er plenty of action and excitement during the course of a game. It is possible to submit an early request for any month/year, but these will be fi led and then reviewed/processed on the above stated states. Please contact the Facility Supervisor with any questions about this process.

Program Room and

Area Locations Program locations are subject to change. Roselle Park District staff reserves the right to make changes to room/area locations if deemed necessary for the participation and safety of all our registrants and programs. This type of fl exibility is necessary to ensure that all planned program sessions can meet and activities can go as planned.

Please Be AdvisedNo registrations can be processed after 7:00 p.m. Monday-Friday or after 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. After these times the front desk can accept registration forms but they will not be processed until the next day the front desk is open. Please note: the front desk cannot hold any full or partial CASH payments. NO EXCEPTIONS (CHECK or CREDIT CARD information can be held). Also, there can be no acceptance of any overage payments with transactions. The District can only receive a total payment of what the total corresponding fees necessitate. It is not possible for the District to perform the service of providing cash back or in-system credit on any overwritten personal checks, company checks, government-issue checks, or money orders.

In Case of an Oops!Complete details of program policies, procedures and guidelines are sometimes omitted from the program brochures because of space limitations. Also, errors in days, times, registration requirements and fees may occur as well. We apologize for any errors that may appear in the brochure. We thank you for your patience and understanding when these situations arise.

s Nothing ruins a good program quicker…than everyone waiting until the last minute to register for it. There is a point where if there aren’t enough registrants to hold the program, it is cancelled. Coming in the day of, or the day before the program won’t resurrect it. Please register at least a week early to avoid disappointment.

Registration will continue until

classes are fi lled or cancelled due to low enrollment (at the discretion of the corresponding Recreation Supervisor).

Include Payment & Sign Waiver/ReleasePlease note that you need to include full payment and a signed waiver and release for your form to be processed. Credit card payments require an additional signature to authorize payment. For these reasons, we are unable to accept phone-in registrations.

ResidencyNot all Roselle residents are Roselle Park District residents. Even though you may have a Roselle address, you may pay taxes to another park district. Therefore, proof of residency is required when registering for programs for the fi rst time. This may be done with a driver’s license, utility bill, (or a mortgage statement for those who are recently moving to the area).Roselle Park District residents support the district through property tax contributions and therefore these residents have fi rst priority in the registration process each program period.

Returned Check PolicyWe gladly accept personal checks as payment. If, for any reason, a check is returned to our offi ce marked “NSF,” we will contact you. You will then be required to submit a full cash or money order payment, as well as a $30 bookkeeping fee, within a fi ve business day period. Class privileges will be suspended and new registration will not be accepted until payment is received.

All refund requests must be made at least two business days before the fi rst class meeting or practice of program. Trips and special events require reservations and planning weeks ahead of time and therefore do not allow us to accept refund requests unless there is a wait list and someone can fi ll the spot. Individuals requesting refunds with two or more business days notice, prior to the fi rst class meeting or practice will receive a full refund, less $5 for administrative costs. No refunds will be issued for any program after second meeting of a program, unless a physician’s note is provided. Refund requested for medical reasons will be prorated from the time the request is received.

Non Resident FeesUnless specifi ed by a particular program, the non-resident program fee is an additional $10 or 50% of the regular fee, whichever is less. This does not apply to facility rentals. For all facility rentals, CRC or Turner Park, there is a consistent $25 increase for non-residents in addition to the stated resident fees.

Roselle Park District and the ADAThe Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) prohibits discrimination on the basis of a disability. The Roselle Park District will make reasonable accommodations in recreation programs to enable participation by an individual with a disability that meets essential eligibility requirements for that leisure program and facilities. If you have questions or believe you have been unfairly discriminated against by the park district, please contact the Roselle Park District Director of Parks & Recreation at (630) 894-4200 ext. 228. Those who use the Telecommunications Device for the Deaf may reach the park district by calling (800) 526-0844.

Wait List ProcessA wait list is formed when a class reaches participant levels beyond the maximum. The wait list is designed to maintain interested people in a holding area until more spaces in the program are available, someone drops out or transfers or a new section is added by park district staff based on interest. The wait list is maintained based on the order we process registrations. Customers will be contacted for confi rmation before being added to one of our wait lists (or transferred from a wait list into the desired program) by the front desk or specifi c program supervisor. Please note: before a participant is transferred into a program all corresponding paperwork and payments are required..

What about insurance? The Roselle Park District does not provide medical coverage for injuries suff ered while participating in park district programs, or while using park facilities. The park district, therefore, cannot assume responsibility for personal injury for persons participating in a recreation program or using facilities. Patrons are advised to make provisions for this coverage in their own personal insurance program.
