Bonfire Inflames

Homecoming at RHS has always been more than afootball game and dance; previously a special spirit anda time-honored tradition, this year was no exception.

Hush Day, sponsored by Pepsters this year, initiatedthe annual celebration. October 23 was the designatedday when all the girls took vows not to talk to any boys, the penalty being that girls must give a boy a Hush Daycard, which could be purchased from members of Pep-sters. John Haaf, who received the most cards, wasproclaimed king of Hush Day and crowned Mr. Irresistibleat the uptown rally.

"Bright-flaming heat full fire, the source of motion."These words by Du Bartas best describe the 1963

Roseburg students invade Stewart Park to view the Homecoming bonfirewhich, unquenched by dripping weather, blazes with ominous splendor.

After a long, grueling day at Stewart Park, Dave Riley adds the lastpiece of stolen lumber to another successful Homecoming bonfire.

After being welcomed by Mr. Barneck, Bruce Person and Carmen Kelsosign the traditional alumni list as they enter the Homecoming dance.

Color Day at Roseburg High was declared on Fri-day, October 25. The RHS marching band, attired inbright new orange and black uniforms, proudly headedthe pep rally parade, which serpentined from the schoolto the downtown area and stopped in front of theUmpqua Hotel. Then the rally began with yells anddances by the rally squad. After the dances, CoachThompson introduced the queen and her court and gavea short pep talk.

Friday night, the Indians clashed against the SouthEugene Axemen and emerged victorious. This victoryplaced a warm glow of triumph on the faces of boththe Roseburg students and townspeople. Halftime ac-tivities featured the lovely Homecoming court, which wasescorted to the center of the field and introduced to thecrowd.

Following their victory on the gridiron, the Indiansmoved to the auditorium, where they celebrated at theannual Homecoming dance. Sponsored by Girls' League,"Sugar Shack," the theme for the dance, featured dec-orations of sugar cubes and beatnik figures. The Chancel-lors, a talented combo from Eugene, provided the livemusic. The Chord-dons, the Senior Girls' Trio, vocalistBonnie Brejcha, pianist Peggy Ostrander, and a snappygroup of jazz dancers furnished the entertainment forthe evening.

A Happy Homecoming Highlights October

More than a hundred couples dance to the enjoyable music provided bythe "Chancellors" at the traditional Homecoming dance on October 25.

Barefoot dogpatchers dance the night away to records spun by Dick Booth at the annual Sadie Hawkins day dance, the final celebration of Twirp Week.

Friendly Faces Add Glow to Icy November

Exhausted dancers, Joe Hindman, Gwen Mclaughlin, Dick Gorthy, andMeredeth Cone gaze curiously at some unseen Twirp dance decoration.

This year Twirp season began on November 25 andcontinued throughout the week. Twirp is an abbreviationfor "The Woman is Requested to Pay." During this weekthe girls were required to ask for and finance the dates.Special activities, such as Clash Day when the studentscould wear conflicting colors and patterns, were includedin the weekly schedule.

"Hillbilly Hop," held on Wednesday, November 27,was the theme for the annual Sadie Hawkins day dancesponsored by the Pepsters. More than 75 couples showedup in their most ragged clothes to stomp the night awayon the hay covered floor to the records spun by DickBooth.

Yoshiko Kimura, who prefers to be called "Yo Yo,"•rvas an American exchange student from Hiroshima,Japan. During her year at Roseburg High, Yo Yo stayedat the Ray Doerner residence. The tiny brunette, whospoke English fluently, found that she had some diffi-culty understanding her teachers and classmates. She dis-covered Americans to be "very nice and very friendly,"and it was certain that both the East and West havebenefited by the friendships that their little ambassadorhad established. In order to graduate Yo Yo had to re-turn to Japan and repeat her last year.

Shocked and silent, the student body gathered inthe auditorium, listened to the tragic news of PresidentKennedy's assassination in Dallas, Texas, on November22. Struggling to adjust to the sudden loss, some classeswere conducted only as study hours while others wereused as discussion periods as people tried to under-stand the disaster. The bravery of those closest to thePresident was reflected in the composure of the studentsand faculty. Even as the new President was taking theoath of our country's highest office, the flag was loweredto half mast out of respect for the late President. Thatnight the assassination's effect could clearly be seen onthe gridiron as the players attempted to uphold theirspirit in a game which would have been postponed hadnot the Grant Generals already been on the way at thetime of the assassination. School was closed the follow-ing Monday in accord with President Johnson's declara-tion of a day of national mourning. On Monday after-noon, A Cappella choir provided fitting music for theRoseburg Memorial Service at the fairgrounds.

The pro-gram, presented in a double assem-bly during fifth period, featuredsongs that had been sung at theChristmas concert the night before. At the close of the program, thestudent body joined in a carol sing.

The beginning of the new semes-ter found some RHS students par-ticipating in a protest against theadministration. This minority group, acting on mere rumors that had cir-culated around the school, displayedtheir protests mostly by setting offfire alarms. The unrest on the cam-pus lasted only a few days, afterwhich the students settled down tothe long semester ahead of them.

Bye Bye Birdie, this year's de-lightful operetta, was held in thecommunity building at the DouglasCounty Fairgrounds on March 12-14.

This satire, based upon the rockand roll mania which has beensweeping our country for the past fewyears, was received with mixed emo-tions. The controversial show evenprompted letters to the News Re-view concerning the morality of theplay and its appropriateness for highschool participants. But even thecritics agreed upon the fine qualityof work evident in the properties, make up, lighting, programs, covers, and accompaniment. Members ofthe cast were excellent in'their por-trayals and Mr. Robins was quotedas saying, "This is the best all-around cast I have ever workedwith."

Sweetheart Ball princesses Judy Brittell, Carol Malone, Janice Betcher, Queen Sue Gum, Donna Hill, and Beth Orjala radiate after being crowned.

Hard Work and Fun Utilize Spring Fever

Spirits were high at the annual Sweetheart Ball as a lively crowd enjoyja dance to some peppy music provided by the talented Cobalts.

Over 150 couples attended the annual SweetheartBall held in the auditorium Saturday, April 4, from 8to 12. This semi-formal dance was open to members ofall the classes. Senior Terry Fitzgerald was the chairmanfor the dance, which was sponsored by Key Club as afund-raising project. Table decorations included centerpieces which were red hearts surrounding a single can-dle, table covers with the club insignia in red, and a hugered and white 'heart hung from crepe paper streamers. The Cobalts, a combo from Eugene, provided the musicfor the evening.

Sweetheart princesses, two repressnting each class, were chosen by a vote of the Key Club. The queens se-lection was based on the number of tickets each princesssold. The crowning of Senior Sue Gum as queen tookplace during the dance along with the presentation ofher court.

April 22 was the starting date for the fund-drive,which continued throughout the week. The Sophomorescollected bottles and coat hangers. The Junior projectsincluded window washing, car washes, collecting ragsand scrap iron and house cleaning. Seniors held a spag-hetti dinner which they sold tickets for. Amid flowers, the Prom Court, Demise Doyle, Ron Leep, Gale Short, ParryThomas, Connie Bakke, Tom Dodge, Vince Peetz, Queen Claudia Buchanan,

Bruce O'Neil, Peggy Ostrander, Dick Gwaltney, Diane Yates, Steve Pykand Anitra Kahananui, awaits the queen's dance.

An "Evening in Paris" atmosphere, suggested by street awnings, check-ered tablecloths, and an Arc deTriomphe, depicted the theme of the1964 Junior-Senior Prom. Candle-dripped bottles and miniature flowercarts appropriately decorated the ta-bles. A feeling of Continental en-chantment was created by a ceilingof blue and white crepe paper. JohnJohnson and his junior crew workedarduously to bring about this fes-tive affair. Donning typical butlerand maid uniforms, sophomore wait-ers and waitresses served cookiesand punch to famished couples. Themusic, played by the bearded Check-ers, sparked the enthusiasm of thereceptive crowd. In contrast to lastyear, the girls wore full-length for-mals and danced, somewhat indis-creetly, to the fast beat. The crown-ing of Queen Claudia Buchanan andher six lovely princesses climaxedthe evening's activities.

Busily sketching two interested chaperons, Linda Daly adds realism to the Parisian setting.

Demonstrating the peacock spread, Rally Squad members Cherie Holborow, Lynda Cummins, Margarita Yraguen, Don Ramberg, Steve Pyle, Terry Fitzgerald,Jennifer Babbitt, Leslie Longfellow, and Randi Todd practice one of the many formations developed for use at sporting events and pep assemblies.

Leading the fans at RHS sportsevents was the main purpose of theRally Squad. Headed by peppyQueen Margarita Yraguen, thisgroup consisted of Jennifer Babbitt,Lynda Cummins, Terry Fitzgerald,Cheri Holborow, Leslie Longfellow,Steve Pyle, Don Ramberg, and RandiTodd.

Three nights a week were devotedto diligent practice' of yells anddance routines. In addition to thiswork, two nights a week during theprevious summer had been spent inpractice.

During the 1963 summer, mem-bers of the rally attended a rallycamp to learn new methods of lead-ing an audience. At this camp, theywon a second place trophy for oneof their dance routines.

Attending each home and out-of-town game was .evidence of theschool spirit existing in this group.During their travels to the out-of-town games, they invented variouschants and yells to be used duringgames. They also decorated and tookan important part in the banquetsheld after the football, basketball, and wrestling season.

This year's Ra l l y Squad wasmarked by compatibility among itsmembers and a great deal of ex-uberant enthusiasm. Although muchwork went into each arrangementworked out by this industrious group, all of this was completely out-weighed by the fun and experiencederived from the activity.

Consoling the school mascot, Homer, cheerful Rally Squad members pause after doing a routine.

Rally Squad members proudly exhibit the second-place trophy they won at rally camp last summer.

Sophomores

Having the characteristic of again being the largestclass, the sophomores recorded 514 enrolled in RoseburgHigh. In the area of academics, they were rated thirdas they placed only an average of 9% on the semesterhonor rolls. On February 25 and 26, the Iowa Test ofEducational Development was given to all sophomores. An additional test of the same type, the National Edu-cational Development Test, was available to interestedstudents.

In the inter-class competition, underclassmen took athird in the speech contest. The perky sophomore rallysquad led their class in yell competition, but despite theirsize advantage, only captured 3 points. Under the leader-

ship of Alan Young, class president, and Mr. Burg, thesophomores divided the town into 25 districts and col-lected bottles. During the drive weekend, they netted$117.42 and a third place. Due to the lack of time, theywere unable to organize a talent show.

As a service project, the sophomores decorated forBaccalaureate. They gathered flowers and ferns fromthe surrounding area and trimmed the portable stageappropriately for the occasion. An unusual idea, fitting64's, was created with white snowballs on green back-drops.

Placing14% on the semester honor rolls, the juniors were againrated .second. In the fall, all the juniors were required totake the California Test of Mental Maturity. Later in theyear, 46 members of the class were inducted into Na-tional Honor Society.

By finishing in the speech contest, four juniors added17 points to their interclass rating. Another 4 points werecaptured when the spirited juniors tied for first in yell

competition. Securing $481 and first place in the funddrive, the hard-working juniors undertook scrap metaland rag drives, and car and window washes. Theirtalent show, "Golden Twenties," was a collection of actscomplete with flapper costumes and a jazz band. In thefinal tabulation of points, the junior class ranked secondin the race for the inter-class cup.

Bottle drives, car washes, hot-dog sales, and cakesales financed this year's Prom, sponsored by the juniorclass. An "Evening in Paris" theme was depicted by theartistic efforts of talented juniors.

Two time-consuming scholastic projects for theseseniors were college boards and college visitation trips. They still found time to achieve 20% semester honor rollratings.

By winning the inter-class cup, the seniors provedtheir general superiority. They completely dominated thespeech contest by scoring 27 points as compared to thejuniors' 17 and the sophomores' 1. Continuing to secure

inter-class points, the seniors tied for first in yell com-petition. For an evening of hard work at the senior-sponsored spaghetti dinner, they received a "second"and 3 more points toward the trophy. "This Was theWeek That Was" or "TW3," the senior talent show, gavean hysterical account of school activities.

Before the parting of ways, the graduates spent onelast gala evening together at the traditional Senior Ban-quet. The religious aspect of graduation was recognizedat Baccalaureate. Twelve long years of diligent studywere climaxed at Commencement on May 25.

Well-known to students at Roseburg High School wasDon Jones of Bruno's Photography, Portland, Oregon. The promptness, friendliness, and quality which wascharacteristic of all his work, made getting your picturetaken a real pleasure.

Very seldom did a student find that he had to waitfor his picture to be delivered. Soon after a session inthe Bruno trailer, the seniors found their proofs in theirhands.

Friendliness was another element which contributedto the happy atmosphere surrounding the usual tiresometask of getting your pictures.

Most important, however, was the pleasure one de-rived from the quality pictures. Clear and true-to-life,they pleased all our students.

New this year to most of us, was the use of a mobiletrailer for a photography studio. Waiting and dressingrooms, plus a picture-taking area, were all combinedinto this expedient unit. At the end of this year, Brunopurchased a brand new trailer featuring wall-to-wallcarpeting, built-in stereo and air conditioner, spiral stair-case and elevated waiting room, suspended and indirectlighting, a built-in electrical unit, fully equipped photoparlor, and even hot and cold running water. This traileris most convenient for traveling between cities.

Besides pictures of the seniors, Bruno's made manyspecial trips to Roseburg to photograph the Key Club'sSweetheart Ball, the Junior-Senior Prom, the annualHomecoming which included the downtown rally, thefootball game, and the bonfire, and finally the long-awaited graduation. It was the special effort which Mr.Jones expended on such special occasions that made ita real pleasure to do work with this man.

It was necessary to have full cooperation of the stu-dents, the yearbook staff, and the photographer, but sooften it is found that not all of these elements functionproperly. Here all three worked industriously for a com-mon goal—another All-American yearbook.

Producing the 1964 Umpqua has been thebiggest job ever undertaken by the members ofthe staff. Through all the petty troubles and fewmajor problems, we have striven to produce aunique book for the enjoyment of its readers.Although our labors have put together most ofthe book, there are those who have helped in bigand small ways. We give our greatest apprecia-tion to the personnel of Bruno Studio who tookmany pictures, developed our negatives, andenlarged many shots. Also to Taylor PublishingCompany and its representative Mr. Andy Guffinwe extend our thanks. For the Girl of Jhe Monthpictures we thank Clark's- Studio and Girls'League. The aid given to us by The News Re-view was appreciated. Finally, we thank JoelNorman for the design of the school seal, andwe thank Jim Orjala for the reproduct ionsthroughout the book. Special recognition mustbe bestowed upon our adviser Mr. Bodeen whopatiently stood by our dawdling and gave usmany hours of his time. Thank you—
