January/ February/March Birthdays

We are gearing up for our next RIF distribution at the six RIF schools. We anticipate hearing from the Macy’s Thanks for Share promotion and Donna and Ann plan to place an order for additional books. Marsha and Stephenie visited Macy’s and introduced themselves to the new manager, Anne Sierra, and set up a thank you poster and treats for the Macy’s associates. We also want to thank Cindy Cardinale for making additional bird houses that will be given to the RIF school’s libraries. They will be used for announcing the upcoming RIF days for the students and staff.

New Teacher Recruitment Grants It is that time again to nominate a prospective teacher you would like to see awarded with one of our local DKG Recruitment Grants. This grant targets worthy students who are currently enrolled in a teacher education program, such as student teachers, intern teachers, or full-time teachers who are seeking a supplemental credential to qualify for a position in which they are currently teaching. These grants are not intended for teachers who are in a full-time teaching position, unless they fulfill the requirements mentioned above.

The final due date for the grant applicants to turn in their application is Thursday, March 9 by 5:00pm. Candidates will be chosen by the Grants and Awards Committee and invited to attend our April 8 meeting where they will be presented their award.

If you would like to nominate a candidate or have questions, please contact Marilynn Whitcomb at [email protected] or call (831) 375-0731, and she will provide the necessary information for the application process.

Dear Delta Lambda Sisters,

Below you will find the qualifications for a member who you believe will participate actively and make positive contributions to our organization in leadership roles. There is no requirement for number of years of service as a professional educator in advance of the invitation to join, or a limit on the number of years an educator can be retired prior to nomination.

January 2017 Delta Lambda Chapter 60th Birthday Mary Marchi and Dorothy Becker

What Delta Lambda/Delta Kappa Gamma Has Meant to Me

Mary: 50 years in Delta Kappa Gamma for each of us. 50 years of some unbelievable experiences in the Society. Put us together and we can represent 100 years of unbelievable experiences--too many to name.

Dorothy: And now, because everyone knows of our 50 years, well,, 49 and ½, in the Society, I guess I have to stop pretending I’m still 39 years old?

Mary: Dorothy and I have been asked to share with you some of the experiences and some of the things we gained from our years in DKG. So we are going to take turns and share a few things and then since this is a birthday celebration, we are going to share our DKG birthday wishes for you.

At the Society’s outset, on May 11, 1929, our 12 founders took the pledge to do 3 things

1. To improve themselves 2. To advance the best interests of the profession, and 3. To elevate the status of women in education….which in those days was not very high.

I am not sure we were as ambitious as these 12 ladies when we joined….they had a lot more work to do when they joined, than we did….but for sure I know we were honored to join the Society in the footsteps of these women to improve ourselves, to advance the education profession and to continue to elevate the status of women in education.

Dorothy: One of the greatest things we gained from DKG was our coming together and the friendship and professional camaraderie that grew from it. Without DKG Mary and I may never have known each other because we came together from different parts of the world.

We were both initiated into DKG in May 1967. I was initiated into Delta Lambda Chapter here on the Monterey Peninsula…

Mary: … and I was initiated into Beta Rho Chapter in the San Francisco Bay Area.

While Dorothy was down here becoming a good member, I was up in the Bay Area trying to do the same thing. We were working on committees and began our journey into leadership as we took chapter offices. After a few years I found myself Chapter President. However, when I finished my biennium as chapter president of Beta Rho…I left the country.

I left (with my family) to live in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. My chapter wished us well and said, “Be sure to keep in touch”-- which I did over the years I was living in an oil company compound in the middle of a desert. I wrote home to my chapter and was told that whenever my letters arrived, they became the program for their meetings.

When we returned home we relocated in Carmel Valley and my Beta Rho chapter knew I would be transferring. I contacted International Headquarters and learned that there were two chapters in the Monterey area—Alpha Lambda and Delta Lambda. I knew no one and nothing about either chapter. But I did find out from International Headquarters that the Delta Lambda Chapter had a president who lived in

Page 8: deltalambdachapter.weebly.com Rose Report · testimonial that Girls’ Inc. has given her the tools for success. Guests also enjoyed a delicious lunch, as well as had fun bidding

Carmel Valley and her name was Dorothy Becker. I contacted Dorothy, she invited me to a meeting, and our DKG friendship and journey together began.

Dorothy: After my chapter presidency, I went on to work at the State level as Area V Director. Then on to some State committees and even had the privilege of working with Mary when she was State President. I also treasure being involved in the start-up of the LIFE Foundation.

Mary: While Dorothy was working on the State level, I became chapter president for Delta Lambda and after a few years, Dorothy thought I should be an Area Director, too—she put my name forward and there I found myself starting my journey on the State and International levels.

Throughout our journey together, we gained so much. We both feel that we can never give back to Delta Kappa Gamma for all it has given us.

Dorothy: We have had all kinds of experiences in our 50 years. They encompassed busy times. hard working times, frustrating times, prideful times, terrifying times, and many, many fun and happy times. Through the encouragement and role modeling of those who served before us, we learned a lot.

Mary: We learned the leadership skills of—how to listen; how to delegate; how to deal with difficult situations and people; how to empower and let others take the lead.

We gained personal professional confidence—how to walk into a room, not knowing anyone, and introduce ourselves; how to plan meetings and conferences, how to make professional growth presentations at workshops and conferences; how to conduct meetings before groups of 30 or 500 or 1800 ladies on all levels of the Society.

Dorothy: We shared our pride in being a part of a wonderful profession---how to dress professionally. We wore our DKG pins and jewelry proudly. We wanted people to see us as professional women educators.

We met fantastic women from all over the United States and the world. We have made some life-long friends. We have had the opportunity to travel and attended state and International meetings. One year (2009) we decided we would like to attend a conference in the European Region. So we registered and were invited to attend the Great Britain State Conference. We had a wonderful week in London.

Mary: What is really most important to us in sharing our DKG journey with you, is that these experiences and opportunities (no matter how large or small) are available to each and every one of you as members. You get these experiences by making yourself a visible and working part of your chapter in the Society. Working on a committee, working on a project, taking a position as an officer, or just volunteering to do something you might not otherwise try.

We encourage you to take that first step and follow in the footsteps of others who have led you.

We wish you many wonderful years of Delta Kappa Gamma experiences….and today is a day for celebrating!

Dorothy: Today is a day for celebrating 60 years. Celebrations are a time when we take a few moments to look back and reflect on where we have been, a time to think about where we are today how far we have come and to think about the future and where we are going. We sometimes are startled by the numbers of years that have crept up on us. Sometimes we would rather not think about them, but there certainly is nothing stopping us from enjoying the celebrations and fellowship as we commemorate special events.

Page 9: deltalambdachapter.weebly.com Rose Report · testimonial that Girls’ Inc. has given her the tools for success. Guests also enjoyed a delicious lunch, as well as had fun bidding

Mary: Wishes are made on birthday anniversaries--whether it is in blowing out candles, or in cutting the first slice of a cake. These are our 6 wishes (one for every decade of Delta Lambda) for you and our chapter.

Dorothy: Our first wish for our chapter is Service.

May effective service through committee and leadership roles at our chapter level be expanded in order to promote improved education for all children.

Mary: Our second wish for you is Fellowship.

May you continue to know and accept each other as human beings, working toward the ultimate brotherhood of man.

Dorothy: Our third wish for you is Understanding

May each member understand that our lives function around many differences, understand the changes going on in the world, and understand the importance of key women in the preparation of tomorrow's educators and leaders.

Mary: Our fourth wish for you is Happiness.

May each member know the satisfaction of putting others first as she guides them toward their goals. May you feel the inner glow that comes through knowing that the world is a better place in which to live because of our lives.

Dorothy: Our fifth wish is Prosperity and Health.

May our chapter flourish and may you as key women educators help eliminate poverty of the mind, as well as of the being. We wish for each member--good health--a sound mind in a sound body as you seek to improve the quality of daily living.

Mary: Our sixth wish for you is Peace.

May we wish inner peace for each of us, peace for our nation and peace in the world.

Dorothy: May these wishes not only create memories for each of you, but also continue your joyous journey in Delta Lambda and Delta Kappa Gamma.

Mary and Dorothy: Happy, Happy Birthday Delta Lambda!
