11 May 2019—The Zonta Club of Central Oklahoma was proud to support the Central Oklaho-

ma Habitat for Humanity Women’s Build again in 2019. The future homeowner, a single mom

of one, currently resides in a high crime area and is excited to live in a nice home in a neighbor-

hood where they can feel safe. Habitat for Humanity has been hosting Women Build events

across the U.S. since 1991.

“HIGH FASHION” AT THE

Painting is messy

business! Tammy

worker dripped paint

on her face. Sorry,

Tammy!

All that hard work made us hungry!

Past Zonta International Director Judy Kautz shared her impressions of the Life Skills Programme after talking with the peer educators and the participants. "We met some amazing young women and this concept really does seem to be making a difference. They seem to really like these clas-ses, and they spoke to us comfortably about their experienc-es with early marriage, early pregnancy, abortion and vio-lence against women. We also got to speak to mothers of the participants about their feelings about these classes. Those we spoke to were positive, stating they learned from the students, and their other children did too. They were glad that topics like early marriage and pregnancy were be-ing discussed, as they were uncomfortable discussing these issues with their children themselves."

Sexual violence, rape, child prostitution and child marriage are all problems in Madagascar, as the Zonta team learned through

their observation of a child protection club in Fort Dauphin and visit to a child protection one-stop center in the capital of Mada-

gascar. (Pictured above Judy Kautz (2nd Row on left)

A Message from Governor Sheryl Flanagin

Honoring the Past and Empowering the Future Dear D10 Zontians, May is always a special time of year—a time to celebrate the successes of the past and to look forward to the opportunities of the future! As we close out this year and get ready to embark on another year of Zonta service and advocacy, I want to share with you some good D10 news. We have awarded three of our scholarships: YWPA: Awarded to Rose Nguyen. Rose was submitted by Zonta Club of Central Oklaho-ma. Rose is planning to major in sociology and global affairs. She hopes to someday to work for a non-governmental organization focused on international development or to be-come a child’s rights attorney. Rose Award: Awarded to Amanda Hill. Amanda was submitted by Zonta Club of Greater East Texas. Amanda is a single mother of three children pursuing a bachelor’s degree in nursing at Kilgore College with a 4.0 GPA. Sara Metcalf Award: Awarded to Abigail Roberts. Abigail was submitted by Zonta Club of Shreveport. Abigail plans to obtain a Bachelor of Science in biology from Ouachita Baptist University. All three of these recipients are outstanding. I am so pleased that through our Dollars for Scholarship D10 can fund such awards. Thank you to all who contribute. Also, many thanks to our scholarship chairs: Lileen Coulloudon, Zonta Club of Dallas, YWPA; Sharon Illhardt, Zonta Club of Seguin, Rose; Angela Henderson, Zonta Club of Shreveport, Sara Metcalf Award. As a reminder, we have three scholarship/awards to give with a July 1 deadline for submis-sion: Zonta D10 STEM, Jane M. Klausman Women in Business, and Women in Technology. What an honor to serve as governor of District 10! I have enjoyed this past year working with you to ensure that D10 continues as a strong district in its support of service and ad-vocacy toward empowering women and girls. Also, so important is the support we give each other. Thank you all for being the Zontians you are! My best wishes to you for another productive, fun Zonta year! I hope to see many of you in Lafayette October 17-20 for our 70th D10 Conference. You may expect, “Laissez les bon temps rouler!” Sheryl Flanagin Zonta D10 Governor
