Rose is called as the Queen of flowers as well as King of
flowers. Rose is a very important flower crop cultivated in the
country.
Rose is propagated by different methods like cutting, shield
budding, grafting etc.
The rootstock like Rosa indica, Rosa multiflora, and Edward
rose are commonly used for rose propagation.
Introduction
Propagation Method: Cutting
This Cutting method of propagation is used for propagation of
rose rootstocks, miniature roses, shrub roses, climbing roses
and ramblers.
Newly matured stem are selected for such type of propagation.
The stem is cut in such a way that each cuttings has 4-5 buds.
Root promoting hormones like IAA, IBA are used for rooting the
cuttings. Rooting period varies with type of cuttings, growing
media, season of cutting and growth regulators treatment.
• Shield or T-Budding is most commonly used method of rose
propagation. T shaped incision is made on the selected
rootstock. Bud is inserted into the incision and then firmly tied
with a plastic film. Budding should be preferably done on lowest
part of the rootstock.
• Union requires as long as 3-4 weeks after which the side
branches of rootstock are removed.
• When new shoot from the grafted bud is growing about 10 cm
long, the portion of rootstock above union is cut off and
polythene tape around the union is removed.

Layering:
This propagation method is limited to Climbing and Rambling
roses. They can be propagated either by Ground Layering or Air
layering.

Rootstocks
Rootstocks:Commonly used rootstocks in rose are: Rosa
borboniana, Rosa multiflora, Rosa indica.
1.Rosa bourboniana (Edward Rose): It is most popular rootstock
used extensively in India for budding standard roses.
2. Rosa indica (var. odorata): It is a large climbing shrub used for
greenhouse roses which is easily propagated from cuttings. It is
well adapted to dry or wet soil conditions, can withstand high soil
pH and is resistant to powdery mildew and many insect pests. In
India, it has been recommended for Northern plains.

3. Rosa multiflora: It is a native
of China and Japan and
introduced in India in 1872. It
is widely used root stock for
outdoor roses which can be
easily propagated by cuttings.
It is adaptable to wide range of
soil and climatic conditions. It
recommended for Bihar,
Bengal and hilly areas.
