The Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary
1. The Annunciation
God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a maiden pledged to be
married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. Her name was Mary. The angel
went to her and said, Hail, Mary, full of grace! The Lord is with you. Mary was greatlytroubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel
said to her, Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive
and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be calledthe Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and
he will reign over Jacobs descendants forever; his kingdom will never end. How will
this be, Mary asked the angel, since I am not married yet? The angel answered, TheHoly Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So
the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. Even Elizabeth, your cousin, is
going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in
her sixth month. For with God all things are possible. I am the handmaiden of the Lordservant, Mary answered. Let all come to pass according to your word. Then the angel
left her.

2. The Visitation of Mary to Elizabeth
At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of
Judea, where she entered Zechariahs home and greeted Elizabeth. When
Elizabeth heard Marys greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, andElizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. In a loud voice she exclaimed:
Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! But
why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? As
soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb
leaped for joy. Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill
his promises to her!

3. The Nativity of the Lord
And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks
at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone aroundthem, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, Do not be afraid. I bring you
good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a
Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: Youwill find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger. Suddenly a great company of
the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, Glory to God in the
highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests. When the angelshad left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, Lets go to
Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about. Sothey hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger.
When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them aboutthis child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But
Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds
returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, whichwere just as they had been told.

4. The Presentation of the Lord in the Temple
Joseph and Mary took Jesus to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord (as it is
written in the Law of the Lord, Every firstborn male is to be consecrated to
the Lord), and to offer a sacrifice in keeping with what is said in the Law of
the Lord: a pair of doves or two young pigeons. Now there was a holy
man in Jerusalem called Simeon, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. It hadbeen revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had
seen the Lords Messiah. Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple
courts. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the
custom of the Law required, Simeon took him in his arms and praised God,
saying:
Sovereign Lord, as you have promised,
you may now dismiss your servant in peace.
For my eyes have seen your salvation,
which you have prepared in the sight of all nations:a light for revelation to the Gentiles,
and the glory of your people Israel.
The childs father and mother marveled at what was said about him. Then
Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother: This child is destined to
cause the falling and rising of many in Israel.

5. The Finding of Jesus in the Temple
Every year Jesus parents went to Jerusalem for the Festival of the Passover. When he was twelve years old, they went up to the festival, according to the
custom. After the festival was over, while his parents were returning home,
the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but they were unaware of it.
Thinking he was in their company, they traveled on for a day. Then they
began looking for him among their relatives and friends. When they did not
find him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him. After three days they
found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them
and asking them questions. Everyone who heard him was amazed at his
understanding and his answers. When his parents saw him, they wereastonished. His mother said to him, Son, why have you treated us like this?
Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you. Why were you
searching for me? he asked. Didnt you know I had to be in my Fathers
house? But he went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them.

The Sorrowful Mysteries of the RosaryFrom that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to
Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests and
teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised
to life (Matthew 16:21).
1. Jesus Agony in the Garden
Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed
him. On reaching the place, he said to them, Pray that you will not fall into
temptation. He withdrew about a stones throw beyond them, knelt down
and prayed, Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my
will, but yours be done. An angel from heaven appeared to him and
strengthened him. And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his
sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.
