• One in ten people live without access to safe water – around 783 million people.

• 2,000 children die every day from water-related diseases.

• On average, people in developing countries use just 10 litres of water a day – Americans use 400 litres of water a day.

• 2.5 billion people worldwide live without a toilet.

• Poor sanitation deprives women of privacy and exposes them to the risk of attack.

• Diarrhoea kills more children every year than AIDS, malaria and measles combined – it’s the second biggest killer of children under five worldwide.

• Hand-washing with soap can reduce the incidence of diarrhoea by up to 47%.

• Water, sanitation and hygiene combined can reduce deaths from diarrhoeal diseases by an average of 65%.

• One gram of human faeces can contain 10,000,000 viruses, 1,000,000 bacteria, 1,000 parasite cysts, 100 parasite eggs.
