AS Media Studies
Main Elements of CD cover
representation
As you can see, none of my chosen CD covers have the band revealing themselves.
Each of these CD covers differs from one another in a variety of ways, therefore having the ability to attract a particular target audience.
This presentation will show just what these covers represent about their parent bands, and their audience potential.
Crimson – Alkaline trio
Alkaline Trio play a somewhat darker and more textured--though typically fast and furious--brand of punk that gives sonic representation to the anger and desperation that fuels the group's music.
Years of relentless touring and recording, plus keen commercial acumen, have put Alkaline Trio near the top of the contemporary
punk-rock heap.
Muse – Absolution
Muse – Origin of Symmetry
These CD covers are for two different albums representing the band Muse and their style of
music. From these covers, it is easy to see that their particular brand of music is perhaps a style
considered un-ordinary or bizarre but interesting since the Absolution cover is perhaps suggesting
that since people are floating in the sky, anything is possible.
Muse’s brand of music can easily be described as weird yet wonderful.
Hard-Fi – Stars of CCTV
Although this album cover is fairly simple, it still conveys a message regarding the band. The
name of the album and the image of the camera clearly suggests that the band are so popular or well-known to the public, and perhaps even the world, that they are being watched all day every day by everyone. A simple cover, displaying a
powerful message.
Green Day – American Idiot
Green day are already a well-known rock band, this particular album cover is very
sharp in conveying this message about their style of music.
The heart-shaped hand grenade is very effective in conveying a message of
perhaps blowing emotions apart with their music, allowing their audience to really experience what the band are singing
about.
Faithless – Reverence
This cover features the lead singer of the band Faithless covering his face. The title perhaps represents that the band show utmost respect for their audience, hence
the title reverence. Since Reverence evokes an emotion in people, this cover perhaps conveys the message that their music will be about particular people and
how they feel.
A-Ha – Minor Earth Major Sky
This album cover again represents and out of the ordinary scenario regarding the
bands music.
The front part of a plane and the title of the album suggest that the Earth is not even
close to experiencing the full potential of the band’s style of music compared to the skies
of the Earth.
