Adam MorrisVP of Business Development

We are very pleased to announce that Adam Morris has joined Evergreen Rehabilitation as Vice President of Business Development. Adam comes to Evergreen Rehabilitation with extensive national healthcare sales and marketing experience. Prior to joining Evergreen Rehabilitation, Adam was with First Quality Healthcare where he was responsible for the management and growth of national accounts.

Prior to First Quality, Adam was Vice President of Sales USA for Aeda Healthcare Ltd., a SHL business unit (Scandinavian Health Limited).

In his role as the Vice President of Business Development, Adam will lead sales and marketing efforts throughout the country and look to expand on Evergreen Rehabilitation’s national presence as a leading provider of rehabilitation therapy services and outpatient therapy management.

Inspiration from Our Friends at Maverick Multisport

As a contract therapy provider, one of Evergreen Rehabilitation’s primary goals is to give our patients access to the best quality care so that we can maximally improve their quality of life. The primary way that we do this is through skilled therapeutic interventions (physical, occupational and speech therapy) delivered by PTs, OTs, and SLPs, however, patient education is also a key aspect in what we do. It’s no secret that one of the best forms of preventative healthcare is living a healthy life by making good nutritional choices, not smoking, and engaging in regular exercise. Sounds simple, right? Maybe on paper, but it certainly isn’t as easy once you try to put it into practice.

One thing that can make the pursuit of healthy living easier is to surround yourself with positive people who share your goals. You can join a gym, get involved with a recreational sports league, or just find people on-line or in real life who motivate you. The key is to stay active, but sometimes what we really need is inspiration, a push in the right direction. Sometimes success stories can light a spark within us that force us to step out of our shells and push ourselves farther than we ever thought possible.

To that end, we’d like to share with you today some of the success stories from Maverick Multisport, a team of triathletes based out of Louisville, KY. Maverick Multisport provides an avenue for athletes of all ages and fitness levels to get involved in recreational and competitive marathons (including running, swimming, and cycling). They provide programs for Elite Teams and Junior/Youth teams alike. The Elite Team competes in Iron Man competitions and triathlons all across the country as well as providing mentorship and coaching for the Junior/Youth teams.

Though the Elite Team at Maverick Multisport is always busy, several of their team members have had great success in the last month, including several top 10 finishes:

Amber Ferreira – 6th Pro female at Ironman 70.3 Eagleman Matt Hanson – 6th Pro male at Ironman 70.3 Kansas Mike Hermanson – 10th Pro male at Ironman 70.3 Syracuse Clay Emge – won the Texas State Team Time Trial along with his 3 teammates

Evergreen Rehabilitation’s co-founder and Executive Vice President, Doug Hall, is very closely involved with the Maverick Multisport group, both as a team member and a fitness advocate. Doug is a competitive tri-athlete himself, and has had great success competing in several triathlons and Iron Man competitions. Along with the Maverick Multisport team, Doug strives to be a great example of the benefits of healthy living and what can be achieved through hard work and dedication.


A Day in the Life of a Rehab Therapy ProfessionalHas anyone ever asked you, “What is it that you do at Evergreen Rehabilitation?” In order to understand the role that Evergreen Rehab plays in the healthcare industry as a contract therapy provider, one must first understand what therapists do in providing care to residents. Many people know what therapists do but they aren’t always sure how they do it.

Often times, patients will experience a loss of functional independence and mobility. Therapists must identify which treatment would be best suited so as to maintain and, if possible, return to their prior level of function. The end goal, or desired outcome, is to have the patients’ individual independence restored in as many aspects of life as possible including, but not limited to, activities of daily living (being able to dress, bathe, care for

oneself) and mobility (ability to walk, move from a sitting to standing position, use of a cane or walker).

There are three unique disciplines in the world of rehabilitation therapy: physical, occupational and speech. Since rehabilitation therapy is an interdisciplinary job that requires the collaboration of many different professionals, there are also therapy assistants for both physical therapists (physical therapist assistants, or PTAs) and occupational therapists (occupational therapy assistants, or COTAs). Evergreen employs PTs, OTs, SLPs, PTAs, COTAs, and Rehab Techs. Now that we know what kind of professionals make up a rehab department, let’s break it down a little. Therapists help patients overcome obstacles!

Physical therapists (PTs) are instrumental in developing a plan that helps patients regain strength, promote the ability to move through flexibility and range of motion exercises, reduce pain, and restore function all while working to prevent disability. PTs work with individuals to prevent the loss of mobility before it occurs by promoting movement and healthier lifestyles. They are instrumental in helping patients recover from many types of injuries or surgeries.

Occupational therapists (OTs) assist residents in regaining the skills for self-feeding, grooming, bathing, toileting, and dressing. Adaptive equipment is provided to residents who are unable to complete these tasks on their own. Occupational therapy also focuses on providing assistance for those individuals who display decreased safety, strength, fine motor skills, activity tolerance, balance, and/or cognition. OTs evaluate patients to find areas that need more range of motion or strength, and can assist with functional postures and body mechanics. Whether re-learning how to cook or tie a shoelace, achieving better coordination means OTs work to get patients functioning again.

Speech language pathologists (SLPs) work with patients who have a disorder relevant to speech, language, cognition or swallowing. Many skilled nursing facility (SNF) residents have swallowing, cognition or speech issues that arise from illness. SLPs work one-on-one with each patient to see that strides are made in improving patient outcomes for speech and language.

It is impossible to keep a rehab department running optimally without the hard work and daily dedication of each member of the interdisciplinary team.

Evergreen Four Star Award Winner, Lynn Berry PTA

Congratulations to our latest Four Star Award winner!

Evergreen Rehab Physical Therapist Assistant Lynn Berry is the latest recipient of Evergreen’s Four Star Award. Every other month, Evergreen Rehab presents the Four Star Award to an outstanding employee whose leadership and stewardship go above and beyond the call of duty. Each Four Star Award winner receives a company-paid vacation for two to a luxury resort in Hilton Head, South Carolina. Lynn works at Belle Meade in Greenville, KY and was nominated by her rehab director, Doressa Markwell. In her nomination submission, Doressa sung Lynn’s praises and had this to say:

“Lynn is the definition of a GREAT therapist. She goes out of her way to care for her patients. She is always willing to lend a helping hand when asked and she never, NEVER, complains about her job. She always has a smile on her face no matter the situation. She is truly the backbone of our therapy department. She is dependable, trustworthy, and a “team player.” No matter if she has a 2 hour day or a 10 hour day, she will always get the job done. There are not enough lines [on the nomination form] to explain how much she deserves this award!”

And now some words from the FSA winner herself, here are Lynn’s thoughts on working with the seniors at Belle Meade: “I have worked for Evergreen Rehab for 6 years. Belle Meade is a special place to work because of the great staff and working environment. Belle Meade is owned and operated by Greg and Ann Sparks who are exceptional people to work with. They treat their employees and residents like family. They provide a compassionate and caring place to work and live. Over the past 13 years, I’ve had the pleasure to be involved in improving the lives of senior citizens who have in turn enriched my life through advice, laughter and shared stories of their experiences and trials that remind me daily to count my blessings and appreciate my life and family. One of the things that I love most about my job is seeing the residents I’ve worked with return home after a successful progression through physical therapy. It is very rewarding to help them achieve their goals, improve their quality of life and resume their previous functional activities as best as they can.

My hometown is Madisonville where I still currently live. I lived a few years in Lexington, KY where I worked as a receptionist in a Sports Medicine/Physical Therapy clinic. It was there that I was inspired to pursue a career in physical therapy after watching the therapists there provide great care to their patients. I graduated from Madisonville Community College, and worked four years in home health before starting in long term care (LTC) facilities. My favorite hobby is kayaking. I recently vacationed in Washington, D.C. where we had a great time and really enjoyed kayaking in the Potomac River. Thanks again for this acknowledgment of a job well done. It is very nice to feel appreciated!”

5 Best Practices for Social Media in the Workplace

As the summer winds down, it seems like a good time to revisit some tips and tricks for dealing with social media in the workplace. Social media refers to on-line communities such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and LinkedIn. While some of these tips might seem basic, as a clinical professional it’s always good to keep a few key things in mind when posting to your work or personal social media accounts.

1. People are going to see your posts – possibly a lot more people than you ever expected. Even if you think you have your security settings locked down, and that no one except your close friends will ever see your posts, that’s not always the case. Facebook and Twitter are constantly changing the look, feel and responsiveness of their newsfeeds. A careless comment or rant might end up on the front page of another website, and once it’s out there you have no control over that content. https://www.facebook.com/help/420576494648116/

2. Facebook uses facial recognition technology. It’s now possible to be tagged in a picture without anyone actually tagging you. Someone might take a picture of you, post it to their Facebook page and all of a sudden you are tagged in pictures and not even know it. 3. Comments, pictures, status updates, emails, text messages – none of these things every truly go away online. It’s very, very difficult to actually remove anything from the Internet. 4. People can share your posts, tweets and images far and wide. Once it’s out in the wild, you have little to no control over it. One of the primary purposes of the Internet and social media at large is to share – share stories, be engaged, and find great content. What’s not great is when you post something you wish you had not, and another person shares it, and then another person, and so on and so forth. 5. Let cooler heads prevail.
