Dear Friends of Marywood,

Thank you for being supporters of Marywood, recognizing the awesomegift we have here in the Northwoods. The beauty of God speaks to usthrough nature and our guests in every season! Wisdom born of experi-ence and learning from one another are fruits of various discussiongroups that develop within our programming. One-to-one conversationsoften leave something to think about long after the encounter.

What an adventure people of faith around the world are experiencingwith Pope Francis and his call to living the ”good life of the gospel”every day of our lives. The Year of Mercy, heard by all, adds to our ownjoy at experiencing mercy and forgiveness and sets forth the challengeto do likewise. This new year, 2016, provides opportunity for each of us– may we be drawn to soul searching within and reaching out to others.

May the holidays commemorated January thru April – especially Easter, celebrating resurrection and new life – be blessed with all you wouldwant them to be.

Peace,

Sister Elizabeth Amman

A Prayer for Our EarthAll powerful God, you are present in the whole universeand in the smallest of your creatures. You embrace with your tenderness all that exists.Pour out upon us the power of your love, that we may protect life and beauty. Fill us with peace, that we may liveas brothers and sisters, harming no one.O God of the poor, help us to rescue the abandoned and forgotten of this earth, so precious in your eyes.Bring healing to our lives, that we may protect the world and not prey on it,that we may sow beauty, not pollution and destruction.Touch the hearts of those who look only for gainat the expense of the poor and the earth.Teach us to discover the worth of each thing,to be filled with awe and contemplation,to recognize that we are profoundly unitedwith every creatureas we journey towards your infinite light. We thank you for being with us each day.Encourage us, we pray, in our strugglefor justice, love and peace.

Without winter, there can be no spring.Without mistakes, there can be no learning.

Without doubts, there can be no faith. Without fears, there can be no courage.

My mistakes, my fears and my doubts are my path to wisdom.

Companion on the Journey: Resurgence of Spiritual Direction

Today, we are exhaustively self-aware. Fostering an interior life is no longer reserved for a fewmonastics. A reflective life is cultivated in the arts, in sports, and in social activities of manykinds. Works on the “spirituality”-of-just-about-everything line our bookshelves. Yet, people feel empty.

People who feel fragmented are seeking authenticity. People who are making major decisions are looking for discernment. People who are experiencing the presence of God in a new way arelooking for validation. People who are exhausted in their ministry are looking for relief. Peoplewho feel distant from God are seeking intimacy. Those concerned about the poor and marginal-ized are looking for solidarity. People from many walks of life are looking for spiritual guidancefrom someone who is steeped in Scripture, and who has both feet planted firmly on the ground. There is a renewed interest in spiritual direction.

The spiritual director is not a counselor, but one who simply helps a person become more awareof the presence of God in the normal circumstances and relationships. The conversation with a person in spiritual direction is casual, but through the assistance of the director/guide’s com-ments, and perhaps questions, a person’s awareness of the Holy in everyday life is enhanced.

Spiritual Direction has had a long and respected tradition in the history of Christianity. Peoplesought out the desert mothers and fathers to become more aware of the real presence of God. So it is today, as a contemporary spiritual director points to the activity of the Holy in a person’srelationships and ordinary experiences of life.Marywood Franciscan Spirituality Center is a place where people of all walks of life can seek

spiritual direction in confidence. Trained and experienced spiritual directors/guides of varied backgrounds are available to all.
