Receptacle WiringReceptacle wiring must be of adequate size for unit. Referto unit identification plate for exact power requirements.Minimum size of wiring, based on power requirements, is:Units up to 20 amps: 12 gauge20–30 amp units: 10 gauge

Use copper wire only. Consumer’s responsibility is to provideproper and adequate receptacle wiring that conforms to allapplicable codes. All wiring should be installed by qualifiedelectrician.

LCDI or AFCI Power CordsUnderwriters Laboratories (UL) and the National ElectricCode (NEC) now require power cords that sense currentleakage and can open the electrical circuit to the unit. In theevent, the unit does not operate, check the reset buttonlocated on or near the head of the power cord as part of thenormal troubleshooting procedure.

InstallationComplete step-by-step installation instructions are furnishedwith your unit. These instructions will be found on a separatepage included with this manual or in the mounting kitassembly. Follow these instructions carefully. Keep theseinstructions with this manual for future reference. Your unitwill be one of the following designs:

• Unit with a window mounting kitThese models are designed for mounting though anopening in a wall. These units can be adapted towindow installation by using the optional window mount-ing kit supplied with your unit.

• Unit without a window mounting kitNo window mounting kit is supplied with the unit.These models are designed for mounting through anopening in a wall. These units can be adapted towindow installation by purchasing an optional windowmounting kit. Consult your dealer to choose the kit thatis appropriate for your model and installation.

Room Heat PumpsHeat pumps work by moving heat instead of creating it. In thesummer, the cool indoor coil absorbs heat from your roomand moves it outdoors, providing cooling. In the winter, heatpumps reverse this operation. By lowering the temperatureof the outdoor coil below the outdoor temperature, the heatpump absorbs the heat from outdoors and moves it insideyour house. This heat transferring process is very efficient.For example, at 45°F outdoor temperature, a heat pump canprovide 2 ½ watts of heat for every watt of electricity itconsumes.As outdoor temperatures drop, the heating capacity andefficiency of the heat pump declines. At temperatures below45°F, it is likely that ice will form on the outdoor coil. Heatpump units are designed to operate as a heat pump aboveapproximately 40°F. Below 40°F, these units switch auto-matically from reverse cycle heat pump to auxiliary electricheating. No defrost is required. There is no minimumoperating temperature.

Annual InspectionIt is suggested that your unit be inspected by your dealer orservicer once a year. It is advisable to have the outer caseremoved and the unit thoroughly cleaned.

Note: The life of your unit may be greatly reduced if you livein a salt air or other corrosive type environment. Under theseconditions, the unit should be removed from its case andcompletely cleaned at least once a year. At that time anyscratches or blisters on the painted surfaces should besanded and repainted. Placing an algaecide tablet in theoutdoor side of the unit’s basepan is suggested in humidareas where algae formation is common. We recommend thefollowing algaecide cleaners: PanGuard® by Control ReleasedTechnologies, Inc. and CDC Anti-Clog® by Virginia KMP.

Front Grille and Filter RemovalThe front contains an air filter that can be removed. To cleanthe filter, use the following method for filter removal.

Grasp exhaust grille and hinge up.

Grasp filter handle and slide filter out of unit.

Optional Charcoal Air Filter InstallationRemove charcoal air filter from plastic bag. Insert three tabson right side of filter into three slots on filter frame. Carefullybow middle of filter until two tabs on filter can be inserted intotwo slots on filter frame. Relax bow.

Reinstall air filter by reversing removal procedure.

Front Grille and Cabinet CleaningGrille and cabinet may be cleaned with warm water and mildsoap or detergent. Cleaning and polishing compounds are notrecommended, as they may damage plastic surfaces.

Air Filter CleaningA dirty air filter reduces operating efficiency of unit. Filtershould be inspected at least once every week during opera-tion. Clean filter with vacuum cleaner or wash in warm waterand mild detergent. Filter should be thoroughly dried beforereplacing in unit. Do not operate unit without filter in place.

Fan Motor CareThe fan motor is permanently lubricated for long life. There isno need to oil the motor.

Slide-out Chassis Removal from Outer Case

1. Hinge front grille up.2. Remove air filter by grasping handle and lifting up.3. Remove 3 screws (1 each side and 1 behind filter) holding

plastic front to unit and remove front.4. If the unit has a screw holding the basepan clip to the

chassis, remove the screw.

CAUTIONTo reduce the risk of personal injury, be sure tohave sufficient help when moving your unit. Aroom air conditioner can weigh between 70 and240 pounds.

5. Using basepan handle, pull chassis straight out, slowlyand evenly, until approximately 9-12 inches extends fromouter case. Use both hands to grasp basepan and pullremaining chassis from outer case.

NOTE: Basepan clip is shipped in plastic bag with mountingscrew and condensate drain cup. Install clip after reinsertingchassis into outer case to prevent accidental chassis re-moval.

General Operating InstructionsWhile operation of all units is similar, controls vary slightlyfrom model to model. Operating Controls section showscontrol panel of unit purchased and gives detailed informationabout operation of controls.

Initial Start-Up and CoolingSelect the highest fan speed and set temperature control toits coldest position. When the desired temperature isreached, slowly move the temperature control toward awarmer setting until the compressor shuts off. The thermo-stat will then cycle the compressor on and off to maintain thisselected temperature. Adjust the fan speed for desired aircirculation.

Changing Airflow Direction BafflesAirflow on unit may be diverted left or right from center bybaffles. Upward and downward air discharge is provided bytilting louvers. Adjust baffles and tilt louvers for desiredairflow pattern. Unit also has automatic left to right airmovement with "Circulaire" feature. (See page 15 underOperating Controls.)

Airflow Around UnitCheck the indoor grille and outdoor louvers for obstructions toairflow. Do not block the airflow to and from the unit. If air isobstructed and/or deflected back into the unit, the airconditioner’s compressor may cycle on and off rapidly. Thiscould damage your unit.

Drain Cup Installation and UseYour air conditioner uses a system where the water removedfrom the indoor air (condensate) is channeled to the outdoorside of the unit. The outdoor fan blade has a “slinger” ringattached to it that dips into the water and slings the water ontothe outdoor coil surface. This is the sound of water you hearduring normal operation. The water quickly evaporates on thiswarm surface and improves the efficiency of your air conditioner.In normal conditions the unit can evaporate the water as fastas it is removed from the indoor air.However, in very humid conditions excess amounts of watermay drip off the unit chassis. If this proves to be a problem,install the condensate drain cup included with the unit to routeexcess water where it would not be a problem (see illustrationbelow).To install, remove the unit chassis from the outer case. Insertthe condensate drain cup through the recessed ½” hole on theback center flange of the outer case. Once inserted, place a½” diameter hose or tube on the drain cup bottom spout. Thehose allows you to route where you want the excess water togo. Reinsert the unit chassis into the outer case. The unitbasepan overflow hole will be positioned directly above thedrain cup and will catch any water that might run out.

Switchover Thermostat ControlEmergency heat switch overrides heat pump (compressor)and starts auxiliary electrical heater. When switch is ON,heat pump is locked out.

• Use emergency switch only when heat pump fails toprovide adequate heat. Cause of heat pump malfunc-tion should be determined by authorized servicer. Costof operating unit will increase when emergency heatswitch is engaged.

ELECTRICAL REQUIREMENTS

The 3-prong grounding plug minimizes thepossibility of electric shock hazard. If the walloutlet you plan to use is only a 2-prong outlet, it isyour responsibility to have it replaced with aproperly grounded 3-prong wall outlet.

Some models require 230/208-volt a.c.protected with a time delay fuse or circuitbreaker. These models should be installed ontheir own single branch circuit for bestperformance and to prevent overloadinghouse or apartment wiring circuits, whichcould cause a possible fire hazard fromoverheating wires.

CAUTIONDo not, under any circumstances, cut orremove the third (ground) prong from thepower cord.Do not change the plug on the power cord ofthis air conditioner.Aluminum house wiring may present specialproblems - consult a qualified electrician.

Power cord includes a current interrupter device.A test and reset button is provided on the plugcase. The device should be tested on a periodicbasis by first pressing the TEST button and thenthe RESET button. PREPARE THE CASE

Install the top mounting rail with 4 type Bscrews from the inside of the case.

Insert the frames for the accordion panelsinto the top mounting rail and the bottomframe guides. Attach the accordion panels to the side of the case using 3 type A screwson each side.

Note: When attaching the accordion panels,make sure to only screw the inner panels to the case sides.

Carefully slide the case into the window andcenter the case. Lower the window behindthe top mounting rail. Pull the bottom of thecase forward so that the bottom mountingrail is tight against the back of the windowstool. Mount the case to the window sill using4 type E screws. Drill pilot holes, if necessary.

Make sure the bolts and nuts are all of the way in both the left and right V-supports.

Grasp the inlet grille at the bottom cornersand pull it forward. Unhook it from its tophinges and set it aside.

Using the tab, pull up slightly on the filter to release it and pull it down and out.

Pull the coiled power cord from its shippedposition in the air discharge area. Attachthe front grille frame to the case by insertingthe tabs on the grille frame into the slots on the front top of the case. Push the grilleframe in. Reinstall the filter.

In order to reinstall the chassis and re-attach the air conditioner front cover, theinstalled outercase must be square and level from side to side. Use wood shimsbetween sides of case and finished open-ing - especially where case is secured toopening - to prevent warping or distorting.Check installed case for distortion usingcarpenter's square.

CAUTION

A finished opening 26 1/8-inches wide x 17-inches high isrecommended. The lower left inside corner of opening mustbe within 5 feet of an appropriate electrical outlet (see Useand Care manual for electrical requirements.)When wall thickness exceeds 9-inches, opening must bemodified to allow air to enter side louvers on case (see spe-cial instructions on back ). Do not install air conditioner inwalls thicker than 11 2/5-inches.

Brick Veneer or Frame Wall ConstructionSee CAUTION under General Instructions. Cut or buildrough opening large enough to allow a framed, finishedopening 17-inches high and 26 1/8-inches wide. When caseis properly positioned in opening, secure it to framing mate-rial with nails or screws driven through holes in sides ofouter case (shim case and predrill holes before securing).

Placement of Outer Case in OpeningPlace outer case in opening, flush against one side ofopening. Use carpenter’s level and ensure case is levelfrom side to side and has a 3/8-inch slope from front to back(back of case must be 3/8-inch lower than front to ensureproper condensate drainage). If needed, use shims to levelcase (from side to side) and to obtain proper back slope.Front of case must project ¾-inch (minimum) beyond in-side wall in order to attach air conditioner front frame. Ifframing indoor side of opening with wood molding (or otherdecorative material), extend outer case ¾-inch beyondmolding.When case is properly positioned in opening, use woodshims to fill any gaps between case and finished opening,especially in area where case will be secured to opening.Take care not to warp or distort case when installingshims. When installing unit in a wall over 9-inches thick,provisions must be made in wall opening to ensure free airflow to the side louvers. This can be accomplished bychamfering the vertical portions of the outside opening asshown.Ventilation louvers on top of case must not be obstructed.Do not attempt to install unit in walls thicker than11 2/5-inches.

Operating ControlsOperating your air conditioner properly helps you to obtain thebest possible results.This section explains proper air conditioner operation.IMPORTANT:

• If you turn off the air conditioner, wait at least 3 minutesbefore turning it back on. This prevents the air condi-tioner from blowing a fuse or tripping a circuit breaker.

• Do not try to operate your air conditioner in the coolingmode when outside temperature is below 61°F (16°C).Do not try to operate your air conditioner in the heatingmode when outside temperature is over 86°F (30°C).

NOTES:1. NOTE: Factory default setting is for °F. To convert to

°C, press the INCREASE / DECREASE buttonssimultaneously for approximately 5 seconds. To returnto °F, repeat the procedure.

2. In the event of a power failure, your air conditioner willoperate at the previous settings when the power isrestored.

Lights next to the touch pads on the air conditioner controlpanel indicate the selected settings.

ControlsPower Pad (Button)Turns air conditioner on and off. When turned on, thedisplay will show the room temperature.

DisplayShows the Set temperature when in HEAT, COOL orENERGY SAVER mode; shows the time remaining onthe Delay Timer; shows the room temperature when inFan Only mode. The SET light will turn on while setting.

Temp Increase / Decrease Pads

Use to set temperature when in HEAT (on some mod-els), COOL or ENERGY SAVER mode. The SET lightwill turn on while setting.

Delay Timer Increase (+) / Decrease (-) Pads

Each touch of the INCREASE / DECREASE padson the unit or the INCREASE (+) / DECREASE (-) padson the remote control will set the delay time when usingthe TIMER 0.5-24 hr. The SET light will turn on while setting.

Fan Speed Pads

Use to set the fan speed to LOW, MED, HIGH or AUTO,on the unit.NOTE: On the remote control, use the fan speed IN-CREASE (+) / DECREASE (-) pads to set the fan speedsto LOW, MED or HIGH. Use the AUTO pad to turn Autofan on.

Mode Pad

Use to set the air conditioner to COOL, ENERGY SAVER,FAN ONLY or HEAT (on some models) mode.

Timer Pads

TIMER ON - When the air conditioner is off, it can be setto automatically come on in 0.5 (1/2 hr.) to 24 hours atits previous mode and fan settings.TIMER OFF - When the air conditioner is on, it can beset to automatically turn off in 0.5 (1/2 hr.) to 24 hours.

How to set:Press the TIMER 0.5-24 hr pad on the unit or theTIMER padon the remote control. Each touch of the INCREASE / DECREASE pads on the unit or the INCREASE (+) /DECREASE (-) pads on the remote control will set thetimer in 0.5 (1/2 hr.) or 1-hour intervals. (The delay timercan be set in 0.5 (1/2 hr.) increments if programmed forunder 10 hours, but if the delay timer is set for above 10hours, the timer will be set in 1-hour increments.) TheSET light will turn on while setting.To review the remaining time ,press the TIMER 0.5-24 hr pad on the unit or the TIMER padon the remote control. Use the INCREASE / DE-CREASE pads on the unit or the INCREASE (+) /DECREASE (-) pads on the remote control to set a newtime if desired.To cancel the timer, press and hold the TIMER 0.5-24 hrpad until the light on the TIMER 0.5-24 hr pad goes off.

Swing Pad

Turn on to provide continuous side-to-side air circulation.For fixed side-to-side air direction, turn on until the de-sired air direction is obtained, then turn it off.

Remote Control:• To ensure proper operation, aim the remote control at

the signal receiver on the air conditioner.• The remote control signal has a range of up to 20 feet.• Make sure nothing is between the air conditioner and

the remote control that could block the signal.• Make sure your batteries are fresh and installed cor-

rectly as indicated on the remote control.

Cool ModeUse the COOL mode at LOW, MED, HIGH, or AUTOFAN SPEED for cooling. Use the TEMPERATURE IN-CREASE / DECREASE pads to set the desiredtemperature between 61° and 86°F in 1° increments.The compressor will cycle on and off to keep the room atthe set level of comfort. Set the thermostat at a lowernumber and the indoor air will become cooler. Set thethermostat at a higher number and the indoor air will be-come warmer.NOTE: If the air conditioner is off and then turned onwhile set to a COOL setting, or if it is turned from a fansetting to a COOL setting, it may take approximately 3minutes for the compressor to start and cooling to begin.

Cooling DescriptionsFor Normal Cooling - Select the COOL mode and HIGHor MED fan with a middle set temperature.For Maximum Cooling - Select the COOL mode andHIGH fan with a lower set temperature.For Quieter & Nighttime Cooling - Select the COOLmode and LOW fan with a middle set temperature.

Energy Saver ModeControls the fan.ON - The fan will cycle on and off with the compressor.This results in wider variations of room temperatureand humidity and is normally used when the room isunoccupied.NOTE: The fan may continue to run for a short time afterthe compressor cycles off.

OFF - The fan runs all the time, while the compressorcycles on and off.

Fan Only ModeUse the FAN ONLY mode at LOW, MED or HIGH fanspeed to provide air circulation and filtering without cool-ing. Since the fan only settings do not provide cooling, aSET temperature cannot be entered. The room tempera-ture will appear in the display.NOTE: Auto Fan Speed cannot be used when in the FANONLY mode.

Heat Mode (on some models)Use the HEAT mode at LOW, MED, HIGH or AUTO FANSPEED for heating. Use the TEMPERATURE INCREASE

/ DECREASE pads to set the desired tempera-ture between 61°F and 86°F in 1°F increments.

Auto Fan SpeedSet to AUTO fan speed for the fan speed to automati-cally set to the speed needed to provide optimum com-fort settings with the set temperature. If the room needsmore cooling, the fan speed will automatically increase.If the room needs less cooling, the fan speed will auto-matically decrease.NOTE: Auto Fan Speed cannot be used when in the FANONLY mode.

Power Outage Recovery FeatureIn the case of a power outage or interruption, the unit willautomatically re-start in the settings last used, after thepower is restored. If the TIMER 0.5-24 hr feature was set,it will resume countdown. You may need to set a newtime if desired.

To reduce algae growth, use algaecide tablet in base pan; remove drain plug; add condensate drain cup and hose. Thoroughly clean unit.

ODORS IN HEATING Normal for first time electric heater is used each season

Caused by dust accumulation during unused months.

Odor dissipates quickly with heater use.
