Last week…Paul introduces the idea of our new identity

providing the basis of change for the believer.

Page 4: Romans 6:10-11

Last week…Change for believers, as every Christian knows, is not automatic, as some have

claimed.

Page 5: Romans 6:10-11

Romans 6:5-6Paul is explaining our “walk in newness of

life”.

Page 6: Romans 6:10-11

Romans 6:5-6“United in the likeness…we shall also be

united…”Not a discussion of our future resurrection.

Page 7: Romans 6:10-11

Romans 6:5-6“United in the likeness…we shall also be

united…”A discussion of our new life as a result of

our union with Christ.

Page 8: Romans 6:10-11

Romans 6:5-6“Likeness”

“A state of having common experiences”BDAG p. 707

Page 9: Romans 6:10-11

Romans 6:5-6“United in the likeness…we shall also be

united…”We can expect to live as Christ lives!

Page 10: Romans 6:10-11

Romans 6:5-6But, why should we expect that?

Page 11: Romans 6:10-11

Romans 6:5-6Because of something we know about our

union with Christ.

Page 12: Romans 6:10-11

Romans 6:5-6Our “old self” died with Christ.

Page 13: Romans 6:10-11

Romans 6:5-6It has been replaced by our new self.

Eph. 4:20-24

Page 14: Romans 6:10-11

Romans 6:5-6This occurs when we believe.

Page 15: Romans 6:10-11

Romans 6:5-6We are born again or regenerated and are

baptized by the Holy Spirit.

Page 16: Romans 6:10-11

Romans 6:5-6That gives us a new inner person and unites us to the Body of Christ; in His death, burial,

and resurrection.

Page 17: Romans 6:10-11

Romans 6:5-6That whole “body of work”, body of sins we committed through our physical bodies, is in

our past and it’s rule over us has been broken.

Col. 2:11-15

Page 18: Romans 6:10-11

Romans 6:5-6The goal is that we should no longer be

enslaved to it.

Page 19: Romans 6:10-11

Romans 6:7We are freed from sin in that it no longer has

a claim to us in our inner self.

Page 20: Romans 6:10-11

Romans 6:8-9Death with Christ leads to life with Christ.

Page 21: Romans 6:10-11

Romans 6:8-9Our future experience with Christ in glory can

become our present experience!

Page 22: Romans 6:10-11

Romans 6:8-9Our future experience with Christ in glory can

become our present experience!1 Thess. 5:10; Rom. 8:11

Page 23: Romans 6:10-11

Romans 6:8-9Our death with Christ leads to our life with

Him!

Page 24: Romans 6:10-11

Romans 6:8-9It is critical that we know this fundamental

truth:“Christ, having been raised from the dead,

dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him.”

Page 25: Romans 6:10-11

Romans 6:8-9The life we share with Him is eternal life!

Page 26: Romans 6:10-11

Romans 6:8-9This eternal life is the life we experience

through our union with Him!Rom. 5:17; Gal. 2:20

Page 27: Romans 6:10-11

Romans 6:8-9Death’s authority is broken.

“Death reigned from Adam through Moses…”

However…

Page 28: Romans 6:10-11

Romans 5:20b-21“…Where sin abounded grace abounded

much more, so that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through

righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord”.

Page 29: Romans 6:10-11

Romans 6:10-11Christ no longer needs to deal with sin as He

did on the cross.

Page 30: Romans 6:10-11

Romans 6:10-11Christ no longer needs to deal with sin as He

did on the cross.

It has been permanently dealt with.

Page 31: Romans 6:10-11

Romans 6:10-11Christ lives His life now “fully oriented to

God”.(Hodges)

Page 32: Romans 6:10-11

Romans 6:10-11That’s how ours should be!

Page 33: Romans 6:10-11

Romans 6:10-11We are to live our lives with this Identification

Truth that begins in 6:3.

Page 34: Romans 6:10-11

Romans 6:10-11This is one of the first major actions believers

need to make.

Page 35: Romans 6:10-11

Romans 6:10-11The reality is that we are united to Jesus

Christ, dead to sin and alive to God.

Page 36: Romans 6:10-11

Romans 6:10-11Satan will go to great lengths to blur this

reality and gets cooperation from our flesh and the world!

Page 37: Romans 6:10-11

Romans 6:10-11“Consider”

Same word as God “imputing” righteousness earlier (4:3, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 22, 23, 24).

Page 38: Romans 6:10-11

Romans 6:10-11We are to live our lives regarding ourselves

the way God does; according to reality.

Page 39: Romans 6:10-11

Romans 6:10-11But, the further reality is that we don’t have

to live according to that reality.

Page 40: Romans 6:10-11

Romans 6:10-11Anyone who says believers can’t and don’t live contrary to their new lives is not being honest with their own lives and the reality

we all observe.

Page 41: Romans 6:10-11

Romans 6:10-11Nothing could be farther from the truth than that godly living is automatic for

believers.

Page 42: Romans 6:10-11

Romans 6:10-11This problem is not solved by inserting ideas

of godly living like “lifestyle” that are not, and cannot be, defined.

Page 43: Romans 6:10-11

Romans 6:10-11Practically, this theology leads only to

frustration and/or self-delusion.

Page 44: Romans 6:10-11

Romans 6:10-11However, the reality is that, with the proper

understanding, Christians can enjoy the victory Christ has brought!

Page 45: Romans 6:10-11

Romans 6:12-14When we “consider” this spiritual reality

true, it should result in behavior consistent with that reality!

Page 46: Romans 6:10-11

Romans 6:12-14Before believing, we allowed sin to rule our

lives by giving members of our body to a lifestyle consistent with it.

Page 47: Romans 6:10-11

Romans 6:12-14Now, we should give those same members to the goals and activities consistent with

godly living.

Page 48: Romans 6:10-11

Romans 6:12-14“Present” or “turn over” = To “put at one’s disposal”.

Page 49: Romans 6:10-11

Romans 6:12-14“Present” or “turn over” =

Something made available for a purpose.

Page 50: Romans 6:10-11

Romans 6:12-14Our commitment to new life should be

intentional!

Page 51: Romans 6:10-11

Romans 6:12-14Our bodies were made available for sin and now they should be made available to God

and His purposes.

Page 52: Romans 6:10-11

Romans 6:12-14In other words, our actions should match our

new attitudes.

Page 53: Romans 6:10-11

Romans 6:12-14Sin no longer has the ability to rule over us.

Page 54: Romans 6:10-11

Romans 6:14The idea is expressed well by the Anchor Bible,

“You must not allow sin to rule you”.(Fitzmyer, Romans, p. 447)

Page 55: Romans 6:10-11

Romans 6:14The Mosaic Law is not effective in helping us

grow.

Page 56: Romans 6:10-11

Romans 6:14When taken as a whole, vv. 12-14 teach us

that it is only the rule of grace that can free us from sin.

Page 57: Romans 6:10-11

Romans 6:14The reality is that all believers know that sin

can overwhelm us.

Page 58: Romans 6:10-11

Romans 6:14But, when Paul’s teachings are understood and followed, we can be assured that sin’s

dominion will not win out.

Page 59: Romans 6:10-11

Romans 6:14Like our risen Lord, we can experience

freedom from sin!
