  • 6TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME FEBRUARY 17, 2019

    FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

    Dear Parishioners,

This coming Friday, February 22nd, we celebrate a rather unusual feast day, the Feast of the Chair of Saint Peter the Apostle. Most feasts celebrate a saint or an event in the life of a saint. So why would we have a feast day honoring the “chair” of St. Peter? After Jesus died and ascended into Heaven, Peter evangelized in Jerusalem, and he was imprisoned there by King Herod. After an angel helped to free him, he continued to spread the Gospel in Jerusa-lem, and eventually he traveled to the cities of Anti-och, Corinth, and finally Rome. What better place to evangelize than in the heart of the civilized world. Peter probably lived in Rome for 25 years govern-ing the entire church from his chair. Peter had a wooden chair that he used while presiding over Mass. “Kathedra” is a Greek word which means “chair,” and a cathedra is the chair where a bishop sits. Cathedra is also the root word of Cathedral which is the church building that houses the chair of a bishop. There is a cathedra in the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist where Bishop Nelson Perez sits. Only a bishop is allowed to sit in the cathedra, so each cathedral has another presider’s chair where the rector of the cathedral would sit when he is cele-brating Mass. I had the honor of seeing in person the chair of St. Peter which is hanging behind the main altar in St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. The original chair used by St. Peter was encased in bronze and gold by the artist Bernini in 1647. The chair became sym-bolic of the power and authority entrusted to Peter by Christ. We hear Jesus say in the Gospel, “You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in Heaven; and whatever you loose on Earth shall be loosed in Heaven” (Matthew 16:18-19). The keys to the Kingdom that were en-trusted to Peter have been handed down to succes-sive popes throughout the centuries. And it’s the Chair of Saint Peter, which hangs in St. Peter’s Ba-silica, which is symbolic of the great responsibility that has been given to the Pope.

Have a blessed week! Father Joe

GENEROUS DONATION Henry Golinski, a long time parishioner of Saint Mary Church, died on November 17, 2017 at the age of 90. He generously left St. Mary $38,262 in his will. We remember Henry’s thoughtfulness and his service to our country in WWII as an army veteran, and we thank his family for leaving our church such a generous donation. May Henry Golinski’s soul and the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace, Amen.
