SAFETY

COMES FIRST

Rollover Prevention Our unified cause for keeping the roadways and highways safe is the

application of educating those that transport our many commodities through and across the united states. With out this unified effort to educate quality driving habits to prevent accidents and rollovers our

ability to have Safety First is diminished and lives are at risk.

Here are some facts to ponder

Vehicle Stability Depends on these factors Center of Gravity Distance Between Wheels Liquid Movement Speed change / Serge / Momentum

Page 6: Roll Over Power Point Advanced Edu Safety Gew 6 10 09

Centrifugal Force or CF

Is the force working sideways on a moving vehicle

Increases by the square of the speeddouble the speed = 2 squared (4) X the CF3 X the Speed = 3 squared (9) X the CF

Four Major Factors Contribute to a Rollover

High Center of Gravity Radius of CurveSlope of the RoadwaySpeed of the vehicle

Page 8: Roll Over Power Point Advanced Edu Safety Gew 6 10 09
Page 9: Roll Over Power Point Advanced Edu Safety Gew 6 10 09

High Center of Gravity

The higher the Center of Gravity of a vehicle and its load, the easier it is for the force of gravity to move outside the foot print of the vehicle that is traveling at the speed that will be the causal factor for the rollover to take place.

Seeing and recalling situations in the passed that I was involved in as an investigator always came up with stifling proof that these factors along with others were the underlying factors that contributed to the situation.

1. Speed

2. Being hurried for a signal light while turning or Lane change at intersection or Highway.

3. Liquid load serge

4. Other outside factors (A motorist)

5. Alcohol / Drugs

Potential of life that can be lost, property damage can cost thousands, Insurance costs go up, customers and potential customers can be lost.

Radius of Curve

The shorter or “tighter” the radius of curve, the greater the side force to “pull” the trailer over! “ROLLOVER”

Page 13: Roll Over Power Point Advanced Edu Safety Gew 6 10 09

Slope of the Roadway

The greater the slope or “crown” of the roadway the easier it is for the force of gravity to be outside the foot print of the vehicle “ROLLOVER”

Speed

Most influential factor Centrifugal Force increase in an amount

equal to the square of the vehicle’s speed Results in decreased driver response time

Driver’s Guidelines: Turns & Curves

Posted Curves

On sharp, curved roadways the safe speed

for tractor-trailers is 10 MPH below the posted warning entry or exit speed limits.

Driver’s Guidelines: Turns & Curves

Unmarked CurvesOn sharp, curved roadways which are not-posted,

the safe speed for tractor-trailers is 10 MPH !

Page 18: Roll Over Power Point Advanced Edu Safety Gew 6 10 09

Speed Cushion

As the SPACE cushion is the separation in

distance between vehicles, the SPEED cushion is the separation in MPH between ROLLOVER speed and a safe maneuvering speed within a curve.

Page 19: Roll Over Power Point Advanced Edu Safety Gew 6 10 09

Unsafe ManeuveringSudden evasive maneuvers have a high potential for rollover. Hard braking and sudden turning to avoid an obstacle or small car has resulted in numerous rollovers.

Page 20: Roll Over Power Point Advanced Edu Safety Gew 6 10 09

Unsafe Maneuvering

Side to side lane changes cause the liquid movement to ”come into phase” with the vehicle movement. This results in a lower rollover speed.

What is our answer to this education we have just seen?

Slow downBe a smart cautious driverBe educated on the latest techniques

of defensive driving (Smith System)Ask for help and broadcast it if others

need help.
