THE HIGHER SCHOOL CERTIFICATE 2018 IN BRIEFThe 2018 HSC results continue Trinity’s strong achievement in the NSW credential and, of equal importance, highlight the HSC as a fertile landscape for academic growth. This is a rigorous course of study which invites students to commit with diligence and resilience. When they do so, they are able to challenge themselves and achieve academic distinction.
In total, 127 Higher School Certificates were awarded to the class of 2018, with a median ATAR of 75.50, well above the State median score of 69.65. While two students were awarded 99.00 +, 21 percent of the HSC cohort enjoyed scores of greater than 90.00, compared to 16 percent across the State candidature.
The following lists highlight some of the accolades through which the New South Wales Education and Standards Authority (NESA) acknowledges outstanding effort and achievement.
TOP OF THE STATETo score an ATAR of 99 or greater is a momentous achievement and places students in the top 1% of the candidature. The following boys are congratulated for achieving this in the 2018 HSC:
Æ Jeremy Adams (Fo)
Æ Faybian Chow (Du)
HSC ALL ROUND ACHIEVEMENTTo qualify as an All Round Achiever a student must achieve the Band 6 in a minimum of ten units. Congratulations to the two students whose excellent performance across the breadth of their pattern of study earned this accolade:
Æ Jeremy Adams (Fo)
Æ Vasi MacMillan (Ho)
TOP ACHIEVERS IN COURSENESA also acknowledges students who achieve one of the top few coveted places in a course. Three students earned this honour in 2018;
Æ Jeremy Adams (Fo) | 4th in Ancient History
Æ Faybian Chow (Du) | Equal 10th in Mathematics Extension 1
Æ Ethan Hansford (He) | 3rd in Construction
DISTINGUISHED ACHIEVEMENTStudents achieving a top band in a course earn this accolade. Trinity boys achieved 102 Band 6 or E4 scores, resulting in 60 boys named on the Distinguished Achievers list.
Trinity students continue to perform well in areas of personal passion and personal challenge. Growth from Year 10 results is outstanding, building upon the foundational approaches to learning developed in the Trinity curriculum P - 12. While this willingness to embrace challenge and apply the habits of learning developed over many years is evident across a range of subjects, it is aptly illustrated in robust achievements of students in English and Mathematics.
In all Mathematics courses, 62 percent of students received results in the top two performance bands with some 41 students achieving top band results. An impressive number of students committed to the highly demanding Extension 1 and Extension 2 courses and all were rewarded with this course falling amongst their personal best, with 94 percent of these candidates achieving in the top two bands.
Ninety-five percent of our boys undertook the more demanding Advanced English and 54 percent of these students achieved in the top two bands. In contrast, across the state, fewer than 45 percent of candidates took this course. At the Extension English level, Trinity presented 20 candidates across Extension 1 and Extension 2, with 95 percent of students achieving in the top two Extension bands. Again, these students were rewarded with Extension results amongst their personal best.
HSC SHOWCASES AND EXHIBITIONSWhile several Trinity students were nominated for exhibition of major works and projects, congratulations are made to the following boys whose work was selected for showcasing:
Æ Eddie Azzi (Du) | HSC Visual Arts – ARTEXPRESS 2018
Æ Monty Guo (Ke) | HSC Music – Encore 2018
Æ Ethan Hansford (He) | HSC Design and Technology, Textiles and Design - Shape 2018

INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE DIPLOMA 2018 IN BRIEFWith 100 candidates registered for the Diploma and a further 22 registered for Anticipated Subjects, 2018’s cohort makes us one of only 13 schools world-wide with 100+ candidates. The IB results of 2018 have shown once again that the staff and students of Trinity Grammar School can rise to the challenge of ensuring growing numbers of diverse students reach their potential through the Diploma Programme.
Our 100 students presenting for the International Baccalaureate Diploma all achieved the award, averaging an IB score of 37.20, significantly exceeding the world average of 29.21 and that of the Australian landscape (34.56). Ninety-six percent of our candidates obtained scores in excess of the IB world average, showing our dominance in the international sphere. Domestically, our average equates to an ATAR of 94.62, with 23 students achieving an ATAR equivalent of 99+; 52 students at 95.00+ and an impressive 84 percent scoring 90.00+.
The following lists highlight some of the accolades through which the International Baccalaureate Organisation acknowledges outstanding effort and achievement.
FIRST IN THE WORLDNine Trinity students achieved the maximum score of 45, laying claim to the prestigious title of
‘Equal first in the World’ (ATAR equivalent of 99.95). This is an historical result for Trinity, and indeed Australian schools.

The cohort number of 100 IB students is significant, not only because there are so few Schools worldwide who are able to present this number of candidates, but because Trinity supported the diversity of these students, enabling each and every one to achieve personal results at an outstanding level. At the heart of this effort, of course, lies the Trinity philosophy: when boys are developed in mind, body and spirit, encouraged in their passions, and confident of success, they will reach their academic potential.
