The present duets are conceived entirelyin the idiom of the French Rococo. Thismusic was not intended for a large publicbut designed rather to be played for thepleasure of the performer or a quite smallgroup of listeners. Although the piecesare entitled “Sonate” they appertain moreto the Suite in their formal construction.
The pieces are taken from the VIVe andXLème œuvre de Mr. Boismortier, Con te -nant VI Sonates pour deux Baßons, Vio-loncelles ou Violes, Paris 1726 and 1732.
Michel Corrette, the composer of the lastSonata in our second part, was a man ofunusual musical gifts. He was not, likeBoismortier, merely a composer but alsoa wellknown organist and a player of ma-ny other instruments.
The present Sonata by him is taken fromhis Méthode théorique et pratique pourapprendre en peu de tems le Violoncelledans sa perfection, Paris 1741.
The expression marks in brackets, theslurs marked with little lines, and the fin-gering are editorial suggestions for theexecution by violoncellos. Trills are onlymarked with a t in the original. In manyplaces we have chosen the mordent sign.
