The Show was originally a play.-Original cast of Nine actors.
-Performed June 19, 1973 in the
Royal Court Theater.
-Spread rapidly to other theaters.
The show was made into a movie in 1975 and has been playing in theaters for 36 years in limited release.
About the Movie
The Movie had a budget of $1,200,000,
Had little success until the film hit Greenwitch New York in the Waverly theater. Where the culture first got its start.
- The Film started having regulars that attended every week.
-They sang along, dressed like the characters, and the film's culture began to take shape.
A Culture
“There has been a lot of change in the audience over the years. The level of acceptance and maturity [is a lot lower] than it was a decade ago.” (Interview-ash)
The culture focuses on free love and acceptance, audience participation, and a family-like community often compared to a cult.

The Virgin dance is a sort of initiation ceremony.
This tradition is not practiced in Europe, low turnout prevented the practice from developing.
In North Carolina the virgin dance is...The Time Warp!
-It's a jump to the left, a step to the right, put your hands on your hips, bring your heels in tight, and do the pelvic thrust!
