Greetings! Welcome to our first edition of the 2013 - 2014 NASA Rock-et News! As you look through these pages we hope you are able to see many examples of just how happy our NASA family is about the new school year! We ended last school excited about starting our new Tran-sitional Kindergarten program and welcoming our new students and staff! We continue to be so very proud of our students. Let’s keep reaching for the stars as we work together for the success of our entire school community.

Get enough sleep the night before your test. Your memory recall will be much better if you had enough rest.

Listen closely to any instructions. As the teacher hands out the test, be sure you know what’s expected of you.

Show up on time. Get the test off to best possi-ble start by getting there on time. Arriving late might make you feel rushed and nervous, and ar-riving too early could give you time to sit there and worry about things.

Interview with Ms. Fernandez

What is your favorite color? My favorite color is red. What is your favorite movie? My favorite movie is Hachi: A Dog’s Tale. What is your favorite book? My favorite book is Isaiah. What is your favorite place? My favorite place is church and the violin room where I take my violin classes. Who is your hero and why? My hero is my mom because she’s always been there for me during good and bad times despite hardships. What is your favorite holiday? Thanksgiving because you get to reunite with family and friends and get to eat a lot of food. Why do you like working at NASA? NASA is very different compared to traditional set-tings. Kids have space to grow and express themselves without fear. It has helped me discover things about my own character and has helped me grow.

Testing Tips With the school year in full swing, stresses of test taking begin. Here are some helpful tips to man-age that stress and do your best on an exam.

Don't rush. Try to keep a good pace-but never rush through a question. Make sure you under-stand what is being asked, then make sure you think clearly about your answer. If the question is multiple-choice, read every single possible an-swer before you decide which one is the best.

Be aware of key words such as “all”, “now”, “always”, “never”, “only”, ”exactly”.

Look for information in some of the ques-tions. This information may help you answer oth-er questions.

Look for negative words like “not”, “no”, and “never”.

Bring your family to the LACMA for free! LACMA is free for children under the age of 18! Each child may

also have a free adult with the NexGen pass. You can get a pass from Ms. Koehler or simply come to the museum and sign up there! LAC-MA also offers classes, camps, library workshops and a free day for the family.

Invite your child to read with you every day.

Read your child's favorite book over and over again.

Read many stories with rhyming words and lines that repeat. Invite your child to join in on these parts. Point, word by word, as he or she reads along with you.

Stop and ask about the pictures and about what is happening in the story.

How you can help your child become a stronger reader?

Parent Volunteers

Uniform Policy It is required for all NASA students to follow the dress code. The uniform consists of a burgundy polo and navy blue pants, shorts, or skirts. Sweatpants, jeans, and oversized pants are not permitted. Shorts and dresses must be knee length. Skirts and dresses must be worn with shorts underneath. Any long sleeve shirts worn underneath uniform shirts must be navy blue or burgundy. Open-toed shoes, flip-flops, and slippers are not permitted. Any jewelry that can be de-termined to be unsafe or a distraction to the learning process is not permitted. Make-up, body markings, nail polish, and nail tips are not permitted. Male students are not allowed to wear any body piercings, including ear piercings.

Thank you to all the parents who have been helping and donating their time at NASA. Schools function best when they have parents involved. Join us every Friday as we meet to make of NASA a better place for our students. Remember, every parent is responsible to do 20 hours of service.

NASA Soccer Team Congratulations to our NASA Rockets soccer team for a job well done! Dur-ing our summer vacation and under expert leadership of our coaches Mr. Benavides and Mr. Castro, our teams excelled. Every player was a real trooper in a very hot weather. They won the first game against Gratts

Elementary and tied the second game against Es-peranza Elementary. They improved through hard work in practice sessions and should be very proud of their accomplishments. At every game, our NASA players demonstrated great team spirit and gave the tournament many moments of excite-ment. Mr. Benavides would like to acknowledge the scor-ers: Mauricio Valle and Michael Mateo. Go NASA Rockets!

Eating with the Seasons: Filling up on Fall’s Bounty

Why Eat in Season?

Tips for Eating in Season

1.) Good for your health. Produce is most

nutritious when harvested at peak ripe-

ness.

2.) Good for your wallet: Foods are typical-

ly cheaper when they are in season.

3.) Good for the environment:

Less energy is required to grow and

transport foods in season.

1.) Shop at your local farmers market. The

food you find there is fresh and local, and the

vendors can tell you which foods will be availa-

ble at different times of year based on sea-

sonality of your area.

2.) Look for signs in the produce section of

your grocery store indicating which fruits and

vegetables are in season. Usually what is sea-

son is what is on sale!

3.) Look at produce labels to see where the

food has come from. If it is from very far

away, it is not likely in season in your area.

4.) Be creative with your cooking. Try using

seasonal ingredients that you don’t normally

cook with.

Safe Moves Presentation

Pedestrian Safety Tips:

During the student assembly earlier this month, students had the opportunity to listen and learn about traffic safety.

10/25-10/29: Red Ribbon Week 10/31: Fall Festival. Student Assembly.

Walk on sidewalks, paths, and cross at street corners using traffic signals and crosswalks.

Put down any phone devices and then look left, right and left again when crossing the street.

Make eye contact with drivers before crossing the street and watch out for cars that are turn-ing or backing up.

Never run or dart out into the street or cross between parked cars.

Children should cross the street with an adult. Always be aware of your surroundings Never play in a street, parking lot, or driveway. Walk when crossing an intersection—don’t

run!

A través de estas páginas, esperamos que puedan ver muchos ejemplos de que feliz esta nuestra familia de NASA sobre el nuevo año escolar! Ser puntual. Empieza la prueba con el mejor co-mienzo posible por llegar a tiempo. Llegar tarde puede hacerte sentir apurado y nervioso y llegan-do demasiado pronto podría dar tiempo a sentado y preocuparse por las cosas.

Cual es tu color favorito? Mi color favorito es rojo. Cual es tu pelicula favorita? Mi pelicula favorita es Hachi: A Dog’s Tale. Cual es tu libro favorito? My libro favorito es Isaiah. Cual es tu lugar favorito? Mi lugar favorito es la iglesia, y el salon donde tengo mis clases de violin. Quien es tu heroe? Mi mama es mi heroe porque ha estada a mi lado duarnte tiempos buenos y malos a pesar de las difi-cultades. Cual es tu dia festivo favorito? Accion de gracias porque nos reunimos con familiares y amigos y cenamos juntos. Porque te gusta trabajar en NASA? NASA es diferente en comparacion con otros trabajos tradicionales. Los niños tienen espacio para crecer y expresarse sin temor. Me ha ayudado a descubrir cosas sobre mi caracter y me ha ayudado a crecer.

Consejos para examenes El año escolar en sesion, comienzan las tensio-nes de tomar examenes. Aquí están algunos con-sejos para controlar el estres y poder hacer su mejor esfuerzo en el examen.

No te apures. Tratar de mantener un buen rit-mo, pero nunca tener prisa a través de una pre-gunta. Asegúrese de que entienda lo que se pide, entonces asegúrese de que piense claramente en su respuesta. Si la pregunta es de opción múlti-ple, lea cada respuesta posible antes de decidir cuál es el mejor.

Escuchen atentamente a las instruccio-nes. Cuando el profesor reparte la prueba, ase-gúrese de que sabe qué se espera de usted.

Ser conscientes de palabras clave como "todo", "ahora", "siempre", "nunca", "sólo", "exactamente".

Lea el libro favorito de su hijo una y otra vez

Lea muchas historias con palabras que riman y lineas que se repiten. Invite a su hijo a participar en estas partes. Apunte, palabra por palabra, cu-ando su hijo/a lea con usted.

Parar y preguntar sobre los dibujos y lo que esta sucediendo en las historias.

Como Puede Ayudar a su Hijo ser un Lector Mas Fuerte?

Poliza de Uniforme Se requiere que todos los estudiantes de NASA sigan el código de vestir, que consiste de un polo color vino y pantalo-

nes, faldas, o pantalones cortos azul marino. “Sweatpants”, pantalones de mezclilla, o pantalones ajustados o demasiado grandes no son permitidos. Faldas, vestidos, y pantalones cortos deben llegar a la rodilla. Pantalones cortos deben de ser usados debajo de faldas y vestidos. Camisa de manga larga debajo de la camisa de uniforme debe ser azul marino o color guinda. Sandalias, zapatos que son abiertos, y pantuflas no son permitidos. Cualquier joyas que pueden ser determinada a ser peligrosa o una distracción al proceso de aprendizaje no serán permitidos. Maquillaje, marcas al cuerpo, el esmalte de uñas, y uñas postizas no serán permitidas. Estudiantes varones no serán permitidos usar aretes. Suéteres deben de ser color azul marino o color vino, y no debe de tener logos, símbolos, o números.

Gracias a todos los padres que han estado ayudando y donando su tiempo en NASA. Las escuelas funcionan mejor cuando tienen pa-dres involucrados. Reunase con nosotros ca-da viernes para hacer NASA un lugar mejor para nuestros estudiantes. Recuerde que cada padre es responsable de hacer 20 horas de servicio voluntario.

Equipo de futbol ¡ Felicidades a nuestro equipo de fútbol, los NASA Rockets, por un tra-bajo bien hecho! Durante nuestras vacaciones de verano y bajo la direc-ción experta de nuestros entrenadores Mr. Benavides y Mr. Castro, desta-caron nuestros equipos. Cada jugador era un verdadero soldado en un cli-

ma muy caliente. Ganaron el primer partido con-tra Gratts Elementary y empataron el segundo partido contra Esperanza Elementary. Mejoraron a través de trabajo duro en los entrenamientos y deben estar muy orgullosos de sus logros. En cada juego, los jugadores de NASA demostraron gran espíritu de equipo y dieron el torneo muchos mo-mentos de emoción. Mr. Benavides quisiera reconocer las pun-tuaciones de goles: Mauricio Valle y Michael Mateo. Vamos NASA Rockets!

Aprovechando la Generosidad del Otoño

Porque comer de acuerdo a la epoca?

Consejos para comer en epoca

1.) Es bueno para su salud: Los productos agric-

olas son los mas nutritivos cuando se los co-

secha en su punto de madurez.

2.) Es bueno para la billetera: Tipicamente, la

comida es mas barata cuando esta en epoca.

3.) Es bueno para el ambiente: Se require

menos energia para cultivar y transportar las

comidas que estan en epoca.

1.) Compre en su mercado agricola. La comida

es fresca, del area y los vendedores le puden

decir que comidas habra en diferentes epocas.

2.) Busque letreros en la seccion de productos

agricolas en el mercado que indiquen cuales

frutas y vegetales son del tiempo. General-

mente, la comida que esta en epoca es la que

esta en rebaja!

3.) Fijese en las etiquetas de los productos

agricolas para ver donde proviene la comida. Si

es de muy lejos, es mas probable que no este

en epoca en su area.

4.) Intente ser creativa con su cocina. Cocine

con ingredientes de epoca que normalmente no

use.

Presentacion de Safe Moves

Durante la asamblea estudiantil a los principios de este mes, los estudiantes tuvieron la oportunidad de escuchar y aprender sobre seguridad de trafico.

10/25-10/29: Semana del liston rojo. 10/31: Festival de Otoño. Asemblea de estu-diantes.

Consejos de seguridad:

Caminar por las aceras, caminos y cruzar en las es-quinas usando las señales de tránsito y las cruces de peatones.

Baja cualquier dispositivos de teléfono y luego mi-rar a la izquierda, derecha y la izquierda otra vez al cruzar la calle.

Hacer contacto visual con los conductores antes de cruzar la calle y cuidado con los carros. Nunca co-rra a la calle o cruce entre coches estacionados.

Los niños deben cruzar la calle con un adulto. Siempre ser consciente de sus alrededores Nunca jugar en la calle, estacionamiento o camino

de entrada. Cuando cruce una intersección a pie — no corra.
