for the Arts and the Nation-al Park Service announcedon May 31 that they are pro-

viding funding of $1, 067,50 0in support of 50 grants in27 states. As part of this, anaward of $20,000 will go tothe Rockaway Artists Allianceto support the production ofa special exhibit of commis-sioned works of Street Art inFort Tilden – Forbidden Fruit:Street Art in a National Park.The exhibit will be shown inRockaway Artists Alliance’ssTudio 7 Gallery and on spe-cially installed Art Walls onthe grounds. This project cel-ebrates the centennial of theNational Park Service occur-ring this year.

Glover Tribute

On Memorial Day, a newtree at Memorial Circle, wasdedicated to Lance Cpl. Mi-chael Glover who died whileserving with the US Marines in

August, 2006. Glover, who wasborn in St. Francis de Salesparish, joined the service after9/11. In a letter from Iraq, he

wrote: “I took an oath — andit’s the best oath I ever took.I’m at peace if I come back

with parts of me missing. AndI’m at peace if I don’t comeback at all.” Previously, Beach134th Street in Belle Harbor

St. Patrick’s Day may bebehind us, but there’s never

a bad time to celebrate Irishculture in a place that wasonce called the Irish Riviera.The Ancient Order of Hiber-nians Division 21’s 4th Annu-al Rockaway Beach/ BreezyPoint Irish Festival will cele-brate with a whole weekendof Irish music, dance, foodand goods.

On Saturday, June 4 andSunday, June 5, from 11 a.m.to 8 p.m. all are invited to en-

joy som e festive fun in theparking lot of St. CamillusChurch (Beach 100th andShore Front Parkway). In2013, the AOH revived theold Rockaway tradition ofthe Irish Festival, bringingit back as a family-friendlyevent, which has grown suc-cessfully over the years. Last

year’s Irish Fest ival was a big

hit as the AOH sold out of all5,000 event bracelets on thefirst day. Festival Chairper-son John Manning says theevent has become the larg-est Irish festival in New YorkCity.

Manning says it’s impor-tant continue this traditionand give the community an-other way to come together

for something positive. “Welive in a very Irish communi-ty and it’s important to keepthe traditions of our heritagealive and it’s nice to see thecommunity come out for this

whether you’re from Rocka- way, Breezy or Broad Chan-nel,” he said. Another impor-tant aspect of the festival isthat it’s a major fundraiser

for the community. Manningsays that so far, the AOH hasraised $103,000 from the fes-tival, which goes back to the

community. The AOH hasdonated much of the moneyto churches like St. Camillus,St. Rose, St. Francis de Sales,Blessed Trinity in BreezyPoint and organizations likethe Breezy Point CatholicClub, the Knights of Colum-bus and more.

One of the major highlightsof the Irish Festival is the vari-ety of Irish music. Saturday’slineup starts with the Brook-lyn Bards at 12 p.m., fol-lowed by Jameson’s Revengeat 2 p.m, the all female rockband, Screaming Orphansat 4 p.m. and the night willfinish off with the ever-pop-ular Shilelagh Law at 6 p.m.The great tunes will continueon Sunday with Andy Coon-

I could write the opposite of thecolumn Be Well, Be Happy. FeelPain, Be Cranky, I could knock thatoff in my sleep. Not that I get anysleep – shoulder pain keeps wakingme the hell up. Still, it’s an idea for anew column There’s not that muchdifference between the chants at

yoga class and the sounds I makegetting in and out of a chair. They saymmmmmmm…..and I say uuhhh-hhhhoooooouhhhh…. Same stuff.

Anyway, last week I bored you with a quacky diagnosis that your

pain is in your head. You mighthave bulging disks and pinchednerves but the pain is really just amanifestation of the stress and ten-sion in your life. Some of you sayhooey but I know there were peo-ple who read the column and gift-

wrapped it for their complainingspouse to see.

It was like that old TV commercial where bottles of Scope mouthwash would be left anonymously so peo-ple with death breath would catcha hint. The Rockaway Times just

lot. We just about never, eversee a dog roaming alone. Ifdogs are with their owners

Te former army base, FortTilden, is taking a turn as a

canvas.It’s been three years since

MoMA PS1’s VW Dome 2brought a much needed a dis-traction to a battered com-munity. It was art intervening

with life by providing perfor-mances, dance, yoga, garden-ing classes, instruction in artand ecology, and a screeningof a lm.Tat led to Rockaway!in summer of 2014, primarilyat Fort Tilden, which featuredsolo projects by Patti Smith,

Adrián Villar Rojas, and JanetCardiff as well as a group showat the Rockaway Beach SurfClub.Te rst go-around of Rock-

away! proved to be a huge suc-cess as big crowds visited thepark throughout its 2014 sum-mer run. Now, in another nodto rebirth, a building in Fort

Tilden damaged by HurricaneSandy and long in decay will

become art and Rockaway! islikely to draw crowds from farand wide.

MoMA PS1 is back on thepeninsula with a special out-door exhibit by artist Kathar-ina Grosse. In a press releasefrom MoMA PS1, Grosse “isacclaimed for exploring themedium of painting in regardsto its locations, conditions andpossibilities.Trough this tem-porary public art installation,Grosse turns Fort Tilden’s de-caying aquatics building into asublimely exhilarating exteriorpainting with her unique spraypainting technique.”Te exhibition starts its near

As a kid I always thoughtlooking out from the beachthat I was staring at Europe. Itseemed natural to think thatlooking out across the wa-ter my gaze would eventuallyend on the shores of Spain,France, England or Ireland.The water is east, right. Well,it took me 33 years of livingin Rockaway to figure out

what the natives have alwaysknown: looking out over the

water is south. You see Rocka- way juts out almost parallel toLong Island and a bit perpen-dicular to the mainland, andpoints south of all places.

This means that facing the water is south and turningto the right will allow you to

watch the sun set bec auseto the right is west. Now thetough part about this means

that if you turn to the leftfacing the water you will be

facing east of all places andthat will eventually get you toEurope. Kind of makes sensebecause if you have ever seenthe sun rise in Rockaway, youknow it rises to your left fac-ing the beach. You know thisbecause you are either anearly riser, or sometimes you

wake up on the beach aftera good night! If it’s Canada

you’re interested in, then faceaway from the beach and looktoward the bay. That’s north,confusing right?

I still haven’t figured out whether a Nor’easter meansthat the storm is coming fromthe northeast towards us;or, it’s coming from the westheading toward the north-east. I figure I have about 25more years to figure that oneout.

Phones and cars have GPSnow and can tell us all this;

you don’t real ly need a com-pass anymore. But they arefun to play with, and are help-ful when you’re lost in a forestand you left your cell phonerecharging somewhere. It

would be great if any of thesedevices could help with ourmoral compass too. Wouldn’tit be awesome to simply lookat your phone when faced

with a moral dilemma andhave it point toward the rightanswer, the right thing to do?Those directions are evenharder to fathom than which

way is south at the shore.They sometimes take a life-time to learn. We go to schooland learn the lessons of thegreat masters in philosophy;and we are born into the reli-gions of our parents, teachingus right from wrong. But like

looking out from the shore,sometimes its hard to figure

out which way is which.There are some simple

rules, just like looking for theNorth Star to navigate from:be kind to others, treat every-one with respect, and don’tbe mean. I am fond of para-phrasing a saying that hangsin the mermaids’ yoga school:many paths, one truth. Mean-ing no matter what religion orphilosophy you ascribe t o, theNorth Star is always north.

So know the simplest rulesare the best. You don’t needan iPhone to tell you to bei-nice, just treat people the

way you want to be treatedand it will all work out. NowI wonder, is it true what welearned as kids, that if we diga hole in the sand at t he beach

we would reach China? I bet-ter Google that one.

Further-more it is one of several on RBB

between 108th Street and 104thStreet in some state of disrepair.Te one pictured is of particularconcern because it both at a busstop and outside of a busy store(Rite Aid). Will the city wait un-til someone falls and sues themuntil they x it? Or will they sim-ply continue to give residents ofthe block a lovely peek at whatsewer water looks like?

If you are not familiar withMoMA PS1, it is one of thelargest art institutions in theUnited States dedicated sole-ly to contemporary art. TeQueens based organizationhas its headquarters in Long

Island City and was founded in1971 with the mission of turn-ing abandoned, underutilizedbuildings in New York City intoartist studios and exhibitionspaces. MoMA PS1 andTe Mu-seum of Modern Art formalizedtheir affi liation in January 2000,bringing together a leader in

cutting-edge art and the world’sforemost museum of modernart. Under the leadership of Di-rector Klaus Biesenbach, theprincipal objective is to pro-mote the enjoyment, apprecia-tion, study, and understandingof contemporary art to a wideand growing audience.

Biesenbach notes the fol-lowing on Instagram “one ofthe most iconic buildings inthe Rockaways are the formeraquatics in Fort Tilden. Built

when the fort was a militarybase they have been aban-doned for many years and they

were already more or less a teardown before Hurricane Sandy.In autumn they will make wayfor restoring the natural beachhabitat and vegetation in oneof New York City’s most uniqueinner city nature reserves di-

rectly on the Atlantic Ocean.Protective dunes and vegeta-tion will be there where theruins are now. Nature wins...but I will visit these buildingsmany times this summer be-fore they’re gone.”

Biesenbach, who has a housein the Rockaways, recently

told the NY Times “Here’s a very beautiful found object. Ithas history as being a militaryfortress, as being ecologicallychanged because of the hurri-cane. Now it’s being restoredto its natural habitat.”Te RAA has developed

a special relationship withMoMA which began afterSandy. Essentially homelessafter the storm, the “Dome”allowed the RAA to continuetheir workshops and month-ly meetings as well as estab-lish a relationship with KlausBiesenbach. “The relation-ship with MoMA helps theRAA to achieve its mission ofbringing Manhattan-calibershows and exhibits to Rock-away residents along withnurturing local talent,” RAAEducation Director Christine

Mullally said. “It is a won-derful mix of internationaland local talent.” The RAA’scontribution to Rockaway! isthe Forbidden Fruit exhibit

which begins on July 7 at theT7 building and the gardenbehind it.Te third part of Rockaway!

Dear Editor,(In response to the Ferry Sen-

sible letter of 5/19/2016) First we would like to thank SusieJuszczak for her acknowledgingthe signicance of obtainingover 1,600 signatures for DECK-ELMAN’S LANDING. Althoughshe neglected to mention thehundreds of heartfelt commentsby those who fell strongly forDECKELMAN’S LANDING. We

will correct her numbers, thereare 130,000 – 140,000 residentson the Rockaway Peninsula. Anyresident that has ever used a pe-tition for any worthy endeavor

will attest to the fact that no one will ever get a majority of Rock-away residents to sign any pe-tition. We rmly disagree withthe naming of our dock to bea minor issue. Hopefully theRockaway Ferry will sail intoRockaway in 2017 and will lastindenitely, as will its name.

Long after Laura Deckelman isno longer with us.

To accept the true reality ofhow the ferry arrived in Rock-away would be to recognize“Super Storm” (Sandy) is whatbought it to our shores. For many

years Rockaway desired a ferry;however “NO ONE” was able toaccomplish this desire. We alsobelieve if not for Laura’s day today work in promoting the ferry

we would have not been on thelist to have a permanent ferrystop in Rockaway. Frankly per-sonalities have no bearing onour starting and continuing thepetition, nor did Laura have anyidea we would do so.

Yes, we will acknowledgeothers also put time and eff ortinto keeping the Ferry once itarrived, including Danny andI but NO ONE only Laura rode

the ferry every day come rain,snow etc., along with takingher exceptional photographs

which made many aware ofher devotion to Rockaway andour Ferry, including City Hall,

which is instrumental in ourcause. Tere are many heroesthroughout our City and we are

certain there has been and willcontinue to be ways to honorthem. We feel strongly it is timefor a Rockaway resident to behonored and acknowledgedfor all her constant daily work,letter writing attending meet-ings, etc. a vibrant woman anda team player who will contin-ue to ride our ferry along withher beautiful photography.Once again thanks to the twelveElected Offi cials who signedour petition.Tey along with usare very aware; to get anythingdone in the City of New York youneed to begin way in advance. I

will admit I do nd the idea of“an open forum” rather amus-ing. Ideas are often simple and

well intentioned; however theactuality of working such an ideais not. For instance who, when,

where, how, along with who will

organize, send out notices and who will run the meeting? Teprocess of a petition could havebeen utilized by anyone who

would have been willing to puttheir eff ort, time and energy intodoing so.

As opposed to past years,the AOH will be running bothtents at this weekend’s event

where food and beverag es will be available for purchas e.They’ll have snacks likecorned beef, hamburgers andhot dogs from Ludwig’s Ca-tering. This year’s beer spon-sors include Anheuser-Buschand Guinness. Manning saysthat due to the festival’s suc-cess, the beer companies ac-tually reached out to the or-ganizers this year. “When wefirst started this festival, theydidn’t think it would become

what it has become and this year they reac hed out to us tobe the beverages of choice forthe event,” he said.

This year’s festival willhave a record 25 vendors

selling Irish goods like jew-elry, clothing, handbags andmore. Many of the vendors

will acc ept cre dit cards, butRidgewood Savings Bank

will be on-site with a mobile ATM. A unique vendor hasalso been invited this year.In keeping with the missionof celebrating Irish heritage,

Ancestry .com will be on siteto help guide those who arecurious about their own her-itage. “We reached out to An-cestry this year. We felt a lotof people don’t know theirhistory or where their familycame from so we approachedthem and they’ll be here andthey’re even reaching out toother cultural festivals nowbecause they thought it wasa good idea,” Manning said.

Wanting to bre ak away fromthe bad reputation of Rocka-

way ’s old Irish Festival hel daround Beach 108th, the AOHprides itself on not havingany negative situations take

place during the event. The

new Irish Festival is a fun dayfor the whole family, includ-ing kids. General admissionis $10, but kids under 12 arefree. There are also bouncycastles and other rides plusfree face painting to keep the

wee ones entertained.The annual Rockaway

Beach/ Breezy Point IrishFestival is made possible by

AOH Division 21. Manningsays all of his brother Hiber-nians help with the event insome way as it takes plentyof time and money to planand it has brought themeven closer. “Our motto isFriendship, Unity and Chris-tian Charity, and you see allof that throughout the fes-tival,” Manning said. FellowHibernians will join for theevent including those fromother divisions and even TimMcSweeney, president of theNYS Board of AOH, will paya visit. AOH Division 21 has160 members, making it thesecond largest in the state.New members are always

welcome. A member must bea male, at least 16-years-oldand a Roman Catholic withIrish heritage. Applicationsand more info can be foundat www.aohrbny21.org or atthe AOH’s recruitment tent at

the festival.Coolers and beach chairs

will not be welcome but there will be some seating availa-ble. The event is rain or shine.

As we go to press, Saturdaycalls for a partly cloudy dayin the high 70s and a chanceof rain on Sunday. The event

will be relocated into the gymof St. Camillus if the weatherdoesn’t cooperate.

No matter the weather, thefestival is going to createa great atmosphere for all.“Come enjoy the company,enjoy the bands and comeout for a great day with yourfamily and friends. One Silly Rule At A Time

Well another MemorialDay weekend is in the histo-ry books. It was kicked off onFriday at the offi cial beachopening with the usual cast ofcharacters. Despite the stun-ning weather the opening

wasn’t as much of a celebra-tion as it could have been dueto the unfinished boardwalk,restricted access and closedbeaches from Beach 108th to126th Street. Perhaps this is

why Mitchell Silver showedup to this year’s ceremony in-stead of Bill de Blasio.

There was some good newshowever. The Parks Depart-ment made two announce-ments regarding rule changesthat should make this sum-mer season more enjoyable.

Effective immediately,people are now able to ride

their bikes on the boardwalkon weekends and holidays.

Hooray! There are signsasking riders to dismount inthe concession areas whichmakes sense, especially whenthey are crowded. Maybe

when the concessions are re-built there will be some ac-commodation for some sortof bypass.

Currently the boardwalk isshut down from 10 PM to 6

AM every day. Maybe at onetime this rule made sense butnow that we are faced wit h thechoice of walking or biking ona new $200+ million board-

walk or roads decimated byDOT, we need the legal use ofthis boardwalk 24/7. Thereare other laws to deal withpeople who misbehave on theboardwalk at any hour.

Parks’ other big announce-ment was the partial rolling

back of kayaking restrictions, which had essentially made

the Atlantic Ocean complete-ly off limits to these boats.

Two years ago the New YorkState Health Departmentdetermined that kayakingshould be treated the sameas fishing, scuba diving andsurfboarding. This meantthat kayaks can be launchedfrom bathing beaches duringnon-bathing hours (before 10

AM and after 6 PM) and fromnon-bathing beaches at anytime. (note: kayaks can landon any beach at any time.) Forsome reason however, NYCParks never changed theirrules to comply with the NYSHealth Code.

On Friday CommissionerSilver announced the forma-tion of two dedicated kayak-ing beaches on Beach 32ndSt. and Beach 57th St. as well

as launching privileges frombathing beaches before 10

AM. For reas ons unknown,Parks continues to deny kay-akers legal access into theocean after 6 PM on bathingbeaches and from non-bath-ing beaches at any time.

Kayakers in Rockaway andon other city beaches have

waited long enough. Com-munity Board 14 recently vot-ed unanimously to ask theCity to follow the State HealthCode as written. Parks’ con-tends that it will be confus-ing to swimmers who are be-ing chased out of the water ifkayakers are allowed to go in.I’m pretty sure people can fig-ure it out.

The Parks Dept. should becommended for this progressin revising its archaic bike andkayak restrictions. Let’s notstop now!

The Swellife:Rockaway’s Latest Fashion Truck

Something swell has hit theroad. The Swellife, a brand

new fashion and lifestyle mo-bile boutique launched overthe holiday weekend.

Mobile fashion boutiqueshave become trendy in recent

years, even around Roc kaway.End of the A started the trendlocally when it launched inthe summer of 2014. NowKatie Long of Rockaway Parkhas jumped on the band-

wagon with her first fashiontruck. She made her debutat the Rockaway Beach Fash-ion Night at the CommunityHouse on Wednesday, May25 and held a grand open-ing in front of Playland Motelover Memorial Day weekend,

which was a big hit.The Swellife truck may

appear bare bones on theoutside, but as soon as you

walk up the staircase, you’re

transported into a cute bou-tique, complete with flamin-go-printed walls, a skylightand even a fitting room, that

makes you quickly forgetthat it’s on four wheels. Longcalls The Swellife a “wom-en’s fashion, accessories andbeachgear store,” as you’llfind comfy shirts, tank tops,dresses, towels, sandals, hats,

jewelry and even Blue BottleIced Coffee. The store car-ries American-made brandsand some unique handmadeitems from other countries.“I only sell brands that Iuse myself that are made in

Americ a or made by peo-ple who it directly benefits,such as African fans made by

women in Nigeria and Peru- vian goods that ladies in Perusell directly at markets,” Longsaid. She also makes someof the items herself suchas some of the jewelry andscreen-printed shirts. Many

of the items are catered to young to middle-aged wom-en, but during her weekenddebut, Long found items likestraw hats and towels to be abig hit among men. The prod-ucts suit a range of budgets

with items starti ng around$10 and going up to $200. Asshe hopes to make the trucka year-round business, Longsays she’ll eventually add

even more items for men andbabies, making it a “one-stopfamily gift shop.”

The truck is just one of

many new aspects of Long’slife. The new mom to a now3-year-old son, moved tofrom Park Slope to RockawayPark last summer with herhusband, who is a firefighter.She is no stranger to the fash-ion industry as she graduat-ed from the Pratt Institute forFashion Design and workedon the editorial side of fash-ion for magazines such as In-Style and W magazine, whereshe assisted a stylist for abou tfive years. After getting mar-ried and becoming pregnant

wit h her first son, Henry,Long left the fashion world,but is now jumping back in

wit h her first bus iness, wit hthe help of her friend, LizStamplis. “This is my first big

When asked about musical in-spirations I was not surprised, it

was a typical NYC Kid mixed bagof grunge, classic rock, hip hop,punk etc. Most grew up listening

to whatever was around them, which is what makes the NY musicscene so special and why it needsto be supported from the groundup. But with fewer opportunitiesfor minors to gather together andsee live bands, especially with ourgeographical isolation, what canbe done to foster Rockaway’s as-piring musical youth? Te goodnews is that with our boardwalkbeing rebuilt, the continuing suc-cess of Riis Bazaar where MaxPower’s free concert series “Rock!

Away!” Will be held on Turs-day nights, and festivals such asRockstock and Barrels- kids of allages will have opportunities tohear more live music right here athome than in summers past. Tequestions beg of how to continuethis here in the off -season.

Tom Jodice of Arson Welles andRockaWaves Radio were happy to

chime in. Broadcasting onlinefrom Whit’s End, RockawavesRadio showcases local bandsand covers the music scenehere in Rockaway. It’s yet onemore way to have everyone feelincluded, which could easilybe a stepping stone to otherprojects reaching more youthin the community. While thispanel discussion went intomuch depth, and has contin-ued on since then with the re-maining members who couldnot be present that night, I can

only touch upon some of theideas discussed but I am hap-py to say that there is a realenergy being expressed aboutgetting more Rockaway kidsinvolved and playing. I lookforward to more of these ideasbeing eshed out in the com-ing weeks, and sincerely hope

but she knew a brick and mortarstore would be a huge under-taking for starters. “Te thoughtof having all the overhead ofa storefront made me anxie-ty-ridden, but then my friend,Kathy suggested a fashion truck.I thought that was a genius ideaand when researching I foundthat there’s a whole associationof mobile retailers. It made merealize that I could do some-thing like this,” Long said. Longeven turned to Beth Waytowichand Tara McKiernan of Rocka-

venture. “Tey were so support-ive and gave me some advice onfunny things you wouldn’t eventhink about when it comes tohaving a mobile business, likeinsulating the walls and install-ing proper air conditioning.

Our stores are very diff erent,so I don’t see competition be-tween us. I think we both havethe philosophy that the moresmall businesses and shoppingoptions that come to Rockaway,the better it is for everyone.”

Long went on a hunt for theperfect truck last year andcame across an ad on Craig-slist for an old cookie truck inCarlisle, PA. “I had seen a fewother trucks but I had this gutfeeling about this truck. It was

18-feet, which is hard to comeby and it had barn doors. Iknew it was the one,” she said.Long and her husband madethe trip to Carlisle and cameback with the future home ofThe Swellife in January. Overthe course of three months,Long’s husband helped buildout the entire interior of thetruck in his free time, trans-forming it from a cookie de-livery truck to a chic boutique.“My husband has really helped

make my dreams come true,”Long said.

In addition to serving as a re-tail store, Long hopes to off erservices like personal shoppingand styling and host shoppingparties, where she’ll bring thetruck to someone for an event.She also hopes to hold interac-

tive events like temporary goldfoil tattoo and nail art days.

Long plans to makeTe Swel-life a year-round business, soafter the summer she’ll be par-ticipating in shopping eventsaround Rockaway, plus settingup at diff erent markets aroundNew York, such as the LIC FleaMarket. For the summer, thetruck will be at different loca-tions on the peninsula, fromShore Front Parkway aroundthe concessions, Beach 129thstreet and starting in July,she’ll be at the Riis Park BeachBazaar during weekends. One of our readers askedme to do an article on WineRacks, so here it is. There aremany things you can make

wine racks out of including(but not limited to) an oldnightstand, PVC pipe, recy-cled pallets, etc. We’re goingto focus on one of the easierbut still decorative designs.

For starters, you will need tothink about how many winebottles you will want on yourrack then follow the instruc-tions below.

1- You will need a piece of wood (I reco mmend Cedaror Oak). Your wood shouldbe 3.5” to 4” wide, not lessthan 1” thick and the lengthshould be 5” for every bottle

you are planning to have onit (allow an additional 8” if

you’re going to stand one up-right).

2- Drill a 1 ¼” hole on a 30to 45 degree angle every fiveinches (leaving about eightinches of space at the end fora bottle to stand upright if youchoose).

3- For longer wine racks youmay need additional support.

You can make this s upport byadding an additional piece

of wood the same length.

Pre-drilling the holes, screw your wine rack to the centerof the second piece of wood.

4- Sand your wine rack us-ing an 80-grit piece of sand-paper, then again with a 120-grit sandpaper.

5- Stain your wine rack tothe color of your choice usingMinWax Stain and Sealer.

6- Protect your wine rack bycoating it with lacquer (brushon or spray on will both workfine).

7- Hang your wine rackhorizontally (with the holespointing upward) or vertical-

ly (with the holes pointingupward and towards the un-drilled section if space wasleft for an upright bottle). Besure to anchor your wine racksecurely using butterfly an-chors (if you can’t secure intoa beam).

8- Insert your wine bottlesinto the holes (and one up-right if space was left to doso).

9- Take a photo of your new wine rack and send it to theemail address below.

Ingredients:1 package Chicken Apple Sau-sage (sliced – 4 links)2 ½ cups Sweet potatoes(quartered)½ cup Frozen Spinach (coarse-ly chopped)2 teaspoons cinnamon pow-der1 teaspoon garlic powder1 tablespoon honey 1 tablespoons butter (diced)

On May 12, 2015, Rockawayresident Justin Zemser, a mid-

shipman from the U.S. Naval Academy, was among thosekilled in the Amtrak train de-railment. He was 20. The lossof this scholar, athlete andoverall good man was tre-mendous to the Channel ViewSchool for Research com-munity, where Zemser, akaZ-Man, had attended. Now,CVSR is honoring the youngman with an event that exem-plifies much of what he loved.

On Saturday, June 4 at12 p.m., the community is

welcome to attend the firstZ-Man Memorial FootballTournament at the CVSRfield (100-00 Beach ChannelDrive). About 10 teams, madeup of Channel View students,alumni and those who playedfor the Beach Channel Cam-pus Football Team, will par-ticipate in this flag footballtournament to honor Zems-er, who had played football atChannel View and the Naval

Academy. “Justin was the type

of kid who really represent-ed what Channel View is allabout. He was very commu-nity oriented and went aboveand beyond to help others. Heplayed football for Channel

View and developed long last-ing friendships here. Beingthat he loved sports, especial-ly football, some of the kidsthought it would best repre-sent him by having a footballgame in his honor,” CVSR’sCommunity Associate, Lau-ren O’Connor said.

O’Connor, Zemzer’s for-mer teachers including his-tory teacher Rob Engelbert,English teacher Mike Kenne-dy, and other staff membershave helped to organize Sat-urday’s event which will in-clude a DJ, performances bythe CVSR dance team, a con-cession stand, a rock paintingstation set up by Zemser’s fa-ther, a 50/50, raffles, a dona-tion booth and event t-shirtsfor sale.
