also gaining importance as it helps in studying the movement of rock mass and provides timely warning to take appropriate action.

Both design and construction engineers would always be keen to know what advancements are taking place in their respective fields. Therefore, there is a need for up gradation of ones knowledge.

Liberalisation of economy has facilitated planning and execution of many exciting and complicated projects in India. These projects require application of modern principles of rock mechanics, which warrants deliberations and collaboration to facilitate flow of appropriate technology to enable successful implementation of such projects under a time-bound programme in a cost-effective manner, conforming to environmental requirements.

To deliberate on the advances in rock engineering, the Indian National Group of ISRM and the Central Board of Irrigation & Power (CBIP) are organizing two days’ International Symposium “Rock India 2014 - Present Technology and Future Challenges” and a Workshop on “Open Pit Mining”.

ABOUT THE ORGANISERSThe Central Board of Irrigation and Power (CBIP), since its inception in 1927, is engaged in the dissemination of information regarding recent technological advancements in the disciplines of water resources, dam engineering, tunnels and underground works, rock mechanics, geosynthetics, power and renewable energy. Besides, it provides a forum for exchange of experiences, facilitating flow of technology through the organisation of symposia, seminars, workshops, training courses, both at national as well international levels, in liaison with international organisations. The CBIP acts as Secretariat of the Indian Chapter as well as Indian National Group of many international organisations like International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM), International Water Resources Association (IWRA), International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD), International Geosynthetics Society (IGS), International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA), World Water Council, etc.Indian National Group of International Society for Rock Mechanics (ING-ISRM) has been involved in dissemination of information on rock mechanics, mining, rock slope stability and tunnel engineering by organising symposia, seminars, workshops, and training courses, both at national as well as international level, in liaison with international organizations, since its inception in 1991. The Secretariat of ISRM is in Lisbon (Portugal). ISRM has 54 countries as its National Groups, with India being one of them.

SYMPOSIUM SUB-THEMES1. Advancements in Testing and Characterisation of Rocks

and Rock Masses2. Modelling and Analysis of Rock Structures3. Preservation and Restoration of Ancient Rock

Monuments

INVITATIONConsiderable activities in India in the field of rock mechanics are in progress, mainly due to the execution of projects for irrigation, flood control and hydro power generation, building of roads in mountainous areas, sub-surface excavations for under-ground railway, storage and mining purposes, etc. Construction of dams, tunnels, underground works, open pit mining, deep underground mining, stability of rockmass often encounter the problems associated with unfavourable geological conditions. How these problems have been dealt successfully is what we should all share. The experience gained during construction of these works will help in understanding the mechanism or rock support interaction, thus advancing the frontiers of rock mechanics. Keeping this in mind Indian National Group of ISRM and Central Board of Irrigation and Power (CBIP) are jointly organizing an International Symposium “Rock India 2014 - Present Technology and Future Challenges” and Pre-Symposium Workshop on “Open Pit Mining”.On behalf of the organisers, I extend a cordial invitation to participate in the Symposium. It is hoped that the deliberations at the symposium will help in formulating appropriate measures needed for successful execution of projects whether they relate to mining or tunnelling, underground cavern or metro. The Indian National Group of ISRM and the Organising Committee of the Symposium will endeavour to provide you an enjoyable stay and exciting experience.Looking forward to meet you in the Symposium in New Delhi.V.K. INTRODUCTIONThe study of rock mechanics has assumed considerable importance because of its wide application in civil engineering, more predominantly in water resources, mining engineering and underground structures. For the execution of multipurpose water resources projects located in complicated geological settings, the significance of rock mechanics in the design and construction was realised in late 1950s. Despite tremendous alround advancement in technology, a full understanding of natural forces and phenomena eludes the design engineer. The challenges encountered during construction of water resources projects in adverse geological conditions and the methodology/approach followed to reduce them have lot of significance to construction and design engineers. Similar experiences gained during the design and construction of road tunnels, metro tunnels, and rail tunnels in complicated conditions along with stability of slopes will also be very useful. Mining is another field where besides open pit mining, deep seated ore mining is also providing challenges to engineers. Besides providing support, instrumentation is
