Where is RocinhaRocinha, also know as little farm,is the largest favela in Brazil. It is located in Rio de Janeiro's South Zone between the São Conrado and Gávea. Built on a hillside, Rochinha is over looking Rio de Janeiro. favela is on a very steep hill, with many trees surrounding it.

Rocinha

A History of RocinhaNo one knows where and when the name Rocinha emerged, it probably came in the 1920s there was a famous market which is now the Santos Dumont Plaza in Gávea. The middle class bought their fresh produce there and would ask the sellers where the produce came from and they would answer that they came from their ‘little farm’ or Rocinha.

What are the opportunities of living in Rocinha?

Compared to the traditional idea of a favela. Rocinha has much more, including, T.V, electricity and basic sanitation needs. And rather than the homes being built from sticks materials come at hand, Rocinha is made from concrete and bricks. however the homicide rates have dropped since 2005 and in 2012 it was recorded 24 homicides per 100,000. But this has changed since theannouncement that Brazil would be holding the 2014 World Cup, as these rates have rised to 38.1% more than the previous year.

What are the challenges of living in Rocinha

The community has a population estimated at anywhere between 100 thousand and 200 thousand, crammed into a steep and rugged landscape of only 0.80 square miles. Within this highly dense community the majority of residents live in poverty, living in small houses on top of each other, sometimes as many as tall as 7, 8, 9, and even 11 stories tall.

The affect the world cup had on rocinha

I think that the world cup 201 has brung lots of tourism to rio as the stadiums are now open to visit and would be a very good site to see. It has also made the residence happier as they have a better life to live with the economy being higher, also they got to meet some of the famous footballers that played in the world cup.
