Around 500 years after its foundation, Silla embraced Buddihism, giving
rise to a splendid flowering of Buddhist art and culture. In the late 7th
century, King Munmu unified the people of the Korean peninsulaand its three kingdoms, and the population of Gyeongju, the capital ofSilla, reached over a million people.
As the capital of Silla for a thousand years, Gyeongju is still alive with
the artistic and ancestral spirit of the dynasty.
It has a wonderful natural landscape, and the cultural heritage which
gave rise to Silla's artistic passions and treasures is still alive and present.
One can feel the very breath of Silla in Gyeongju.
There are also natural joys to be found in the surrounding area. There
are mountains and recreational forests, and also five beaches to enjoy along
the beautiful East Sea coastline. Streetlamps line the long riverside downtown,
and in and around the public stadium, space has been provided for people
to enjoy different sports and sporting events.
The cultural heritage, long history and natural beauty of Gyeongju make it
both a world-class tourist destination and a desirable place to live.
