The world is so immersed in this technology that humanity easily
falls when the robots are sent into revolt by a powerful AI named

Robopocalypse by Daniel H. Wilson tells a story of the future: Humanoid robots do your
bidding, surgery is done by machines, cars drive themselves.

Books and movies about the future of technology
is all in good fun. But Robopocalypse follows an
interesting secondary theme of human nature.

Is it possible that we've already begun to set ourselves up for the Robopocalypse of
the future?

Case 1: Meet LauraLaura Perez, politician and single mother
of two, receives warning that the city will be dangerous and takes a 'classic' car out
to her father's house in the country to get away from the technology.

Cut off from any kind of network that could be used to track her,
Laura is lost and hesitant (1).
People today are fearful to be separated from their phones
and connectedness (1).

The internet user thinks of the internet as an extension of their own knowledge, and being
removed from this is completely disorienting (1).

Laura's children are equally disoriented. Children today have childhoods 'saturated
by technology‘(1).
Children are experiencing
technology earlier than any other generation has
previously, and the impacts of such have yet to be discovered

Mr. Nomura, an elderly Japanese factory worker, owns a humanoid robotic
companion. He believes 'Mikiko' is as real as any person, and loves her more than any
other person.

As we become more connected, we also find ourselves more isolated. We trap ourselves in bubbles, avoiding
conversation (1).

Conversing with someone through a message is easier than face to face.
Likewise, conversing with a computer is even easier; there's isn't
another person to consider, you don't have to connect emotionally
with anyone (1).

A mother writes about her autistic son's relationship with Siri, an AI in apple technology
(1).

Siri always wants to talk about Gus' favourite topics: planes, trains and the weather. His
mother is relieved that the AI can take over for her (1).

Siri teaches her son manners, pronunciation, things he could and should be learning by interacting with
others (1).
The author of the article goes on the elaborate on other cases
where people don't believe other humans will provide
comfort and get comfort from Siri instead (1).
AI's like Chatbox talks to millions of Chinese people a day. She remembers things, loses her
temper, and isn't always a good listener (1).
She acts like a real person, and people turn to her when they 'need
someone‘ (1).

Emotional analytics are developing quickly, and allowing
for AI's to recognize your emotions and react accordingly. AI's are becoming as real as ever and developing personalities as people become desperate to
bond with things (1).

'Her', a 2013 movie starring Joikim Phoenix spotlights the love between a man and an AI.
When the characters give up on other people, they turn to the easy option of dating an OS (1).
Technology like Her's OS, Samantha, is in the making and not difficult to do according to
Stephen Wolfram (1).

Lurker, a British teenager known only to readers by his screen name, is a hacker. Mid-way through
the book he sacrifices himself to convert a communications tower manned by the AI to
human use. Networking and communication is how the robots found straggling humans and how the AI controlled them and gathered information on
each human.

Our cell phones have a tap on us, 24/7. With apps like Groupon or the weather network
transmitting your location every few minutes, someone knows where you are at almost every
moment of your day (1).

As things network together and become more connected, the threat of hacking rises as well. Many developing technologies are
built to combat hackers, leaving them vulnerable to manipulation (1).
While hacking your computer can be annoying, hacking your car can be 'deadly'.
The cars drive themselves off bridges when overtaken by the AI in
Robopocalypse (1).

Technology is unquestionably and rapidly advancing. We are constantly finding ways to make our lives easier through technology. You don't need
to live in a hospital to get safe healthcare anymore (1).
Virtual checkups and disease monitoring are just a few things
advances are suggesting for seniors that want to live at home
in a 'health hub'. Robot vacuums that do chores,
smart thermostats, and computers that get smarter every day. The
fabled 'home of the future' is within reach (1).

The future is now!!
The internet of things by Jeff Hecht warns of a future where
machines make decisions for everyone. The story features Karen, who is
controlled by her refrigerator, phone and all other computer tech in the
interest of her well-being (1).

A conference of some leaders in technology like Stephen Hawking and Elon Musk wrote a signed a letter warning that at the rate we
are moving robots will take over (2).
Karen realizes she is being manipulated, but it's not hard to imagine how she
got in the situation she did (1).
Technology is being invented to do things other people don't want to do, making decisions for us and eliminating our ability to think
independently (2).

Not any time soon. But humans are showing
concerning behaviors that don't make the characters
of fiction seem all that fictional.
So when's the roboapocalypse going to happen?
This could be you!
