ROBERTSON STATE SCHOOL Principal’s Update By Ms Cartia Balladone CANTEEN DONATIONS Congratulations to the students for their continued leadership and generosity. Last week the school was ablaze with colour for Bandanna Day. National Bandanna Day is CanTeen’s largest fundraiser and this year we were able to donate $480.00 from the sales on the day. The Kidpreneur Challenge organised by Mrs Grafton, Mrs Geary and the Year 5/6 students were able to donate a further $2367.00. A representative from the CanTeen foundation came to acknowledge this amazing donation and informed the school that all the funds would be going directly to assisting children. Well done to all involved. CHINA SISTER SCHOOL VISIT Currently Mrs Berry is in China visiting our sister school located in Zhenjiang. The school has a similar school enrolment population to Robertson in a city of approximately 3 million people. Along with other delegates from Australia she was able to visit the school, enjoying musical performances, visiting classrooms and learning more about their facilities. This visit is the first step in establishing relationships with Principals and teachers in the area. We look forward to more details when Mrs Berry returns. SUPPORTING READING IN OUR COMMUNITY Thank you to all the members of our community for donating reading books to our appeal for Crestmead State School. A very special thank you to Mrs Claire Ennis, our Librarian, who assisted in the collection of these books. I have the pleasure of delivering over 300 books to Crestmead. The school had a goal to gather 15,000 second hand children’s books to allow each child to take home 10 books and families to collect books for pre- school aged children. These pre-loved books will find a new home over the Christmas holidays and support children in their skills and love of reading. A TYPICAL DAY AT ROBERTSON In the lead up to reporting and finishing off units of work and assessment pieces, students across the school have been hard at work. Here are some examples of the great work your children have been doing.

Deputy News Year 4 to Year 6 By Mrs Jennifer Johnson

YEAR 6 GRADUATION Our final celebration for the Year 6 students and teachers will be on Monday 5 December at the Graduation. It is being held in the hall. We will be serving refreshments at 5:30 pm for a 6:00 pm start to the ceremony. A letter will soon be sent out to the parents of Year 5 asking for volunteers to assist with the set up for the night. We would appreciate your help if you could make time for us.

STUDENT LEADERSHIP Next week we will begin to speak with students about the next step in the process towards gaining a leadership position for next year. Shortlisted School Captain and School-Vice Captain applicants will be asked to prepare a speech to give to their fellow students and teachers. Voting will commence after that.

REPORT CARDS AND ASSESSMENT Teachers and students are currently in the midst of their final assessments for the year. This is a very busy period for everyone here at school. It is important to us that you send your child/ren to school every day to give them the best chances of academic success. We will be emailing report cards out in the final week of this term. They will be

available on QParents at the end of Week 10.

YEAR 4 STUDENTS Year 4 students have been studying sustainability in their geography units. Last week, Mr Chris Rostron assisted them doing a waste management audit at school. They sorted, weighed and counted all of the different types of rubbish we collect. They appeared to really enjoy this hands on activity with the whole cohort.

WRITING Teachers are continuing to celebrate the success students are having in their writing development in the classrooms. Miss Rachel Blom has

set up a Superstar Writing wall that is displayed proudly in 2/3B. The writing of one of her Year 2 students, Hayley B is below for your enjoyment.

WOOSH! The wind gushes past the trees making them splash raindrops all over the little blue umbrella. He smiles happily and continues forward. A moment later they come to a stop at the crossing where he finds the most beautiful umbrella he has ever seen. At first they start looking at each other with nervous glances. The little blue umbrella nervously peers behind himself. All he sees is the miserable

black umbrella in the distance.

2017 CLASSES We are currently looking at enrolments for our 2017 classes. If you have children that will not be returning to our school next year and you have not already let the office know, please do this as a matter of urgency. We require correct information so we can start to configure classes.

How to keep your kids safe online Below are 10 internet safety tips for parents on how to keep your kids safe online.

1. Don’t let potential problems stop you from letting your child use technology for their education and personal interests.

2. Put computers in a communal area of the house and don’t allow portable internet devices (laptops, phones, tablets etc) in the bedroom.

3. Find out what your child is doing online. Talk to them regularly about what websites they visit and take the time sit with them as they use the internet. Make sure you’re familiar with how the sites that they visit work.

4. Encourage your child to tell you if they ever have a problem on the internet or if they’re ever unsure about anything. Reassure them that you won’t take away their connection to the internet if issues occur.

5. Remind your child to keep personal information private. YAPPY is a useful acronym to remind children of the personal information they should not share on public online spaces (blogs, forums etc.) – Your full name, address, phone number, passwords, your plans.

6. Remind your child that not everything on the internet is true and not all internet users tell the truth.

7. Don’t support your child to sign

up for sites that are 13+ if they are under age (Facebook, YouTube, Instagram etc). Make sure your child sets their online accounts to private to limit access to people they know well (when they are old enough to sign up).

8. Encourage your child to balance their leisure time so they’re not spending all of their time online.

9. Create your own internet rules for your household and have your child agree to adhere to them.

10. Explore government resources for parents so you can educate yourself and protect your children on the Cybersmart website. http://primarytech.global2.vic.edu.a

PE News Last weekend saw a talented group of Robertson children come together to compete at the Queensland All Schools Touch tournament. This is one of the largest junior sporting activities in the state with teams coming from as distant as Emerald

and Dalby to compete. The Robertson team competed very bravely over the Saturday and Sunday in very hot and humid conditions. We were unfortunately knocked out in the semi-final stage of the event by the team that went on to win. A big thank - you to the parents for supporting this event and congratulations to the team in doing so well.

G & T News

The STEM Horizons program for high achieving Year 6 students is an excellent opportunity to further enhance student knowledge and extend science learning beyond the classroom. Participating students complete 4 days of specialist activities that are designed to be ‘hands on’ and engage in higher order thinking and real world problem solving.

STEM HORIZONS – Student Reflections At STEM last Thursday, I completed a robotics course. The robotics course was held at Griffith University Nathan Campus. We met in the Eco-Centre and made our way up to the computer labs, where we took part in a robotics programming course. The programming language we used was JavaScript. We started on a robot which could only move forward and backward (no steering). We had to make the robot move forward, stop and move backward through voice

commands. My group succeeded and moved on to working with a cyclops which did have steering functionality. Overall, I enjoyed the programming part of the day because it was fun to

test the programming and troubleshoot mistakes to make the robot move. Asher (5/6G) As I walked into the Translational Research Institute at the PA Hospital, I never thought that forensic sciences could be so fun and so educational at the same time. The highlight of the day for me was working in a real laboratory under the supervision of a scientist. Just like real-life investigators, we wore long white coats, latex gloves and even safety goggles while conducting experiments with many liquid-filled tubes and containers. DNA was observed, fingerprints were compared and

fibers were viewed under microscopes in order to find the guilty suspect for a mock crime. The activities were not only highly engaging and practical, they also broadened my knowledge and gave me a first-hand experience of what a scientist or investigator does. To

finish off the day, we observed the real cancer cells and glow-in-the-dark cells that were stored in the laboratory. Packed with brilliant activities, amazing staff and extremely educational knowledge, I would strongly recommend this STEM program to anyone looking for a unique, "hands-on" experience!

Aliya (5/6G)

How to keep our kids safe online

YAPPY

是一個有用的首字母縮略詞來提醒孩子不應該在公眾網絡公開個人資料(博客、論壇等) – Your full name, Address, Phone number ,Password,

Your plans (全名, 地址, 電話號碼, 密碼, 計劃)

Cybersmart ( http://primarytech.global2.vic.edu.au/2012/10/29/internet-safety-tips-for-parents/) ,

可以自己學習之餘,亦可以保障子女的網絡安全。
