Master Thesis Project

2010 - Rydboholm

My Master Thesis project took place in the former company town of Rydboholm, outside the city of Borås. At that moment Rydboholm was an area under development and the municipality was working on the master plan which would decide the future of the village. In 1987 the area of Rydboholm was listed by Riksantikvarieämbetet as one of the few industrial areas of national interest, which was another factor to consider. In our opinion the qualities of this area made it more suitable for housing and might actually be lost if instead the buildings were altered to fit the industrial requirements of today. Therefore we suggested a new general plan hypothesizing a densification of the area in a residential sense. Our main focus was a garage built in the 1920's, for which we proposed six apartments of three different layouts based on open plan solutions with living rooms extending towards private gardens.

Tomaskyrkan

2008 - Göteborg

During this project we dealt with the transformation of a church-daycare complex in Hammarkullen, a suburban area of Göteborg. The building, being built during the '70s, was young enough to require no restoration intervention, but yet needed a reorganization of the inner and outer spaces, accompanied by the addition of new elements.Since the church is part of a network in the area, we also had to briefly write a program about how this church would be inserted in such a network. In order to do so, part of our task was to interview the users of the building in order to suggest a proposal which would justify and even enhance such a role.In details, our intervention included a new main entrance, a new dining room and the rearrangement of bathrooms, kitchens, chapel, playroom and outer playground.

This is the task that more than the others can be recorded under the name of "conservation" in a narrow sense. The object of our intervention was a Renaissance residential palace placed in the historical centre of the city of Como, northern Italy. Our task was to draw up a preservation plan for the building. During the early stages of the project we have been occupied with a deep research in the municipal archives looking for documents attesting the history of the palace. Afterwards we focused our efforts on measuring and redrawing the building, which had to be done with extreme accuracy since the drawings were to be used for the preservation plan. The main part of the exercise was to analyze drawings and photographs in order to identify the different decay phenomena and therefore suggest the suitable interventions for such decays.

Casa del Fotografo

2005 - Milano

The aim of this project was to design an atelier-house for a photographer in a former industrial building in Milano. As shown in the section, the apartment develops on two floors following a L-shape. The main element of the design is the steel structure running along the double-height wall which accommodates some of the installations of the apartment, an exposition space and the inner staircase. The purpose-built apartment develops on the second floor and is linked to the "scaffold" through two footbridges: one open air which connects to the entrance, and the other one, closed by wooden panels, which serves also as visual separator between the bedroom area and the rest of the flat. For this project we were not allowed to use any computer software, therefore here are presented few scanned hand-made technical drawings and a photograph of the physical model.

Inte Lagom

2008 - Göteborg

The aim of this project was to design an office-library complex in the area called Gamle Stan, in Göteborg. The site presents an existing C-shape building next to the project lot, a feature that cannot be ignored but, on the other hand, not so strong to exert a real influence to the new building.According to that, the designed building is made by two sticks that continue the arms of the C-shape building, but using different lenghts and highs following the functions that they will receive. The building is thought as a representative office of a big company, that needs an elegant edifice with a strong character. The chosen material for the facades is ardesia, which has the feature to answer to these needs. The facades of the main blocks express their different behaviours: the office building is “open” to the high-traffic street Artillerigatan, but the library, needing to be more quiet, is introverse towards the square.

Università delle Alpi

2006 - Como

Aim of this project was to design an Architecture faculty in Como, northern Italy, in corrispondence of the block called Cortesella. The idea behind the project is a reinterpretation of Filarete's Ospedale Maggiore, in Milano, which nowadays hosts the Università Statale. Reflecting upon the actual destination of the Ospedale, we thought that such implant could have been suggested in an other, similar context. The projects comprises two separate blocks, linked by a bridge. The first building accommodates the residential units for the students and several open-air exposition spaces. The main building hosts the university spaces and it is so subdivided: at the ground floor cafè, computer room and bookshop; at the first and second floor all the lecture rooms; at the third floor library and departments.
