Managing all inbound and outbound logistics with regards to the manufacturing of flat plate solar collectors, Evacuated tube manifolds collectors and low pressure geysers.Negotiating wage and working conditions for a unionized staff of 75-80 people ranging from general workers, qualified toolmakers and electricians to a production manager as well as providing in service training on the manufacturing process and health and safety in a manufacturing environment. Achieving daily targets by minimizing down time and ensuring a constant flow of raw materials, regular scheduling of services on machinery and equipment and maintaining proper housekeeping. Implementing a strict QC process to minimize come-backs and failures in the field.Ensuring that the final product is packaged in the most cost effective manner without increasing the risk of damage during transport. All our products carried the SABS mark of approval manufactured in an ISO9001 facility.

Warehousing:Stock to the value of R34m received from our manufacturing plant, local suppliers and international suppliers were warehoused and distributed to 42 national franchises and projects. FIFO, regular stock takes and implementing strict policies and procedures ensured we had minimal losses and no redundant stock. Ordering transport and implementing JIT procedures ensured that up to 600 complete solar geysers were delivered to housing development projects and government projects on a monthly basis. Staff included 10 Packers, 8 ladies who manufactured copper pipe loops and plumbing kits to streamline installations and maximize roll outs as well as a receiving clerk, dispatch clerk and a warehouse manager. My personal biggest achievement was to negotiate a consignment agreement with our German suppliers that reduced our stock holding from R58m down to R34m. This increased our cash flow and enabled us to increase production capacity as well.

Procurement:We had to ensure that timely orders were placed to reduce the possibility of stock outs and buy outs thus increasing profitability. Building great relationships with different links in our supply chain ensured that we had commitment to extra ordinary service from our suppliers.Identifying local and international suppliers for raw materials, chemicals and renewable energy components formed part of my responsibilities and our monthly purchases ranged from R200k to R15m per month. All purchasing functions were performed between myself and the procurement officer, except for purchases exceeding R1m where the MD needed to authorize.

General operations:I was responsible to manage general day to day operations ensuring that all my policies and procedures were understood, implemented and controlled. Manage a small fleet of vehicles, ensuring that fuel purchases are in line with vehicle consumption, vehicles are serviced etc. I had to ensure that stalls were erected and broken down at festivals en Expos nationally. National maintenance managers had to be trained and supplied with stock which had to be controlled to minimize theft and losses. I was also responsible for all the stock at the franchises and quarterly audits were done to ensure accuracy and confirm sustainability of our processes.
