Daniel Craig returns as James Bond 007 in this, the 23rd instalment of the Bond series. It is the most critically acclaimed yet, with Craig adding more psychological depth to his character. Don’t worry though, the action is still spectacular and comes thick and fast. Judi Dench reprises her role as M, rising star Ben Whishaw is Q and Javier Bardem makes for one of the most chilling villains in the series.

12A Contains moderate action violence and one use of strong language

TabuMon 19 (6.30 ) NovemberMiguel Gomes | Portugal | 2012 | 118mins | 15 | Portuguese with English subtitles

An intriguing, enigmatic film from Portuguese director Miguel Gomes. The film is in two parts. In one, three women, neighbours in a Lisbon apartment complex, respond in different ways to the loneliness of their existence. One of them has a dark secret in her past, which gradually unfolds in the second part, a blissful, poignant flashback that casts an ironic light on the lost paradise that the characters are in search of.

Killing Them SoftlyFri 23 & Sat 24 (8.00) NovemberAndrew Dominik | USA | 2012 | 97mins | 18

A classy American crime thriller the kind of which Hollywood did so well in the 70s. ‘Killing Them Softly’ stars Brad Pitt as a hitman hired to track down and kill the perpetrators of a poker game heist. This film is a dark and powerful look at violence in contemporary America.

About EllyMon 26 (6.30 ) NovemberAsghar Farhadi | Iran | 2009 | 119mins | 12A | Persian with English subtitles

Three families holiday together at a remote and run-down cabin, taking with them a young woman, Elly. When she disappears, concern soon turns to recrimination as the fabric of these familes’ worlds is torn apart. ‘About Elly’ is a complex moral tale whose Hitchcockian elements make for compelling cinema. It is directed by Asghar Farhadi, a great talent in Iranian cinema, whose latest film ‘A Separation’ has been a worldwide hit.

The ImposterTue 27 (8.00) NovemberBart Layton | GB | 2011 | 98mins | 15

A documentary about a young French con artist who convinces a grieving Texas family that he is their 16 year old son who had been missing for 3 years, despite his French accent and different coloured eyes. This film has testimony from both the con-artist and the family as the film-makers try to piece together how the deception occurred. A gripping thriller straight out of real life, ‘The Imposter’ is an original film experience that walks the razor’s edge between true-crime documentary and stylish noir mystery.

Shorts for Wee OnesWed 28 (10.00) November45mins / Suitable for ages 3+

A brilliant mix of the best short films for the very young. All the films are either in English or have no dialogue, so they’re suitable for even the youngest children: they’re an ideal introduction to the big screen experience.

Shorts for Middle OnesThu 29 (10.00) November45mins / Suitable for ages 8+

Here’s a collection of shorts offering just a little bit more of a challenge than Wee Ones, designed to fascinate those aged 8 and above. Though several of the films are dialogue free and most of the others are in English, we haven’t ruled out films with subtitles. You’ll discover the story of an orange that wants to be a pineapple; a cautionary tale about the hole in the ozone layer; a romantic hymn to the importance of recycling, and a real-life sports tale that reminds us that winning isn’t everything.

Tickets £3.50, accompanying adults free.

There are workshops to accompany Shorts For Wee Ones and Middle Ones. Spaces limited so please book.

Workshops will take place at 11am.

The Snows of KilimanjaroWed 28 & Thur 29 (7.30) NovemberRobert Guédiguian | France | 2011 | 90mins | 15 | French with English subtitles

Political storytelling at its most entertaining. This film centres on the lives of factory workers in a working-class district of Marseille. Union rep Michel is made redundant and hopes to set off on a holiday of a lifetime to Tanzania with his wife Marie-Claire. However a shocking incident scuppers their plans and they get drawn into a tale of conflicted morals. This is an ultimately hopeful film, brimming with passion, humanity and political conviction.

The Gruffalo’s Child Friday 30 November (10.00)50 min / Suitable for ages 3+

The wonderful thing about great books is that they can be made into great films too! Once again we venture into the deep, dark wood and encounter Snake, Owl and Fox, who are on their way to a showdown with Mouse. But is he as big and bad as everyone says? We also include two more short films that complement the themes of the Gruffalo’s Child, and provide fresh perspective on the well-loved Gruffalo tales.

Family workshop also availableGet busy using your imagination and our materials to design and create a piece of art.

Spaces limited so please book.

Workshops will take place at 11am.

Beasts of the Southern WildTue 4 (8.00) DecemberBenh Zeitlin | USA | 2012 | 93mins | 12A

In a forgotten but defiant bayou community cut off from the rest of the world by a sprawling levee, a six-year-old girl exists on the brink of orphanhood. Buoyed by her childish optimism and extraordinary imagination, she believes that the natural world is in balance with the universe until a fierce storm changes her reality. Desperate to repair the structure of her world in order to save her ailing father and sinking home, this tiny hero must learn to survive unstoppable catastrophes of epic proportions. This is the indie hit of the year, a magical American folktale with a heart of gold.

12A Contains moderate threat, injury detail and potentially dangerous behaviour.

Ginger and RosaFri 30 November & Sat 1 (7.30) DecemberSally Potter | GB | 2012 | 90mins | 12A

An autobiographical film by British director Sally Potter. Set in London in 1962 it is the tale of two best friends caught up in their own emotional turmoil, as well as the political turmoil of the time. This film expertly captures the period of early sixties London, a time of optimism and change but also a time of fear as the Cuban Missile Crisis loomed. It’s a delicate and intelligent drama with standout performances from newcomers Elle Fanning and Alice Englert.

12A Contains infrequent strong language and moderate sex and suicide references

Tormented by the Stasi, she dreams of escape to the West but finds herself being drawn inexorably, disastrously into a relationship with a fellow doctor. UntouchableWed 5 (7.30) & Thur 6 (10.45 & 7.30) DecemberOlivier Nakache, Eric Tolodano | France | 2011 | 112mins | 15 | French with English subtitles

The surprise feelgood hit of the year, this French film has a classic odd couple set up as a millionaire who becomes paralysed after a paragliding accident hires an ex-con as his carer. The pair who, on the surface, seem to have nothing in common, find camaraderie rooted in honesty and humour.

ArgoFri 7, Sat 8 (7.30) & Tue 11 (8.00) DecemberBen Affleck | USA | 2012 | 120mins | 15

Based on real events, ‘Argo’ chronicles the life-or-death covert operation to rescue six Americans, which unfolded behind the scenes of the Iran hostage crisis, focusing on the little-known role that the CIA and Hollywood played. Ben Affleck stars as Tony Mendez, a CIA operative who sets up the audacious plan, posing as a movie producer scouting for locations in Tehran. Affleck directs a strong cast including John Goodman, Bryan Cranston and George Clooney. This is a smart, funny and tense thriller.

Rust and BoneWed 12 & Thu 13 (7.30) DecemberJacques Audiard | France | 2012 | 120mins | 15 French with English subtitles

‘Rust and Bone’ is a beautiful, emotionally charged film that won the Best Film at the recent London Film Festival. It is the tale of two very different people coming to terms with dramatic life changes. Ali has always been a distant father, but when he must take care of his five-year-old son alone for the first time, he struggles with the responsibility. Homeless, penniless and friendless he moves from northern France to Antibes to take refuge with his sister. There he encounters Stephanie, a beautiful and talented animal trainer. She dismisses his advances, but when she is the victim of a terrible accident, Ali and Stephanie are reunited and his no-nonsense approach is life-changing.

The MasterFri 14 - Thu 20 DecemberPaul Thomas Anderson | USA | 2012 | 137mins | 15

‘The Master’, Paul Thomas Anderson’s first film since the stunning ‘There Will Be Blood’, boasts virtuoso performances from leads Joaquin Phoenix and Philip Seymour Hoffman. Freddie Sutton (Phoenix) is a troubled navy veteran, drifting through his turbulent life in post-WWII America. Lancaster Dodd (Seymour Hoffman) is a volatile and charismatic intellectual who founds his own influential religious cult. When the two men meet, they forge an intense, if unequal, bond. ‘The Master’ is a striking and powerful film which promises to be one of the most talked about films of the autumn.

The Princess BrideSun 16 (6.00) DecemberRob Reiner | USA | 1987 | 98mins | PG

Continuing our series of Sunday Staff Picks. The Princess Bride has been chosen by attendant Susan Kenny.

“Fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love... Miracles!”

-Grandfather (Peter Falk)

“This is not a random list, it is the content of this beautiful film and the reason why it is my favourite. 25 years ago most people missed the cinematic release of Rob Reiner’s film. The cult following came later and in a big way. One of the most quotable films released, this is my Staff Pick and I hope the RBCFT audience loves it as much as I do.”

Berberian Sound StudioMon 17 (6.30 ) DecemberPeter Strickland | GB | 2012 | 92mins | 15

This atmospheric film is a must see for fans of Italian giallo horror. These films were known for their mix of high style and gruesome detail, and also for their sound effects. Toby Jones plays a sound engineer on the set of one such film, using such objects as marrows and watermelons to create just the right effect. However, the appalling violence on screen and the shady goings on off set begin to seep into his life, sending him sliding into madness.

The influence of ‘The Conversation’ is key on this film – look out for this film later in the programme!

A powerful and moving film, which details the tender and loving relationship between two elderly musicians. Fri 11 & Sat 12 (7.30) JanuaryGilles Legrand | France | 2011 | 101mins | French with English subtitles

The Saint Emilion Premier Cru Chateau Clos Fourtet is the setting for this classy Gallic family drama. Grouchy character thesp Niels Arestrup (‘A Prophet’, ‘War Horse’) is ideally cast as the coldhearted, overly pragmatic owner of a prestigious vineyard who considers his son an incompetent successor. Like a fine wine, this drama is full-bodied and complex and provides a fascinating look at the matter of the transmission of knowledge, heritage and tradition in the world of wine.

Look out for a special wine tasting event on Saturday evening. Details to be confirmed.

Tune for the BloodThu 17 (7.30) JanuaryAnne Cottringer | UK | 2012 | 103mins | PG

The average age of a UK farmer is 58 years. Traditional family farms are increasingly under threat. This documentary follows six Herefordshire Young Farmers through the dramas and challenges of the farming year. Breeding the perfect dairy cow, volatile markets, the threat of TB, laying a good hedge are all part of the rich texture of this exuberant, lyrical and often gritty portrait of a new generation whose connection to the countryside and the rhythms of the seasons chimes with the ‘tune for the blood’ celebrated by the poet John Masefield.

We are delighted to welcome the local branch of the Young Farmers Club who will lead a discussion after the screening.

Members of the Young Farmers Association over the age of 16 will be eligible for a concession.

A deliciously enjoyable film for viewers with a wicked sense of humour. This pitch black comedy follows loved-up couple, Chris and Tina, as they set off on their first holiday together. Tina is desperate to escape her sheltered life with her meddling mother, and Chris can’t wait to share the delights of a caravanning holiday. But it doesn’t take long for the eccentric couple’s romantic bubble to burst, and litterbugs and irritating caravan neighbours meet a sticky end when the trip turns nasty.

The Life and Death of Colonel BlimpSun 20 (2.00) JanuaryEmeric Pressburger, Michael Powell | GB | 1943 |164 mins | U

The passions and pitfalls of a lifetime in the military are dramatized in Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger’s magnificent epic. The film follows the exploits of pristine British soldier Clive Candy (Roger Livesey) as he battles to maintain his honor and proud gentlemanly conduct through romance, three wars, and a changing world. Vibrant and controversial, ‘The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp’ is at once a romantic portrait of a career soldier and a pointed investigation into the nature of aging, friendship, and obsolescence. Arguably the greatest of all films about what it means to be British.

Chasing IceTue 22 (6.00) JanuaryJeff Orlowski | USA | 2012 | 75mins

When National Geographic photographer James Balog asked, “How can one take a picture of climate change?” his attention was immediately drawn to ice. A cover story on glaciers that became the most well-read piece in the magazine’s recent history marked the beginning of a longer project that would reach epic proportions. This breathtakingly beautiful documentary follows the indomitable photographer as he brings to life the Extreme Ice Survey —a massive photography project that placed 30 cameras across three continents to gather visual evidence of the earth’s melting ice.
