ROALD AMUNDSEN

HIS LIFE Roald Amundsen was born to a family of ship owners and captains. Roald Amundsen was born on July 16, 1872 in Borge

Ostfold,Norway. He was a Norwegian explorer. His parents are Jens Amundsen and Hanna Sahlqvist. Amundsen is known for his first expedition to the North and South

pole. As a kid, Roald Amundsen love John Franklin and amazed by his

travels. When Roald was little his mom wanted him to be a doctor, but

Amundsen wanted to be an explorer and travel.Roald Amundsen’s dad died when he was 14 years old and his

mom died when he was 21 years old. When his mom died, Roald Amundsen broke his promise and

dropped out of medical school to prepare for his first trip to the arctic.

Quickly Roald Amundsen devoted his life to training and keeping his body fit for his first exploration.

Explorations• Roald Amundsen reached his goal that has been dreams of many men.• Roald Amundsen has been on 4 explorations, they are to the Northwest Passage,

Northeast Passage, North Pole and the South Pole.• Roald traveled to the Northwest Passage using a ship called the Gjoa.• He went on this exploration in 1903.• First Amundsen wanted to got to the North Pole, But somebody already arrived there

first so he secretly switched plans and went to the South Pole.• Roald Amundsen traveled to the North Pole using a blimp, which people considered

not safe.• On 1918, Roald Amundsen traveled to the Northeast Passage using a ship called the

Maud.• Roald had planned to freeze the ship when it was traveling, but unfortunately the

polar ice was too thick that the whole ship froze and couldn’t be free.• Luckily Amundsen and his crew was saved and Roald Amundsen was able to go back

to Norway.

THE END OF A GREAT EXPLORERRoald Amundsen disappeared on June 18,1928 in Bear

Island when he was on a rescue mission to save his friend Umberto Nobile who was lost in the arctic.

It was in the time of summer.He had traveled with a French flight crew, but their body

wasn’t found either.When he disappeared he was 55 years old.He went to save him on a rescue plane, but the plane

crashed.People think that Roald Amundsen died in the crash or a few

minutes after.His body was never found.Nobile was still found by another search crew and saved.The plane that Amundsen flew in was built by his friend

Umberto Nobile.
