Greece Mainland A country full of beautiful

surprises !Greece is a country teeming with myths, traditions, history and living culture. Travellers choose it as a destination not only for its incomparable natural beauty, but because it is a magical place, full of discoveries, charm and secrets. Travelling in Greece is at the same time a way of becoming acquainted with the origins of western civilisation. Let yourself be captivated by its historical wealth and singular modern reality. A trip to Greece is the experience of a lifetime that leaves the pleasant feeling that the world is ultimately very rich, very beautiful and very interesting. !Archeological Sites Many cultures have come and gone, and left relatively little for us to know them by. But there are a couple of reasons why we know so much about the Greeks. First, they built monuments in stone. Huge temples and agoras, or market places appeared wherever they settled. They decorated the buildings with scenes of daily life, warfare and sea battles. They buried their dead in graveyards, and the headstones are some of the most poignant sculptures ever made. Second, the Greeks were greatly admired by the Romans, who helped preserve greek drama and other writings. The plays of Euripides, Aeschylus and Sophocles are still performed today. So whatever your reason for going to the lands once inhabited by the ancient Greeks, there's plenty to see and discover. !Sun, Sea and Nature From April until October Greece enjoys summer and invites you to enjoy it too, with all your senses. Swimming in crystalline seas, endless hours of relaxation on exotic beaches and secret coves. Walking through

archaeological sites and paths that gaze out at the sea, tavernas on the waterfront, gorges with spring water, green paths and amazing nature all over it. Greece welcomes everyone! !The blue sea, the exotic beaches, the bright Aegean light, the hospitable locals, the unique architecture and the culture make Greece an ideal holiday location. It’s a country drenched in sunlight, living by the sea year round! !!!!!!!!

Day 1 - Arrival to Igoumenitsa and driving to Ioannina City - 80km

• Visit the Vrellis' museum

The Pavlos Vrellis Greek History Museum also known as Pavlos Vrellis Museum of Wax Effigies is a privately owned wax museum in Ioannina regional unit, Greece. It was set up by the sculptor Pavlos Vrellis in February 1983, and is the best known wax museum in Greece. The museum hosts 150 wax models in 37 themes, inspired by various events from Greek history.

!• Visit the Castle of Ali Pashas and the city of Ioannina The Ioannina Castle is the fortified old town of the city of Ioannina in northwestern Greece. The present fortification dates largely to the reconstruction under Ali Pasha in the late Ottoman period, but incorporates also pre-existing Byzantine and ancient Greek elements. The castle is located on the southeastern corner of the modern city, on top a rocky promontory jutting into Lake Pamvotis. The castle is dominated by its two citadels, already established by the late 11th century: Alexiad, the northeastern citadel and the much larger southeastern citadel, known also as the Its Kale.

!Overnight at the the camping “Limnopoula” which is close to Ioannina city. !Day 2 - Arrival to Kalabaka city and visit Meteora Stones - 107km !The Metéora, (literally "middle of the sky", "suspended in the air" or "in the heavens above" — etymologically related to meteorology) is one of the largest and most important complexes of Eastern Orthodox monasteries in Greece, second only to Mount Athos. The six monasteries are built on natural sandstone rock pillars, at the northwestern edge of the Plain of Thessaly near the Pineios river and Pindus Mountains, in central Greece. The nearest town is Kalambaka. !Six of the monasteries remain today. Of these six, four were inhabited by men, and two by women. Each monastery has fewer than 10 inhabitants. The monasteries are now tourist attractions. All of these monasteries are located at Metéora in Greece, and most are perched on high cliffs and now accessible by staircases cut into the rock formations. They were created to serve monks and nuns following the teachings of the Eastern Orthodox Church. Of the six intact monasteries, the Holy Monastery of St. Stephen and Monastery Roussanou are inhabited by nuns.

Overnight at Castraki camping with magical view to Meteora Rocks !!Day 3 Driving to Delphi - Visit of the archeological site 230km !Delphi is both an archaeological site and a modern town in Greece on the south-western spur of Mount Parnassus. In myths dating to the classical period of Ancient Greece (510-323 BC), the site of Delphi was believed to be determined by Zeus when he sought to find the centre of his "Grandmother Earth" (Ge, Gaea, or Gaia). He sent two eagles flying from the eastern and western extremities, and the path of the eagles crossed over Delphi where the omphalos, or navel of Gaia was found. !Earlier myths include traditions that Pythia, or the Delphic oracle, already was the site of an important oracle in the pre-classical Greek world (as early as 1400 BC) and, rededicated from about 800 BC, when it served as the major site during classical times for the worship of the god Apollo.

!For the last evening in Athens it is a nice idea to visit one of the local taverns with live greek traditional music with bouzouki and guitar.

Overnight at the camping “Athens”. !!Day 7 Visit Nafplion - Day off in Nafplion - 170 km !Nafplio is one of the first cities in Greece that won independence. November 29th, 1822 a group of Greek rebels overpowered the Turks in Palamidi, and the next day the city could celebrate its freedom. !Palamidi is the fortress that dominates the city, in the sense that it almost floats on a steep hill (216 m) over Nafplio. Between 1711 and 1714 the Venetians built the castle (an amazingly short time), and this is in fact the final fortress of importance the Venetians built outside their own country. It’s also considered one of the most impressive. Yet, in 1715, one year after completion, the Turks defeated the castle. !!

The Venetians built the small fortress Bourtzi, located in the Argolic gulf  and close to Nafplio, in 1471. Bourtzi was originally part of the city's defenses, and thick chains ran from the castle to the mainland to prevent enemy ships from docking.

!Between 1865 and 1935 Bourtzi were the executioner’s residence. The reason, of course, was that no one wanted to be neighbors with people in this profession. Later Bourtzi became a hotel / restaurant – what a contrast! Now it’s purely a tourist attraction, and has become the symbol of Nafplio. !Small boats head out to the fortress, leaving from the port fairly regularly. The trip lasts only a couple of minutes, and the view towards the city is at its best just before sunset. !Nafplio's oldest castle, Acronafplía, rises at the top of the old town. Once the whole city existed within these walls. Parts of the castle was built already in the Bronze Age, and there are still remnants of these ancient walls in the western part of the castle. Acronafplia was later extended and amplified by respectively Romans, Franks, Venetians and Turks. The thick castle walls form

a nice backdrop for the city, but sadly most of this castle has disappeared. !Overnight at camping “Nicolas I”. !!Day 8 Visit Mycenae and Epidaurus !Mycenae was a fortified late Bronze Age city located between two hills on the Argolid plain of the Peloponnese, Greece. The acropolis today dates from between the 14th and 13th century BCE when the Mycenaean civilization was at its peak of power, influence and artistic expression. In Greek mythology the city was founded by Perseus, who gave the site its name either after his sword scabbard (mykes) fell to the ground and was regarded as a good omen or as he found a water spring near a mushroom (mykes). Perseus was the first king of the Perseid dynasty which ended with Eurytheus (instigator of Hercules' famous twelve labours). The succeeding dynasty was the Atreids, whose first king, Atreus, is traditionally believed to have reigned around 1250 BCE. Atreus’ son Agamemnon is believed to have been not only king of Mycenae but of all of the Archaean Greeks and leader of their expedition to Troy to recapture Helen. In Homer’s account of the Trojan War in the Iliad, Mycenae (or Mykene) is described as a ‘well-founded citadel’, as ‘wide-wayed’ and as ‘golden Mycenae’, the latter supported by the recovery of over 15 kilograms of gold objects recovered from the shaft graves in the acropolis.    !Epidaurus is famous for its huge theatre that delighted Pausanias for its symmetry and beauty, used again today for dramatic performances, the ceremonial hestiatoreion (banqueting hall), and a palaestra. The theater was designed in the 4th century BC. The original 34 rows were extended in Roman times by another

21 rows. As is usual for Greek theatres (and as opposed to Roman ones), the view on a lush landscape behind the skênê is an integral part of the theatre itself and is not to be obscured. It seats up to 14,000 people. The theatre is admired for its exceptional acoustics, which permit almost perfect intelligibility of unamplified spoken words from the proscenium or skēnē to all 14,000 spectators, regardless of their seating. Famously, tour guides have their groups scattered in the stands and show them how they can easily hear the sound of a match struck at center-stage.

Overnight at camping “Nicolas I”. !!Day 9 Driving to Monemvasia 170 km and overnight in Elafonisos - the island with the most beautiful beach in Greece !Tip: A very picturesque route is driving through Kosmas. !Monemvasia is located on a small island off the east coast of the Peloponnese. The island is linked to the mainland by a short causeway 200m in length. Its area consists mostly of a large plateau some 100 metres above sea level, up to 300 m wide and 1  km long, the site of a powerful medieval fortress. The town

walls and many Byzantine churches remain from the medieval period.

The town's name derives from two Greek words, mone and emvasia, meaning "single entrance". Its Italian form, Malvasia, gave its name to Malmsey wine. Monemvasia's nickname is the Gibraltar of the East or The Rock. The town and fortress were founded in 583 by inhabitants of the mainland seeking refuge from the Slavic and the Avaric invasion of Greece. A history of the invasion and occupation of the Peloponnese was recorded in the medieval Chronicle of Monemvasia. Tips: Hiking a small path around the rock of Monemvasia that leads in the castle and Wine Tasting. !In the evening the boat to Elafonisos is waiting to take us to paradise. Elafonisos has one of the most beautiful beaches in Greece. Many people visit the island for its light coloured, sandy beaches and the green-blue water.

The beach right in front of the camping is truly a small paradise. Take the chance and forget for a while the sightseeing and the monuments. !In the evening a walk in the town of Elafonisos gives you a small taste of the greek islands. !Overnight at camping “Simos”. !Day 11 Arrival to Gythion 100 km !Enjoy the rest of the day at beach or the swimming pool. There are a lot to see in this region so you have to fill up your batteries. !Enjoy your stay at camping “Gythion Bay” !!Day 12 Visit the Byzantine city of Mistras (50 km) !Mystras is situated on the slopes of Taygetos Mountain. The archaeological site stands above the modern village of Mystras and the city of Sparta. The greenery surrounding the area is composed mainly by pine trees and cypresses. Some small rivers and lakes are found in the region. Mystras or Mistras is a fortified town and a former municipality in Laconia, Peloponnese, Greece. It served as the capital of the Byzantine Despotate of the Morea in the 14th and 15th centuries, experiencing a period of prosperity and cultural flowering. The site remained inhabited throughout the Ottoman period, when it was mistaken by Western travellers for ancient Sparta. In the 1830s, it was abandoned and the new town of Sparti was built, approximately eight kilometres to the east.

Return to camping “Gythion Bay” and relax at the beach or the swimming pool. !!Day 13 Daytrip to Mani and the Caves of Diros - 60 km !Mani is the central peninsula of the three which extend southwards from the Peloponnese in southern Greece. To the east is the Laconian Gulf, to the west the Messenian Gulf. The peninsula forms a continuation of the Taygetos mountain range, the western spine of the Peloponnese. !!People that live in Mani are described as descendants of the ancient Dorian population of the Peloponnese and as such related to the ancient Spartans. The terrain is mountainous and inaccessible (until recently many Mani villages could be accessed only by sea), and the regional name "Mani" is thought to have meant originally "dry" or "barren". In the early modern period, the inhabitants had a reputation as fierce and proudly independent warriors, who practice piracy and fierce blood feuds. For the most part, the Maniots lived in fortified villages (and "house-towers") where they defended their lands against the armies of William II Villehardouin and later against those of the Ottomans. !!Diros Caves have been described as the most impressive limnetic caves of the whole world. They consist of three different caverns: the Alepotripae, Katafygi and Vlyxada that is the only one that is open for visits. Those caverns were first explored in 1950. The temperature in the interior area of the cavern is around 16-20o C and the water temperature is around 12ο C. You can explore the inside of the cavern with little boats along

with the boatman showing you around and giving you information about the history of the cavern. The total length of the tour is about 1.2km long on boat and 300m on foot, and the duration is about 20-25min by boat and another 5-10min by feet. Inside the Neolithic Museum that is located beside the cavern, you can see many priceless historical findings that can be dated back in the Paleolithic period. Diros caverns and the Neolithic museum are two of the most famous attractions for all Mani visitors. !

Tenaron is the southest part of coastal Europe. Here existed according to Pausanias, the temple of Tenariou Poseidon, who was worshipped especially by Lakones, and it became the center of the “Brotherhood of Freelakones”. It is said that the ancient temple of Poseidon was build near the chapel of Asomatos. They believe that they took stones and other materials from the ancient temple in order to build it. It is also noted in the writings

It possesses not only sanctuaries and public buildings, but also imposing fortifications, and houses and tombs. It enjoys, amongst other things, the advantage of never having been destroyed or covered by later settlements, and is located on an unspoiled inland site. Its natural setting combines the grandeur of the mountains of Delphi with the low-lying, riverine tranquillity of Olympia, the dominating bare limestone mass of Ithome, the site

of the ancient acropolis, with the low fertile valley around the ancient city.

Overnight in Kardamili at the camping Kalogria. !Day 14 Visit Kalamata and hike Polylimnio waterfalls - 40 km !The history of Kalamata begins with Homer, who mentions Farai, an ancient city built more or less where the Kalamata Castle stands today. It was believed that during ancient times the area that the city presently occupies was covered by the sea, but the proto-Greek and archaic period remains (Poseidon temple) that were unearthed at Akovitika region prove the opposite. There are numerous historical and cultural sights in Kalamata, such as the Villehardouin castle, the Ypapanti Byzantine church, the Kalograion monastery with its silk-weaving workshop where the Kalamata scarves are made, and the municipal railway park. The Church of the Holy Apostles is where Mavromichalis declared the revolt against Ottoman rule in 1821. Art collections are housed at the Municipal Gallery, the Archeological Museum of Messinia and the Folk Art Museum. !

!!Day 15 Visit Methoni and Koroni - 10 km !Koroni and Methoni were called "The eyes of Venice". The architecture of Koroni invokes a Greek island feeling and the view of the Messinian Bay and the Taigetos mountains is quite impressive. Koroni is crowned by its castle, which you can enter at any time of the day as there is no entrance that closes. The best way is to enter from the top using the entrance near the old town hall and then walk along the church overlooking Zaga Beach, the cemetery and the little monastery, exiting towards Koroni. The main attraction of Methoni is its castle, which, due to the fact

that it has been neglected during the past years, has a particular charm to it. During the past the castle has had changing owners: Venetians, Turks and Greeks. Some of its exterior walls have started to slide into the sea. In spring season the castle area is dotted by wild flowers and wild garlic. Don’t forget to cross over

It was a significant kingdom in Mycenaean Greece, with remains of the so-called "Palace of Nestor" excavated nearby, named after Nestor, the king of Pylos in Homer's Iliad. In Classical times, the site was uninhabited, but became the site of the Battle of Pylos in 425  BC, during the Peloponnesian War. Pylos is scarcely mentioned thereafter until the 13th century, when it became part of the Frankish Principality of Achaea. Increasingly known by its French name of Port-de-Jonc or its Italian name Navarino, in the 1280s the Franks built the Old Navarino castle on the site. Pylos came under the control of the Republic of Venice from 1417 until 1500, when it was conquered by the

The area remained under Ottoman control, with the exception of a brief period of renewed Venetian rule in 1685–1715 and a Russian occupation in 1770–71, until the outbreak of the Greek War of Independence in 1821. Ibrahim Pasha of Egypt recovered it for the Ottomans in 1825, but the defeat of the Turco-Egyptian fleet in the 1827 Battle of Navarino forced Ibrahim to withdraw from the Peloponnese and confirmed Greek independence. In the port of Pylos water taxis make the tour of Navarino Bay with stops at the wooden Russian church and the memorials of the French, British and Russian Admirals. !Voidokilia Beach is a popular beach in Messinia in the Mediterranean area. Day 17 Ancient Olympia - 110 km !Olympia was the site of the ancient Olympic Games, which were celebrated every four years by the Greeks. Olympia was situated in a valley in Elis, in western Peloponnisos (Peloponnesus), through which runs the Alpheus River. It was not a town, but only a sanctuary with buildings associated with games and the worship of the gods. Olympia was a national shrine of the Greeks and contained many treasures of Greek art, such as temples, monuments, altars, theaters, statues, and votive offerings of brass and marble. The Altis, or sacred precinct, enclosed a level space about 200 m (about 660 ft) long by nearly 177 m (nearly 580 ft) broad. In this were the chief centers of religious worship, the votive buildings, and buildings associated with the administration of the games. The French began excavations here in 1829. German

explorations of 1875-81 threw much light upon the plans of the buildings; they were resumed in 1936, 1952, and 1960-61. Many

valuable objects were discovered, the most important of which was a statue of Hermes, the messenger of the gods, by Praxiteles. !The most celebrated temple was the Temple of Zeus, dedicated to the father of the gods. In this temple was a statue of Zeus made of ivory and gold, the masterpiece of the Athenian sculptor Phidias. Next to the Temple of Zeus ranked the Heraeum, dedicated to Hera, the wife of Zeus. In this temple, probably the oldest Doric building known, stood the table on which were placed the garlands prepared for the victors in the games. The votive buildings included a row of 12 treasure houses and the Philippeum, a circular Ionic building dedicated by Philip II, king of Macedonia, to himself. Outside the Altis, to the east, were the Stadium and the Hippodrome, where the contests took place; on the west were the Palaestra, or wrestling school, and the Gymnasium, where all competitors were obliged to train for at least one month.

!The Archaeological Museum of Olympia, one of the most important museums in Greece, presents the long history of the most celebrated sanctuary of antiquity, the sanctuary of Zeus,
