Sushant was murderedThe year, 2020 seems to be one of the worst year for

the Bollywood film industry as we have lost a lot of bigstars like Irrfan Khan, Rishi Kapoor, Sushant SinghRajput, Saroj Khan and Jagdeep. This is definitely a great loss for theindian cinema.

The death of Sushant Singh Rajput has left everyone around the coun-try in a state of shock. Sushant was a bright, intellectual star but unfor-tunately, the vultures of Bollywood could not gulp down his success andbecame an enemy of a person who just wanted to entertain people andgaze out at the stars through his telescope.

Now they are covering up his murder making it look like a suicide.Jubel D'Cruz, Mumbai

Letter to the Editor....

Water conservation is the need of the hourThe realization that if corrective measures are not taken immedi-

ately, there is going to be acute shortage of fresh potable drinkingwater has finally dawned upon us. After air, water is the second mostessential lifeline for the survival of human beings. Nature createdadequate resources for their survival, however because of meddlingby the human beings, the resources have not only been polluted, theyhave also been depleted due to gross mismanagement. Pollution fromland-based sources is greatly affecting the aquatic biological resourc-es and biodiversity. Rampant use of pesticides is further making thefresh water resources unusable.

Though water is one of the replenishable resources, yet due to de-pleting green cover because of excessive deforestation and consequentreduction in rainfall, perennial drought like situation has been creat-ed in many parts of our country. It is because of this reason it hasbecome all the more important to conserve water, besides finding meansto replenish the aquifers. While each one of us can do our bit by con-serving water at home and being more cautious while using it, the realsolution lies in rainwater harvesting, which has to be followed reli-giously wherever possible.

Rainwater harvesting technique is two pronged. Firstly, by collect-ing rain water from roof tops and open catchment areas and storing inhuge underground sumps and secondly by arresting the surface runoff into the rivers and seas by constructing percolation chambers torecharge the aquifer. The former has a limitation that it can be adopt-ed only during monsoons. Besides, it requires huge investment by wayof construction of water retaining structures. The latter is a long-term solution and shall go a long way in making this vital resourceavailable for human consumption. Even for places like Mumbai/ NaviMumbai, where sub soil water is not potable in many areas, collectionof surface run off into artificially created lakes after treating themfor water retainment, can provide viable solution. This rainwater af-ter treatment can be used for all purposes. Further, the sewage treat-ment plants can be provided in the residential complexes as the recy-cled water can be used at least for washing vehicles and horticulturepurposes. Besides, this shall prevent pollution of water bodies intowhich this sewage would have been otherwise discharged.

Already the Hon'ble Supreme Court has intervened and taken leadin making it mandatory for the various organizations to implementthe rainwater harvesting. Even the bureau of Indian standards hascome out with code on this. Many state governments have made itcompulsory to have provision for rainwater harvesting schemes in theconstruction of complexes before the commencement and occupancycertificates are issued for the work. It is heartening that many of theschools, colleges and residential complexes are utilizing this techniqueand are thus contributing immensely in conserving water. The townplanning authorities should also implement this in letter and spiritand thus save the human civilization from evident disaster in makingon account of depleting water resources.

an order should havebeen issued or the infor-mation about the alter-native arrangementshould have been pub-lished. Many decisionsof the corporation havebeen taken withoutproper planning”.

Even after the com-plete lockdown, thenumber of Covid pa-tients in the municipalarea does not seem to

have decreased at all.It is further alleged

that while Municipaladministration, policeadministration, reve-nue department are allworking to bring thenumber of patientsunder control, there isno coordination be-tween the depart-ments. The MunicipalCorporation has is-sued orders that home

delivery services canbe provided. However,it has been observedthat the police depart-ment is taking actionagainst many homeservice providers. Themunicipal corporationhas resorted to thelockdown option but ithas been very difficultfor the poor, the work-ers, the wage earners, the middle class sec-tion, who are reelingunder great financialdifficulties.

IMA, Maharashtra urges state government to increasethe use of Plasma Therapy for treating Covid 19

They appeal to make blood donation for plasma mandatory by all recovered patients

By Varda Sharma

NAVI MUMBAI: Inview of a rapid increasein the number of COV-ID-19 patients dailyand scarcity of essen-tial antiviral medi-cines, Indian MedicalAssociation, Maha-rashtra has appealedthe Government ofMaharashtra to in-crease the use of Plas-ma Therapy.

“The therapy wasthoroughly tested atvarious GovernmentMedical colleges andproved effective as a lifesaving measure in thepatients with hypoxiawho need Oxygen anda possible ICU admis-sion. However, it is notused frequently at var-ious treatment centresin Maharashtra. It issaid that, one of themain reasons being

non availability ofPlasma donors in suf-ficient number,” saysDr. Avinash Bhondwe,President, IMA, Maha-rashtra.

“Further, it is alsolearnt that the patients

recovered from COVID19 are asking hugeamounts to donatetheir blood. Hence,IMA, Maharashtrastate suggests the gov-ernment to make itmandatory for all thepatients who have gotcured from the deadlydisease, to donate bloodfor the Plasma Thera-

py,” he adds.To facilitate this pro-

cedure, IMA, Maha-rashtra suggests totake a mandatory un-dertaking from all thepatients to report on15th day after the dis-

charge or recovery.“Thereafter they can betested for the fitnessfor the Blood Donation.A separate plasmabank may be formed forthe procedure at everyplace with the help ofthe blood banks in thepublic as well as theprivate sector. The gov-ernment may make

this procedure of blooddonation for the plas-ma collection compul-sory as per the provi-sions of the 'EpidemicAct 1897 or a new Or-dinance,” adds Dr.Bhondwe.

“We at IMA, Maha-rashtra State stronglyfeel that the increasedavailability of plasmawill not only improvethe recovery rate of theCOVID 19 patients butalso reduce the mortal-ity in the state of Ma-harashtra,” says Dr.Pankaj Bandarkar,State Secretary, IMA,Maharashtra addingthat the citizens shouldnot see such compul-sion to donate plasma“as an autocratic activ-ity but an obligationtowards the humanityand commitment tosave human lives”.

Monsoon woes : Ride, walk carefully, drains with missing slabs lie ahead!

By Arun Kr Shrivastav

NAVI MUMBAI: Thenotorious monsoon rainis peaking up in Mum-bai and because of thelockdown the civicagencies are not able tomaintain the roads anddrains leading to possi-bility of mishaps. Inparticular, drains withmissing cover slabs area major problem.

While the roads inUlwe were being givena new layer of tarmacbefore COVID out-break, the sudden lock-down left the work half-finished. So, many ofthe roads are in ex-tremely good conditionwhile some of the roadsare in bad shape withpotholes and pools ofmuddy water all overthe place.

“Just before the lock-down was imposed, thework of laying the roadin front of our societybegan, and suddenly ithad to be stopped be-cause of the lockdown.A massive drive of refur-bishing the black coat

was carried out in mostother sectors in Ulwe,”informs a resident inSector-8.

While most of theroads are in good con-dition, there are manystretches that have pot-holes and roadside

drains with missingcovers. After good roads, you don’t really antici-pate a sudden twist in

the quality of road sur-faces. That’s where ac-cidents are more likelyto take place.

“During my morn-

ing walks of around 5km, I have noticed atleast five dangerouslyopen manholes or miss-ing drain slabs, sealedby plastic cordon-offtapes. I have also no-ticed a couple of simi-larly open manholes ordrains with missingcovers which are notcordoned off. Thesespots are dangerous forboth bikers and pedes-trians,” he explains.

Because of the lock-down, vehicular trafficis mostly off the roadsbut many people arecoming out of theirhomes for walks.

“In these circum-stances when peopleare less careful andmore complacent, acci-dents are more likely. Also, the open man-holes or huge opendrains are dangerousfor stray animals. Someof these drains are 8 to10 feet deep,” says an-other resident of thesame locality. The writer is a freelancer
