International Student SupportStudying abroad is a big step for many students but our dedicated International Office is on hand at every stage of the journey. This includes visa and immigration advice, English Language Support (both Pre-Sessional and In-Sessional English), a chaplain specifically for international students and an elected Student Diversity Representative to ensure your views are heard during your studies. We also host an International Induction before the start of term with special events and activities to help you settle in, and we have valuable links with the International Society of Manchester.

rncm.ac.uk/international

Our experienced Student Services team can advise and guide on anything from wellbeing to finance both before you join and during your studies. Students with disabilities or a specific learning difficulty can be assured of support from the audition stage onwards, and we provide a free and confidential counselling and chaplaincy service for anyone who may wish to discuss personal matters.

One-off or regular Alexander Technique lessons are available for a small charge, helping you to improve personal performance and avoid undue effort or stress, and our wellbeing staff can offer advice on utilising organisations such as the British Association for Performing Arts Medicine (BAPAM). We’re also proud to have a Lecturer in Musicians’ Health and Wellbeing to further develop this provision across the RNCM.

rncm.ac.uk/wellbeing

Student WelfareStudent welfare is a priority and we’re dedicated to ensuring that the RNCM is a safe and comfortable environment for everyone within our community. We’re also extremely committed to the physical and mental health of our students, and want everyone to feel fully supported while they’re with us.

‘We want our students to learn how to make music with excellence but also how to live fulfilling lives as musicians and as human beings more generally. This means that what they are learning is not only about doing but also about being. We want to maximise our efforts to make sure they experience what being well as a musician means during their time at the RNCM.’ Sara Ascenso, Lecturer in Musicians’ Health and Wellbeing

But more than this, our SU is a fantastic support network for all students, offering help, advice and a friendly face whenever you need it.

Known the world over for talent and innovation, Manchester seeps with music of all genres and we’re proud to be part of it. Not only is it home to the Hallé, BBC Philharmonic and Manchester Camerata, but bands such as 10cc, The Hollies, Bee Gees, Buzzcocks, Joy Division, New Order, The Smiths, The Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, Oasis and Elbow also have their roots here.

With venues ranging from the impressive Manchester Arena to the stunning Bridgewater Hall, there are plenty of opportunities to see classical and contemporary performers, alongside international artists, every day of the week. And the RNCM, from our base on Oxford Road, is perfectly placed to enjoy it all. Excellent transport links make coming in and out of the city easy and the centre of town – with its feast of social and culinary offerings – is just a 20-minute walk away.

Living HereOver 100,000 students call Manchester their home, and it’s not hard to see why. Our vibrant city has it all: a rich and varied music scene, a proud history of science and industry, nightlife, culture and politics, and a host of famous sporting venues.

AccommodationAs a new student, you can choose to live in Sir Charles Groves Hall of Residence, right next door to the College. Our students occupy the majority of its 612 rooms, which means you can be part of the community and make friends as soon as you arrive. You’ll also have the benefit of being able to practise in your room between 9am and 9pm, and pianists can request a loan piano if required.

Owned by Liberty Living, all rooms in Sir Charles Groves Hall are en-suite, grouped in four, with a shared fully-equipped kitchen/lounge. There are also two senior residents and one member of staff on hand to provide support and assistance if needed.

Alternatively, you may wish to rent a flat or share a house privately. Manchester has a huge selection of affordable accommodation within easy distance of the RNCM. These are available via Manchester Student Homes, an agency owned and managed by the city’s universities.

The GRNCM takes that difficulty away, offering those with outstanding musical and academic ability the opportunity to study two degree courses simultaneously: the Graduate Diploma of the RNCM (GRNCM) and the Bachelor of Music (MusB) at The University of Manchester, located 300 yards away.

This unique and competitive programme, known informally as the ‘Joint Course’, is designed for students who are not only busy performers with a wide variety of professional experience, but extremely intelligent musical thinkers.

Study comprises the entire three-year MusB (Hons) programme at The University and approximately two-thirds of our four-year BMus (Hons). Your time with us involves intensive one-to-one tuition, specialist classes and masterclasses, performance opportunities and a series of modules dedicated

Performance (performance practice or practice-led research)

The 2014 Research Excellence Framework (in place until 2020), recognised us as the UK’s leading music college for research. Our postgraduate research degrees, validated and awarded by Manchester Metropolitan University (Man Met), provide opportunities to conduct independent research guided by specialist staff. If you have a strongly defined idea of a research project in some aspect of music, and you want to be given the freedom to pursue that idea through a process of rigorous enquiry and reflection, then a research degree may well be right for you. You’ll have access to our outstanding resources and facilities, supervision of the highest calibre, individually tailored research training, and a range of opportunities for career development and enhancement at the RNCM, Man Met and through the North West Consortium Doctoral Training Partnership.

Research SupervisionAll students are supported by a supervisory team, normally drawn from the RNCM’s specialist faculty, and made up of a principal supervisor with specific expertise in your area of research, a secondary supervisor, and a Director of Studies based at Man Met. Students’ research topics and methods should be congruent with those of their supervisors, so you should start by identifying a potential supervisor for your project. You can do this by consulting the list of staff research interests in the Guidelines for Applicants, available on our website.

Composition‘Composers write because they want to hear what they have created, and in the School of Composition we make the aspirations of self-expression become a reality.’ Professor Adam Gorb, Head of School

Immersed in the legacy of alumni such as Sir Harrison Birtwistle, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, Alexander Goer and John McCabe, our School of Composition remains a laboratory of invention. A place where new things happen; where you develop your craft with inspirational tutors and hear your creations comealive on stage. Building on a foundation of creativity, dedication and determination, our School of Wind, Brass and Percussion provides an immersive and collaborative environment for young musicians.

Intensive individual training, masterclasses with international artists and specialist group tuition are complemented by a range of performance and audition activities, both at the RNCM and through worldwide partnerships such as the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and Netherlands Wind Ensemble. Popular Music‘The most enjoyable aspect of my work is enabling students to realise their potential. We encourage them to dream big, work hard and be the best they can possibly be.’Andy Stott, Head of Popular Music

In 2015 we became the UK’s first conservatoire to offer a four-year BMus degree in Popular Music, and we haven’t looked back since. Embracing innovation, diversity and change, we train students to become professional performers and independent original artists through a combination of intensive study and real-world experience. You’ll develop your musicianship and communication skills through Principal Study training, ensemble coaching and specialist classes, and regularly have the chance to perform for and receive invaluable guidance from international guest artists and industry experts during our Friday Masterclass Series.

We’ve developed strong partnerships with organisations including the BBC and Sony, and established an exceptional network of educators, practitioners and students from conservatoires in Valencia, Amsterdam, Rotterdam and California through our Interplay initiative, all of which provide enviable opportunities for artistic and career development. We also run our own independent label, Northern Quarter Records, which signs and promotes select bands on the course, and we’re home to the 40-strong RNCM Session Orchestra, the College’s flagship ensemble for cross-school collaboration.

Conducting‘It remains a great privilege to guide the incredibly talented young conductors at the RNCM and to watch them constantly grow through the many and varied conducting experiences we give them.’Clark Rundell, Head of Conducting

Our conducting programmes are underpinned by the belief that you can only learn your craft by conducting other musicians in live rehearsal and performance.

Whether you’re studying as a postgraduate, a Junior Fellow, or on one of our short courses, the enviable podium experience and intensive training you’ll receive ensures you develop the necessary skills to advance with confidence in the profession.

In addition to conducting student instrumental and vocal performances, the most valuable gift you can receive is the opportunity to lead exceptionally experienced players within professional orchestras. This is why our partnerships with the BBC Philharmonic and Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestras are an integral part of our offer.

Postgraduates and Junior Fellows work as assistant conductors with these orchestras throughout the year, and masters students currently take their final examinations in concert with the BBC Philharmonic.

We also offer a 30-credit conducting option to all postgraduates from other disciplines. Places for these are limited and by audition only, but if chosen, provide specialist classes, ensemble sessions and the opportunity to observe sections of the full postgraduate and Junior Fellowship conducting programmes.

With over 500 events taking place each year, we’re recognised as one of the UK’s busiest live music venues, providing a broad range of public performance opportunities as well as the chance to experience high quality live music onsite.

Driven by our diverse artistic programme, opportunities include everything from large orchestral projects and cross-school collaborations, to full-scale opera productions, intimate chamber concerts and solo recitals. Guest conductors, composers and musicians also work with students throughout the year, heightening the breadth of training and different musical perspectives we’re proud to offer. And there are plenty of chances for students to propose their own projects as part of our Spotlight series of pre- and post-concert events, Monday Recitals, or RNCM Lab Week, dedicated entirely to student creativity.

Our unrivalled performance opportunities mean that experiences aren’t limited to the RNCM. With the support of our Professional Engagements team, which coordinates over 350 paid external performances every year, many students head out on the road, presenting events at venues across the UK and taking part in exciting collaborations with professional organisations.

Some students also have the opportunity to tour overseas during their course. For example, our Symphony Orchestra has travelled to Italy to take part in Montepulciano’s Cantiere Internazionale d’Arte for almost 20 years and our Big Band has participated in the Malta International Arts Festival and presented workshops and concerts in Changzhou, China. Collaborations also provide valuable opportunities for performance in other countries. Popular music students have worked with peers from partner institutions in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Valencia for an exciting initiative called Interplay, and in 2018 over 100 classical musicians joined forces with students from the Paris Conservatoire for a series of concerts in Manchester, London and Paris to mark the end of the First World War.

Varying in size and focus, there are opportunities to develop your playing as part of the RNCM Symphony, Concert, Chamber, String, Wind and Session Orchestras and Brass and Big Bands. We also have a number of instrument-specific ensembles for Brass, Wind, Baroque, Jazz, Harp, Guitar, Percussion and Saxophone, and a Brand New Orchestra and New Ensemble which première works by our composition students.

Orchestral projects range from short, intense experiences focusing on individual works, to longer, in-depth explorations of repertoire. These are regularly led by guest professional conductors and orchestra leaders, often incorporating visiting composers and soloists. Recent guests include conductors Martyn Brabbins, Elim Chan, Holly Mathieson, En Shao, Vassily Sinaisky, Markus Stenz, Duncan Ward and Simone Young, violinists Ning Feng and Henning Kraggerud, cellist István Várdai, trumpeter Markus Stockhausen, and composers Mark-Anthony Turnage, Thea Musgrave, Kaija Saariaho and George Benjamin.

Orchestras and EnsemblesOur orchestras and ensembles cover genres from classical to contemporary.

Ensemble activity is compulsory during the first two years of undergraduate study, with the option to continue it further if desired. We’ll support you in forming an ensemble when you arrive, after which you’ll receive regular lessons and classes with resident and visiting tutors. These include former and current members of the Elias, Chilingirian, Talich and Skampa String Quartets, the Gould and Sitkovetsky Piano Trios, Ensemble 360, Zephyr Winds and Apollo Saxophone Quartet.

We also benefit from close links with chamber music organisations worldwide, and as the UK’s only member of the European Chamber Music Academy our advanced chamber ensembles can participate in classes at institutions such as the Paris Conservatoire and University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna.

Ensembles such as the RNCM Jazz Collective and Big Band provide opportunities to perform to public audiences throughout the year, with our Big Band regularly featuring distinguished guest artists.

In addition, students on the BMus programme can opt to undertake jazz electives. These help you develop a knowledge of core jazz repertoire, understand how to approach improvisation, and explore the practical aspects of putting together a jazz performance. You’ll also receive specialist tuition from visiting artists and musicians prolific on the professional jazz scene, which can include participation in masterclasses and performance projects.

rncm.ac.uk/jazz

JazzIt’s vital that everyone has the freedom to explore their interest in and passion for jazz during their studies.

As such, all students are given the opportunity to develop skills on historical instruments during their time with us, benefitting from the expertise of our specialist tutors and visiting artists.

Our orchestral performances, chamber concerts and opera productions often feature early repertoire, and we have an extensive range of period instruments available for student loan. We’re also home to a Baroque Orchestra and Ensemble, a Collection of Historic Musical Instruments, and provide additional coaching, masterclasses and performance opportunities via our partnership with the Academy of Ancient Music.

You can also apply for paid work via our Student Ambassador Scheme, supporting our Marketing and Communications team in promoting what we do to prospective students. And you can pitch your own project ideas to a panel of business and industry experts in the hope of securing an RNCM Entrepreneurship Award.

We worked hard to forge strong relationships with around 80 orchestras and ensembles across Europe, and have important partnerships with the BBC Philharmonic, Hallé, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Manchester Camerata and Opera North closer to home. We’ve also built substantial links with organisations such as the BBC at Media City in Salford and Global Radio (home of Classic FM), as well as numerous performing arts organisations, festivals and agencies across the UK and beyond, all of which provide exceptional opportunities for you to develop projects, embrace real-world experiences and refine your career aspirations.
