M U S K E T S H O T SFIVE-YEAR PL ANRobert Morris has risen to national prominence over the past five seasons, all of which have seen the Colonials finish at .500 or better. Since joining Atlantic Hockey in 2010-11, RMU is 94-66-24 over-all - the 13th-best winning percentage among 59 Division I teams over that span.

NEW HEIGH T S IN T HE POLLSThe Colonials broke into the USCHO.com top 20 on Nov. 3, taking the No. 18 ranking. It was the first time RMU had a number next to its name since 2012-13. RMU bumped up to No. 17 on two occasions during the fall semester, matching an all-time high for the program in any national survey. As of Feb. 16, the Colonials were ranked in 11 of the previous 14 USCHO polls.

A NIGH T TO REMEMBERRMU’s 9-4 victory over American International on Jan. 17 was one to remember. A sellout crowd at 84 Lumber Arena watched Cody Wydo set the program’s career scoring record with a five-point night (3g, 2a), with linemate Scott Jacklin also adding five points (1g, 4a). Wydo and Jacklin tied the RMU single-game high for points, while Jacklin’s four helpers matched the most ever by a Colonial in one contest. Zac Lynch (2g, 2a) and Matt Cope (3a) tied career highs for points as well.

CODY KEEPS CLIMBINGAfter a program-record 31-goal, 54-point junior year, Hobey Baker Award candidate Cody Wydo has paced RMU’s attack once again. The Michigan native, who entered the season as the active Division I leader in goals, has 39 points (18g, 21a) in his first 30 games, the seventh-highest total in the na-tion. His five-point night Jan. 17 vs. AIC gave him the all-time program scoring record at 139 points

A BANNER YEARThe year 2014 saw the Colonials rise from the bottom of the Atlantic Hockey Conference to a league title and NCAA Tournament appearance, followed by a historic start to the 2014-15 season. From January to December, RMU went 29-9-6 for a .727 points percentage. The Colonials were also the highest-scoring program in the nation over that span, netting 172 goals in 44 games for a potent 3.91 goals-per-game average.

KUDOS FROM AT L AN TIC HOCKEY The Colonials have not only succeeded on a team-wide basis this season, they’ve also earned sev-eral individual honors. On top of Cody Wydo and Dalton Izyk each earning Atlantic Hockey monthly awards in October, Daniel Leavens won player of the month for December and Zac Lynch claimed the prize for January. RMU has claimed 16 AHC player of the week honors thus far. David Friedmann (two), Wydo (two), Terry Shafer (two) and Izyk (three) have all won multiple weekly awards.

RUNNING T HE GAUN T LETFor the first time in program history, the Colonials played three different ranked teams consecu-tively from Dec. 29 - Jan. 4. RMU emerged from that grueling stretch with a 1-2-1 record, including a 4-2 win over No. 20 Penn State at the Three Rivers Classic and a 2-2 tie with No. 13 Bowling Green outdoors in Toledo. The Colonials also faced No. 14/17 Colgate in the 3RC championship game.

ANOT HER SCORING LINEThe 2014-15 Colonials boast impressive scoring depth, exemplified by the success of David Fried-mann, Brady Ferguson and Daniel Leavens. Since being united on Nov. 1 against RIT, the trio has combined for 59 points (24g, 35a) in 23 games. They were especially prolific from Nov. 21 to Dec. 13, accumulating 11 goals and 27 total points during RMU’s five-game unbeaten streak (4-0-1).

T HE RACE IS ONZac Lynch and Cody Wydo continue to duel for the program’s all-time lead in shorthanded goals. Lynch took the solo lead in that category with his fifth Nov. 22 at American International, but Wydo caught up with a shorthanded tally in RMU’s overtime win over Sacred Heart on Dec. 5. Wydo pushed ahead with his sixth career “shorty” Jan. 23 at Holy Cross - with an assist from Lynch.

WHAT A STARTBy winning their first five games of the 2014-15 season, the Colonials not only established the best start in program history, they also matched their longest win streak in 11 years of Division I hockey. In addition, RMU nine-game unbeaten streak to start (7-0-2) matched its longest ever.

COMING T HROUGH L AT ERobert Morris scored 57 goals in the third period or overtime last season, the third-highest total in the NCAA. The Colonials have continued that trend through the first 28 games of 2014-15, outscor-ing opponents 47-30 in the final regulation frame or later.

WHO WAS ROBERT MORRIS?

Born in 1734 in Liverpool, England, Robert Morris sailed to the United States with his father when he was 14 years old. Morris became a partner at the import export firm of Willing & Morris where he made his millions. After, he became the spokesman for opposition to the Stamp Act, smuggled arms for the new American army and navy, signed the Declaration of Independence, secured financing — often using his personal credit — to fight the Revolutionary War and served as a Pennsylvania state senator. He died in Philadelphia on May 8, 1806.

M U S K E T S H O T SAVOIDING T HE GOOSE EGGRobert Morris was not shut out in 2013-14 and, prior to the final game of the fall semester, the Colo-nials had gone 73 games since last getting blanked. That streak, which dated back to Jan. 25, 2013, ended with a 3-0 loss to Mercyhurst on Dec. 14 - although the Colonials fired 41 shots on goal.

BUILDING A ‘CL ASSIC’ T RADITIONThe third-annual Three Rivers Classic was again held at CONSOL Energy Center, home of the NHL’s Penguins, on Dec. 29-30. After beating No. 20 Penn State in the first round, RMU came up short in the championship game to No. 14/17 Colgate. Western Michigan also participated in the event.

T HEY TOOK IT OU T SIDEOn Jan. 3, Robert Morris and Bowling Green participiated in an outdoor game at Fifth Third Field in Toledo, Ohio, the home of the Triple-A Mudhens baseball team. On a rainy afternoon, the Colonials scored two goals in the third period to tie the 13th-ranked Falcons 2-2.

OWNING OVERTIMEWith their 2-1 loss to Air Force on Nov. 15, the Colonials saw an incredible streak come to a sudden end. Previously, RMU had gone unbeaten in 27 consecutive overtime games, posting an 8-0-19 record in such contests after losing at Canisius in extra time on Nov. 20, 2010.

BREAKING T HROUGHAfter sophomore defensemen John Rey (40th game) and Rob Mann (14th) netted their first NCAA goals in the season’s first month, senior forward David Rigatti scored his first collegiate goal in his 86th RMU game on Oct. 31 against RIT. Freshmen Brady Ferguson, Spencer Dorowicz and Timmy Moore have also recorded their first collegiate goals this season.

BROT HERLY LOVEWith freshman forward Timmy Moore making his NCAA debut Oct. 25 at Army, he and junior defense-man Evan Moore became the third brother tandem to skate together for the Colonials. The Moores, of Grosse Pointe, Michigan, join Colin and Furman South as well as Dave and Rob Cowan in that club.

CEN T URY CLUBForward Jeff Jones played his 100th collegiate game Oct. 11 vs. Lake Superior State, joining fellow seniors Scott Jacklin and Cody Wydo in the century club. Since then, senior David Rigatti and juniors Brandon Denham, Matt Cope, Zac Lynch, Greg Gibson, Evan Moore, Tyson Wilson and Chase Golightly have followed suit.

WYDO, IZYK GO BACK TO BACKWhile the entire team had a terrific October, senior forward Cody Wydo and sophomore goalie Dalton Izyk were honored by Atlantic Hockey on an individual basis. Wydo (6g, 5a) kept up his junior-year pace with 11 points in seven games, while Izyk stopped 97 of 98 shots for a .990 save percentage and a 3-0-0 record. Wydo and Izyk also won Player and Goalie of the Month awards in March.

ONWARD AND UPWARDThe Colonials have finished with a record of .500 or better in four consecutive seasons, going 74-61-19 over that span for a .542 points percentage. Prior to the 2010-11 season, RMU won just 69 of its first 208 games (.379 points percentage) at the NCAA Division I level.

WELCOME TO T HE BIG STAGEIt took Robert Morris three tries, but the Colonials advanced to their first NCAA Men’s Hockey Tour-nament after winning the Atlantic Hockey Championship against Canisius. RMU had two previous chances - the 2007 and ‘09 College Hockey America title games - to earn an automatic bid, but the team fell short in overtime on both occasions.

RESPEC T FROM T HEIR PEERSThe Colonials were tabbed to finish second in the Atlantic Hockey Conference this year in the annual preseason coaches’ poll, six points behind league favorite Mercyhurst. The Colonials accumu-lated three first-place votes as well, helping them to their highest preseason ranking in five Atlantic Hockey campaigns.

PRIME-TIME PL AYERSForward Greg Gibson and Cody Wydo, along with goaltender Dalton Izyk, represented the Colonials on the AHC All-Tournament Team last March. Wydo was also named the tournament’s Most Valu-able Player after recording four goals and five points in the semifinal and championship contests.

FIGH TING T HE POSSESSION BAT T LEThus far this season, RMU has launched 48 percent of the shot attempts in its games, a measure-ment known as Corsi. Judging by Fenwick, which factors out blocked shots, the Colonials stand at 50 percent. In terms of simple shots on goal, RMU has owned 52 percent of those.

REGUL AR-SEASON STANDOU T STwo Colonials earned regular season honors from Atlantic Hockey for their performance during the 2013-14 campaign. Forward Cody Wydo was named to the All-AHC First Team while goaltender Terry Shafer was named to the All-AHC Third Team.

LYNCH LEADS BRAINY BUNCHNative Pittsburgher Zac Lynch not only won RMU’s Most Improved Player award, he also was named to the Capital One Academic All-America Third Team, a first for the men’s hockey program. The engineering major posted a 4.0 grade-point average in 2013-14. As a team, the Colonials placed a league-leading 25 players on the AHC all-academic team, the third year in a row they led the league.

IZYK KEEPS COLLEC TINGAfter winning the final two conference Goalie of the Week honors for 2013-14, as he posted a .941 save percentage during the Colonials’ run to the Atlantic Hockey title, sophomore goalie Dalton Izyk earned two of the first three such prizes in 2014-15. Izyk recorded two shutouts in his first three starts, giving him a sparkling .990 save percentage over that span.

T HE CAPTAIN AND HIS LIEU T ENAN T SHeading into the program’s 11th season, head coach Derek Schooley turned to senior forward Cody Wydo to lead the squad. Scott Jacklin, David Rigatti and Tyson Wilson were appointed as Wydo’s assistant captains.

UNLOADING ON OPPOSING GOALIESLinemates Zac Lynch and Cody Wydo shot themselves into the Robert Morris record book last sea-son. Lynch had the program’s single-season record for shots with 159 while Wydo trailed him by five with 154 shots, the second-highest total in a single season.

SHAFER STOOD TALLTerry Shafer was one of 13 goalies in the NCAA to have faced at least 1,000 shots last season. Shafer saw 1,066 shots, the eighth-highest total in the country and fourth-highest in the AHA. Shafer’s 971 saves last season ranked him eighth in the NCAA and fourth in the AHA.

YINZ PL AYIN’ HOCKEY N’AT ?As has often been the case in the history of the program, mutliple Colonials hail from the greater Pittsburgh area. Zac Lynch (Shaler) and David Rigatti (Peters Township) will carry the black and gold flag on this year’s team.

BAT T LE FOR T HE BORDERRMU’s 26-man roster is split down the middle when it comes to country of origin: 13 Americans and 13 Canadians. Ten Colonials hail from Ontario, by far the most among any state/province. Among the guys from the USA, Michigan is the most popular home state, with four natives on the team.

HIS MOST T RUST ED ASSOCIAT ESPrior to the 2013-14 season, head coach Derek Schooley elevated his two assistants, Matt Nichol-son and Mark Workman, to the status of associate head coach. Workman served as a top assistant at Brown for six seasons before coming to Robert Morris while Nicholson joined the Colonials after time at Adrian College. Both coaches are entering their sixth seasons as members of the Colonial hockey family.

H E A D C O A C H D E R E K S C H O O L E Y Head coach Derek Schooley has his Colonials primed to take the next step after a major break-through in 2013-14. Now in his 11th year in charge of RMU men’s hockey, Schooley enters the 2014-15 season with an overall record of 143-175-45. Last season, he led the Colonials to their first conference title and inaugural NCAA Tournament appearance. Following the banner year, Schooley signed a four-year contract extension that will keep him in Moon Township through the 2019-20 season. “I feel very fortunate to have started something very special from the ground up,” Schooley said. “Making the NCAA Tournament was very exciting for not only me personally, but for everyone who has been involved in the first decade of RMU hockey.” Schooley has been a college hockey coach for 17 seasons, starting with stints as an assistant at Cornell University and the Air Force Academy. In August of 2003, Schooley was named the first head varsity hockey coach in Robert Morris history. Since taking over the program, Schooley has coached 45 players who have signed pro contracts, five players that have taken part in NHL training camps and numerous others that have participat-ed in NHL developmental camps. A native of St. Louis, Mo., Schooley is married to the former Alicia Batson from Middleville, Mich. They are the proud parents of Kaitlyn, Brendan and Taylor. Prior to coming to Robert Morris, Schooley spent five years at the Air Force Academy. He was an assistant coach for four years before spending one season as an associate head coach with Air Force. Before arriving at Air Force, Schooley spent a season as an assistant coach with Cornell during the 1997-98 season. Schooley started his coaching career with the Chicago Freeze of the North American Hockey League in 1997 as an assistant coach and director of scouting. Schooley has been a head coach at the USA Hockey Select 14, 15, 16 and 17 Festivals. He also has spoken at numerous USA Hockey youth coaching clinics as well as the USA Hockey Masters Coach-ing Clinic. In August of 2002, Schooley gained international coaching experience as he an assistant coach of the United States Under-18 Select Team, which placed fifth in the Junior World Cup. Following his graduation from Western Michigan, Schooley played for the Huntington Blizzard of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) during the 1994-95 season. During the 1995-96 campaign, Schooley spent part of the season with the Blizzard before joining the Flint (Mich.) Generals, where he helped the team to a Colonial Hockey League (CoHL) regular season and playoff championship. A 1994 graduate of Western Michigan University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Commu-nications, Schooley was a four-year letterwinner as a defenseman with the Broncos. He tallied 23 assists and 27 total points as a senior, when he led Western Michigan with a plus-minus rating of plus-22 and won the team’s Grinder of the Year award. The 1921 Club is the official fundraising organization of Robert Morris University Athletics.

The generous gifts received from club members allow us to provide scholarship opportunities to deserving student-athletes and athletic programs, helping to guide RMU’s teams to new levels of athletic and academic excellence.

These gifts change our students’ lives. When you show your support by joining the 1921 Club, you help us provide the things our athletes need to succeed, like new equipment and uniforms, better facilities, training programs, and more.

Benefits of membership include access to premium hospitality areas at athletic events, opportunities to sit in premium seating, special invitations to athletic and university events as well as direct access to coaches, teams and experiences.

Members get all of the above while directly supporting student-athletes in their educational and athletic pursuits. Visit www.RMU.edu/Athletics/1921Club for more information!
