About 95 percent of theapricots grown in the U.S.come from California. Manydifferent varieties grow inCalifornia, each with specialcharacteristics.

The most prevalent varietiesare the Poppys, Pattersons,Blenheims, Tiltons, andCastlebrites. The seasonusually runs from Maythrough July.

Look for fairly firm, smooth, plump, well-formed fruit thathas an orange-yellow toorange color. If the fruit ishard and tinged with green itwont develop its full flavor.Fully ripe fruit is soft to thetouch, full of juice, andshould be eaten as soon aspossible. More here..

    Market - ChefAnna Buss

Kohlrabi, amember of thebrassica family,is one of thosevegetables at the farmersmarket that people tend tolook and think what amI supposed to do with this? Idont even know where to

start. In contrast to itsperplexing appearance, preparing kohlrabi is actuallyvery simple.

The flavor is mild anddelicious; it tastes like themarriage of cabbage and

broccoli with alittle bit moresweetness. Themiddle is crispand hydratingwhich makes it

easy to enjoy raw. You canalso pure, roast, or sautkohlrabi. Dont forget toblanch the leaves and addthem to your dish for more

    kohlrabi goodness.

Next time you are at thefarmers market make it apoint to try somethingdifferent, you may juststumble on your new favoritevegetable!

"The changing of the seasonsprovides us with the uniqueopportunity to buy a varietyof fantastic foods that areonly available during thatseason. Seasonal foods offera natural diversity that weshould take advantage ofwhen eating holistically forboth our health and thehealth of our planet. There is

nothing better than eating ajuicy organic summer peach,vine-ripe heirloom tomato, orsweet strawberry grown by alocal farmer that you knowby name."*

The best thing about summerproduce is that you will findvarieties of fruits andvegetables you won't find inthe grocery store! Many ofthese old heirloom varietiesdo not travel well andtherefore are found at thelocal level. They were notbred to travel thousands ofmiles! Blenheim apricots area prime example of produce

that is found locally. Manytypes of heirloom tomatoesor interesting summersquash have varieties bestpurchased and eaten locally. So get out there and trysome yummy heirloomproduce with honest-to-goodness flavor!
