    Cookin' the Market

Summer is here and that means one of the world'smost loved fruits is readily available at your farmersmarket.

Tomatoes are a wonderfully versatile fruit (yes, fruit!)that can be enjoyed fresh, cooked into a sauce, canned, or dried. One reason tomatoes taste so goodis because they contain a substance called glutamate.Glutamate is a natural part of protein-containing food. It

is what gives tomato sauce its mouth-watering savory flavor.

You will find the sweetest and most nutritionally dense tomatoes duringtheir peak seasons from July through September at your local farmersmarket. Choose from many colors, shapes, and sizes. Eat them whole, mix them in a caprese salad, make a bruschetta, or enjoy a cooling

gazpacho. Or check out our Fresh Tomato Sauce with Angel Hair Pasta.

Look for lots of cooking tips and tricks on the Cookin' the MarketFacebook page!

Fresh Approach providesprescription vouchers for freshfruits and vegetables tolow-income families at theseclinics. During their bi-weeklyclinic visits participants alsoattend an interactive nutritioneducation lesson and receive BMImeasurements. The goal is toshow that increasing fresh fruitand vegetable consumption leads

    to health benefits.

Many participants have begunredeeming their vouchers at localmarkets: about fifteen familiesredeemed vouchers at the AlumRock market alone the week theyreceived their vouchers, apromising indicator of the powerof programs such as VeggieRx toincrease healthful food access.

Farmers, clinicians, communitypartners, staff, and participantsare all vital to program success.Volunteers who could assist withVietnamese or Spanish translation
