Introduction: Leonardo Network

• An international network of artists, scientists and engineers, created in 1967 in Paris, France.

• Supported by two non profit organisations:– Association Leonardo, France– Leonardo/ISAST: San Francisco, USA.

• Two purposes: – To document and make visible the work of artists

involved with contemporary science and new technologies

– To stimulate collaborations between artists, scientists and engineers

in companies

• Identify and stimulate collaboration opportunities, exchanges

• Initial Collaboration being formalised with Artnodes, Open University of Catalonia, Barcelona re multi-lingual publication

Regional Frameworks for partnerships

• “Beyond Productivity” report ( W Mitchell, MIT) US National Research Council Report.

• Identifies “ Information Technology and Creative Practices “ (ITCP) as a source of economic development within “knowledge society”

• Insists on importance of “regional clusters” defined by connectivity:– Mixture of local, geographically defined, and strong

collaborations with distant nodes facilitated by information technology

• Need to design in the mix of “on line” and “face to face” interaction.

Context of Master Class Development

• Bottom up definition, build on actual needs; Long term view ( more than 10 years). UNESCO Digiarts now has several proposals from within the arab world to host masterclasses; Start somewhere

• Segment the customers: educators, creators, researchers,

• Problem of Sustainability: Institutional Frameworks, art/technology poses specific problems of mismatch of institutional structures and rapidly developing inter-disciplinary practice– Master Class topics should opportunistically respond to identified real

needs. Not duplication existing on line instruction.

• Need to work in “ on line” collaboration; Technology needs may drive selection of host organisations. There exist a number of strong possible partners within the region.– Possible need for an e-learning working group

Other Models

• Planetary Collegium:– Ph D Level– Host university ( Plymouth Univ, UK) grants for PhD students

resident elsewhere• Eg Node in Zurich• Combination of on line sessions and physical sessions hosted by

different institutions internationally.

• UOC Barcelona: Pau Alsina Gonzalez; Open University Athens: Dimitris Charitos and others presented here

• Global Threads Faculty: University of Maine, D Foresta. Team teaching.

• Existing University on line programs coupled to physical masterclasses
