FAIIILY OF DE PRIDIAS alias PRIDEAUX.

The name and family of Prideaux is of great aotiquity in Corns;all. Soon after theI\crman Contluest we find the familv seated at Prideaur Castle iu the parish of Lrrxullion, and some have attributed to it a British origin.r The first of the name of whom webave any reeord is Paganus, ,rr Pagln, Predieux wbo in the petligree registered in theHeralds' ('ollege is described as " Pagan Prideaus, Lord of Prideur: in the Conquest time."From him the third iu descent was \icholas Predieux. Lord of Predeaurr: who, in additiouto a son Richard. is stated in an old family pedigree, to have bad a son called Hickedonor Herdon' trsia brother of the said Richard' from thom, accordiug to familr pedigrees,Prideaus of Orchardon descended; but this is manifestly incorrect, for it appears fromrecord eridence that Geoffry de Pridvas married tlre beiress of Orcharton, for iu 1220 afine was levied iu which Alina who was the wife of Jobn Orcherton was petitioner andGeoffr_v de Pridyes and Isabella his wit'e, b-v Reginald' de Pridyas as attornev for the saidIsabella, of the third part of two parts of one Knight's fee, .te., in Orchertou, and thethird part of two partr of one Knight's fee in demesne. and the third part of two partsof tbe services of two Knights, &c., in Brethok (.Brodoke), in Cornrvall, rrhich Alinaclaimed as of dower of the gift of the said John sometime her husband, and she remiserland quitclaimed her whole rigbt in the same to the said Geoffry and Isabella and theheirs of the said Isabella for ever.o

The Heralds' Yisitation of 1620 (Harl. IISS. 1080. fo. 412b.) commenees the pedigreeof Prideaux of Orcbarton with Sir Riehard Prideaux (described as of Orcharton) saiti tobe the father of Sir Geoffrv Piideaux of Orcharton. 1\'e tbink that Sir Richard iserroneouslv described as 6'of Orcharton " for there sas rro Richard of that plaee until1408, and we beliere the former to be identical with Richard Prideaur, who is showu inthe authorised Yisitation Pedigree (Heralds' Coll.) to have died in 1250. The dates willagree very rell.

r Polshele Eist. of Corar.' Vol. ii.' 61. \l-hitaker.3 This l(ichol:rs is stated to hase died in 1169, but re finil h fl82 the Sheriff of Corrrall accounted for

3 !Ia.v aot "IficLeilon" hase beea a corruption of "Orcherdoa" sual Eeralou of "Eickeilou.r It rhould be noteil that in 1218, Sir Thomas fls pri.linq, f,nt., was plaeed in lgmnindsl in ilefault of issuo

of John B,:rilI and Agoes his wife, izlar alro, in tfie manor of Tl-olffion co. Corasall (Ped. Ifi!. Diy. Cor.3rd IIen.
