Ramakrishna Mission VidyapithDeoghar, Jharkhand - 814 112
INTRODUCTION
The idea of Ramakrishna Mission Vidyapith, Deoghar was first conceived by Swami
Turiyananda, a disciple of Sri Ramakrishna, who inspired Brahmachari Vidyachaitanya to
start a school in order to implement the man-making ideas of Swami Vivekananda.
Accordingly, Br. Vidyachaitanya rented a small house at Mihijam in May 1922 and started
a school with three day-scholars. Eight months later, in January 1923, he left Mihijam and
came to Deoghar with twelve students. Staying initially in a house on Rohini Road for one
and a half months, he subsequently shifted to another place on the Kachahari Road.
Thereafter, in mid 1924, he once again shifted the school to the Khema Villa and the Bama
Villa in Deoghar.
Meanwhile, the work of procuring a plot of land for Vidyapith went on in full swing. On
its accomplishment, the portion of the school located at Khema Villa was removed in 1925
to a couple of newly constructed houses, keeping the other portion at Bama Villa for a while
more. Finally, when Vidyapith was totally shifted in its new premises, Swami Shivanandaji
Maharaj, the then President of the Ramakrishna Order paid a visit and inaugurated the
school ceremonially on January 19, 1926, the holy Saraswati Puja day. Shivanandaji Maharaj
was deeply impressed by Vidyapith’s dedicated services and said: “I visualize a great future
for Vidyapith. I am convinced that great work will be done through this institution.” His vision
has indeed come true.
To shape Vidyapith from scratch, Brahmachari Vidyachaitanya had to struggle hard.
Swami Turiyananda appreciated him wholeheartedly for his back-breaking efforts and
affectionately called Vidyapith “A Brahmacharya Vidyalaya”. Swami Saradananda, the then
General Secretary of the Ramakrishna Mission and a disciple of Sri Ramakrishna, extended
all possible support during Vidyapith’s formative years.
Brahmachari Vidyachaitanya became a Sannyasin in due course and received the
monastic name of Swami Sadbhavananda. In his first report as the Secretary of Vidyapith,
he wrote: “Living in touch with sannyasins, the boys breathe here in an atmosphere of
sacrifice and purity. The habit of self-help which strengthens the character of a man and
makes him fit for the struggle of life is also carefully cultivated in the boys. By locating the
school at a healthy place and by giving boys proper physical training, the institution aims
at the improvement in their health. In short, it affords to its boys secular culture based on
spirituality.”
Vidyapith has been relentlessly following the principles of Swami Sadbhavananda laid
down at the outset. It trains boys academically, intellectually, physically, aesthetically, morally
and spiritually. In other words, Vidyapith is committed to implementing Swami Vivekananda’s
“Man-making and Character-building Education”.

Deoghar
Deoghar is a well known place of worship. It is a place of Lord Shiva with an ancient
temple of Baba Baidyanath. It is also a Shaktipith which is believed to have been harbouring
the ‘heart’ of Goddess Sati.
Sri Ramakrishna, Sri Sarada Devi and Swami Vivekananda made pilgrimages to
Deoghar at different times. Deoghar therefore has a special significance in the history of
the Ramakrishna Movement. The ‘educational work’ of Ramakrishna Mission began from
here formally, with the opening of the Vidyapith school.
A Premier Institution
A small school initially, Vidyapith has now grown into a premier institution of the country
with many other activities added to it. This has been possible because of the indefatigable
labour and the persistent prayers of the monks, workers and devotees of this centre of the
Ramakrishna Mission.
Since a good deal of spade-work by its pioneers had gone into its beginning, Vidyapith
stands on a solid foundation and eventually steers past many challenges. It has grown from
strength to strength, creating ripples in society.
Nine Decades
Vidyapith has now completed ninety two years of its existence. It is, therefore, rich in
experience and expertise. Witnessing ups and downs within this period, it has had slices
of joy and ounces of sorrow during this period. A defining moment, however, arrived when
it was conferred the “National Award” for outstanding work in the field of child welfare by
the Government of India, in 1986. In recognition of its excellence, there are otherwise,
accolades galore, for the exceptional performances in different fields of activity.
Vidyapith Today
The school is affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi. It had
510 students on its roll from classes VI to XII during 2013-14. Its residential section is divided
into 16 Dhams (houses) named after the direct disciples of Sri Ramakrishna.
Vidyapith lays emphasis on value-based education. Boys, along with their daily lessons
in academic students, receive instructions in Indian Culture & Value Education (ICVE). They
attend morning and evening prayers in the shrine everyday. And, if need be, innovations
in their training are also made, keeping the requirements of the changing time in view. In
fine, for a comprehensive growth of boys, efforts are made to combine the modern method
of education with the traditional method of Gurukula system.

their items beautifully. We have also arranged a Mobile Exhibition Van from 22 – 24 August
2013.
Value Education
Vidyapith lays emphasis on value-based education. Boys, along with their daily lessons
in academic studies, receive instructions in Indian Culture & Value Education (ICVE).
Discipline is considered the cardinal virtue in Vidyapith. It expects the students to be honest,
obedient, respectful, dutiful and sympathetic. On top of all, it wants that they should have
love for the nation and its less-fortunate citizens.
An atmosphere of devotion and dedication, the Vidyapith holds, is absolutely necessary
for proper education. Congregational prayers, devotional songs and fortnightly Ramnam
Sankirtan in the campus create the right ambience for the purpose. Religious festivals viz.
Janmashtami, Shiva Ratri, Holi, Sri Sri Saraswati Puja, Viswakarma Puja, birthdays of the
Holy Trio, are celebrated. Boys take part in the shrine duties and ceremonial worships on
various occasions.
The students clean their hostels in the morning. They practise Vedic Chanting regularly.
Hanuman Chalisa is also recited in the hostels. As an auspicious beginning to Vidyapith life,
Vidyarthivrata Sankalpa with Vedic Homa is performed every year for the new entrants to
classes VI and XI.
As a part of moral and value based education in Vidyapith, there is a tradition of awarding
prizes for Best Inculcation of Values, Best Behaviour and Best Leadership to the boys of
classes X and XII. This year the prizes for Best Inculcation of Values, Best Behaviour and
Best Leadership in class X were given respectively to Aditya Vats, Aditya Kashyap and
Sachin Vats and in class XII, to Mayukh Singh, Vibhaswan Roy Choudhury and Vipul Kumar
Mishra.
The purpose of the education process of Vidyapith is to achieve a comprehensive
growth in the students. It believes youths academically accomplished, intellectually sharp,
compassionately sensitive, physically active, morally sound and spiritually evolved are the
real assets of the nation.

Physical Education
Boys receive training from qualified physical instructors who train students under the
supervision of the Chief Warden. Of late ‘Physical Education’ has been introduced as an

regularly in drills and games, using two well-equipped indoor and multi-gym facilities as well
as 21 playgrounds in the campus.. Tournaments are organized for football, cricket, table
tennis, volleyball and basketball.
Parade troops and the band party of Vidyapith keep spectators spellbound with smart
turnouts and rhythmic displays, both within Vidyapith premises and at District Parade Ground
during the Independence Day and the Republic Day celebrations. Soldiers of the Ramgarh
Cantonment (Sikh Regiment) train the boys for Parade (and Band) display. The Vidyapith

Relief Activities and Nara-Narayan Seva
As with the earilier years Vidyapith conducted blanket-distribution during 1 December
2013 to 9th January, 2014. Altogether 841 blankets were distributed among poor Santhali
people from remote villages. A total quantity of 575 Kgs. skimmed milk was distributed
among poor and needy children. More than 5000 devotees and needy people were fed
during the Nara-Narayana Seva on the occasions of Sri Sarada Devi’s Tithi Puja, Swami
Vivekananda’s Tithi Puja, Mahastami Day, Saraswati Puja and on Sri Ramakrishna’s Tithi
Puja.
Dairy, Bakery and Garden
The Vidyapith Dairy has a total of 124 cows with an average yield of 474 ltrs. per day
(2013-14). Almost the whole of the milk produced is consumed by the inmate students and
residential staff. The dairy has mechanised milking facility and the cowdung produce obtained
is used to run bio-gas plants, used in kitchen-cooking.
Vidyapith also has a huge garden spread across the sprawling campus. In addition to
flower plants of various types—there are vegetable and fruit trees, the majority of the yield
from which is consumed within the Ashrama itself. Vidyapith also has a small bakery to meet
the internal requirements of loaves, biscuits, cakes and other confectionaries.
Spots of Special Interest within Vidyapith
Museum:
Built the co-operation of National Museum, this museum of modest size comprehensibly
represents the rich heritage of India. India’s achievements in religion, arts, sciences, literatures
and other spheres through the ages have been depicted in it. An important place has been
given to the tribal cultures and lifestyles of India’s indigenous peoples, employing relevant
models, materials and images. Besides, it presents a collection of objects, photographs and
accounts of personalities connected with the development of this Institution over the decades.
There is also a section devoted to the life and contribution of Sri Sarada Devi.
Ramakrishna Darshan:
A permanent exhibition consisting of rare photographs, fibre glass relief images and
descriptions related to them, Ramakrishna Darshan is a story of Ramakrishna Movement
14
graphically said. It chronologically demonstrates the history of the Movement, showing the
roles played by Sri Ramakrishna, Sri Sarada Devi, Swami Vivekananda and his brother
disciples. It lays emphasis on two visits of Swami Vivekananda to the West, his interactions
with many important people abroad and views of well known Indian thinkers influenced by
him.
Aviary:
The aviary contains some birds of uncommon varieties and coloured plumages, such
as the Love Bird, Speaking Moyna, Wild Peacock and Kakatuah. They are being provided
with natural habitats in big cages. A few white hares are also kept in a separate enclosure.
It a piece of garden with birds, flowers, trees and cactuses.
Swimming Pool:
The swimming pool is a comparatively recent addition to Vidyapith. As stated earlier,
boys use it regularly to learn swimming from a qualified instructor. Its water is being maintained
clean, free from germs and contaminations by proper technology.
