HOW TO MAKE A RIVET
![Page 2: Riveting Basics](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022051207/541e314e7bef0ab8718b45e4/html5/thumbnails/2.jpg)
Mark holes with Sharpie.
![Page 3: Riveting Basics](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022051207/541e314e7bef0ab8718b45e4/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
Place piece on surface plate and position center punch on a
mark.

Tap center punch very lightly with a leather mallet.
![Page 5: Riveting Basics](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022051207/541e314e7bef0ab8718b45e4/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Choose a drill bit and wire according to the equivalency chart.
![Page 6: Riveting Basics](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022051207/541e314e7bef0ab8718b45e4/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Measure the wire with a B&S Gauge, by laying the wire in the slot, not the holes.
![Page 7: Riveting Basics](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022051207/541e314e7bef0ab8718b45e4/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Prepare for drilling by wearing safety glasses and tying hair back, when necessary.
![Page 8: Riveting Basics](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022051207/541e314e7bef0ab8718b45e4/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Turn on the drill press and put beeswax on the drill bit.
![Page 9: Riveting Basics](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022051207/541e314e7bef0ab8718b45e4/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Drill slowly, so as not to break the fragile bit. Hold the metal tightly with
your left hand.
![Page 10: Riveting Basics](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022051207/541e314e7bef0ab8718b45e4/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
After drilling, remove burs by taking a bigger bit, sticking it in the hole and
twisting it with your fingers.
![Page 11: Riveting Basics](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022051207/541e314e7bef0ab8718b45e4/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
After drilling all holes in the top piece, mark one hole in the bottom piece. Using a sharp scriber, scratch a mark through the
top piece into the bottom piece.
![Page 12: Riveting Basics](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022051207/541e314e7bef0ab8718b45e4/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
If a Sharpie fits through the hole, the bottom piece could be marked that
way. Mark one hole only.
![Page 13: Riveting Basics](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022051207/541e314e7bef0ab8718b45e4/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Center punch that mark.
![Page 14: Riveting Basics](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022051207/541e314e7bef0ab8718b45e4/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Drill that one hole in the bottom piece.
![Page 15: Riveting Basics](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022051207/541e314e7bef0ab8718b45e4/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Take a bigger drill bit, put it in the back side of the hole, and twist to remove the bur.
![Page 16: Riveting Basics](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022051207/541e314e7bef0ab8718b45e4/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
File one end of the rivet wire flat, with a hand file.
![Page 17: Riveting Basics](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022051207/541e314e7bef0ab8718b45e4/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
Place the wire through both pieces and cut with flush cutters. The wire should protrude
approximately 1mm or less on both sides.
![Page 18: Riveting Basics](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022051207/541e314e7bef0ab8718b45e4/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
File the second end of the wire flat with a hand file. Don’t scratch your piece.
![Page 19: Riveting Basics](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022051207/541e314e7bef0ab8718b45e4/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
If the rivet falls out, use the parallel jaw pliers to hold it and put it back in place.
![Page 20: Riveting Basics](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022051207/541e314e7bef0ab8718b45e4/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
Poke a hole in a piece of masking tape.
![Page 21: Riveting Basics](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022051207/541e314e7bef0ab8718b45e4/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
Place the tape over the rivet to protect the project from being damaged.
![Page 22: Riveting Basics](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022051207/541e314e7bef0ab8718b45e4/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
Place the cardboard “spacer” under the metal. Make sure the rivet it in the “hole” of
the spacer. Tap lightly with the flat end of the riveting hammer.
![Page 23: Riveting Basics](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022051207/541e314e7bef0ab8718b45e4/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
Flip the piece over. Without using the spacer, tap the rivet with the flat end of the
riveting hammer.
Voila! You’re finished.
