Based on the collective experience of a number ofour employees in the global world ofhydrographic surveying, Survey Operations havechosen to specialise in two specific areas of waterbourn survey. Initially, as a consequence of ourlong standing contractual obligations to clientssuch as North West Water, Pioneer and Tilcon,the company has concentrated on the inlandlakes, lagoons and reservoirs of the UK. Thisactivity lead to an increasing involvement withflood defence based schemes and river surveys.

Predominantly involved in the provision ofsurvey data for river modelling, numerous riversand watercourses have been completed during thepast ten years with individual lengths rangingfrom a few hundred metres up to over 80km.

Due to extensive resources, each project candirectly call upon whatever personnel andequipment are required to ensure success.In addition to our experienced river surveyors,specialist confined spaces teams are available forculverted regions and GPS equipped teams foroverall survey control, river datum unification,National Grid (OSGB) co-ordination and leveltransfer in remote surveying areas.Survey access is also enabled in difficult areas by avariety of water and land based means including

low draught, two men 'wet bikes' and fourwheel drive 'quad' motorcycles.

Fully conversant with EA based specificationsand a variety of consultants' digital inputformats, Survey Operations have developed ahighly streamlined and automated approach tothe production of contract deliverables. Usingour own, internally developed software, the fielddata which has been directly logged on theriverbank automatically generates eachindividual river cross section and adds theappropriate elements to the combined reachlong section. Additional software functions dealwith crossing structures and these are furthersupported by non-contact photographictechniques for major bridges and viaducts.Combining this high degree of automation witha progressive river survey approach ensures thatthe final survey information is released on areach by reach basis in the fastest possible time.
