Welcome to our 22nd Annual Sale. We’re optimistic about the beef cattle business as we begin 2012. According to the folks who closely watch the trends, prices are high across all segments of the cattle industry; demand for

beef remains strong with no expansion in the cattle herd. There is a general consensus that beef prices should remain strong through the foreseeable future. The way we see it, better bull genetics makes for better calves and greater profit potential.

Our “Built to Work” bulls are a result of a breeding philosophy we have been dedicated to for 40 years. We want to produce bulls that sire calves that will give you the least amount of hassle and most pounds to sell. Depending on the makeup of your herd, using our Purebred or SimAngus bulls allows you to take advantage of hybrid vigor with added pounds on your calves and the associated complementary traits of enhanced carcass qualities, cowherd longevity and cowherd increased productivity. We have a good selection this year of 67 SimAngus, 31 Simmental, and 3 Angus bulls.

We will be selling more bulls this year primarily due to an increase in ET bulls. Many of these will be from the same cow family as Club King. Club King is now number 4 for registrations the past year in the ASA. The bulls were tested for homozygous black if we didn’t know from the pedigree. We ended up with 88 homozygous black bulls. We also have 2 red bulls this year for the first time in several years. They are non-diluters and will work on black or red cows. All the bulls are out of polled parents, the ones marked Homozygous Polled have proven homozygous parents on both sides of the pedigree. We will also be selling 21 fall yearling bulls. They ran on grass all summer, are stout and ready for heavy use.

Our bulls have been developed in large lots to ensure sound feet and legs while giving them plenty of exercise. Our customers from western Kansas and Colorado appreciate the soundness and condition of the bulls. Yearling weights for the spring bulls in the catalog are based off weights taken January 3. All bulls will be semen tested, scrotal mea-sured and ultra sounded before the sale. Results will be posted on our web site as they become available and will be at the sale.

Our sale will be broadcast live on LiveAuctionsTV. You can go online and bid during the sale. Directions on how to do this are in the catalog or give us a call if you need some help. If you prefer, you can be on the phone during the sale to bid, or have us bid on a bull for you. If you’re concerned about buying an animal “sight unseen”, please remember that if you’re not satisfied with the bull we’ll return your money. It’s just that simple. SATISFACTION GUARANTEEFull satisfaction guarantee for every animal that sells. Every bull sells with a “First Breeding Sea-son Guarantee". VOLUME DISCOUNTAnyone who purchases 3 bulls is eligible for a 3% discount, 4 bulls - 4%, and 5 or more is eligible for a 5% discount. .

TRUCKINGFree Delivery on bulls to customers within 300 miles of Manhattan. If you are located farther than 300 miles we will make arrangements and pay for half the expense elsewhere in the con-tinental United States. We will guarantee your transportation costs do not exceed $300 per head. $100 discount if you haul your purchased bulls home sale day.

HERD HEALTHAll cattle will sell with proper interstate health papers. All sale cattle have been vaccinated with IBR, BVD, P13, Vibro Letpo 5, eight-way black-leg and poured with Ivomec. All bulls have been fertility checked. All sell guaranteed breeders. Scrotal measurements will be available sale day and on our website. All bulls tested BVD negative. CATTLE CARE OPTIONRiver Creek Farms will take the bulls home and continue to develop them until April 1st, free of charge. We will then make arrangments with you to deliver the bull(s).

RETAINED SEMEN INTERESTRiver Creek Farms will retain 1/3 semen in-terest on all bulls in the offering. You will own full possession and salvage value of the bull. In the event that semen sales become a real-ity on your purchase, River Creek Farms will retain the rights to 1/3 of semen sales rev-enue. River Creek Farms retained semen inter-est remains if the bull is sold to a third party.

BULL DEVELOPMENTWe performance test the bulls on a ration de-signed for 3.0 pounds per day gain and in lots one-half mile long to ensure adequate exercise. We believe this adequately conditions the bulls for breeding with sound feet and legs while en-abling them to exhibit their gain ratio. You may notice the fall bulls have lower adjusted yearling weights than the spring bulls. The fall bulls were run on grass last summer without supplementa-tion from May 1 to September 1. Consequently, their yearling weights, WDA, and ribeye areas are smaller than the spring bulls. You should not use the data to compare the two groups of bulls but use it to compare bulls within each age group.

Every bull in this year’s sale was developed in lots one-half mile long to ensure adequate exercise, an athletic frame and structural correctness. These bulls are not fat, they are ready to go to work in any environmental condition.

CALVING EASEExpressed as a percent of unassisted births when used on heifers. The higher the calving ease EPD the better. For the PB bulls we consider a score of +10 or better safe to use on heifers.

BIRTH WEIGHTExpressed in pounds and predicts the average difference that can be expected in an animal’s offspring when compared to the average.

WEANING & YEARLING WEIGHT Both of these EPDs assist in predicting differ-ences in pounds of growth between animals. Weaning Weight predicts differences in growth at 205 days of age and Yearling Weight is ex-pressed at 365 days of age.

MATERNAL CALVING EASEPredicts the average ease with which a sire’s daughters will calve as first-calf heifers.

MATERNAL MILKReflects the average difference in weaning weight of a bull’s grandprogeny because of his daughters’ milking ability. Cattle with higher Milk EPDs often take more feed rescources to manage.

MATERNAL WEANING WEIGHT Expressed in pounds. MWW reflects the ge-netic influence of a bull on his grandprogenys’ weaning weight when compared to the average. CARCASS WEIGHTExpresses the difference in pounds of car-cass weight at 475 days of age. Bulls with higher carcass weight EPDs will pro-duce cattle with larger hot carcass weights. YIELD GRADEPredicts the average difference in Yield Grade score that can be expected between the progeny of the bull. A lower number predicts a lower Yield Grade score.

RIBEYE AREAPredicts the average difference in square inches of ribeye area.

MARBLINGIndicates the amount of intra-muscular fat. A higher number will indicate a high amount of IMF, and a higher quality grade score.

BACK FATIndicates the amount of fat over the 12th & 13th rib. A higher number indicates more back fat.

ALL PURPOSE INDEXEvaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd, with a portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold by grade and yield. TERMINAL INDEXEvaluates sires for use on Angus cows with off-spring put on feed and sold by grade and yield.

Using API & TI

Just as with regular EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another.

For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a +50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000).

The families’ interest in cattle began in 1891 with Sherman Mertz, who fed cattle and sheep in Wabaunsee County. His son, Harold A. Mertz, started his operation three miles west on the land that is now headquarters for the farm. Today, the business is continuing with third generation Harold D. and Jeanne Mertz, fourth generation Joe and Kim Mertz, and Bob and Mary Mertz as operating partners. The farm headquarters is located approximately nine miles east of Manhattan along K18, in the Kaw Valley River bottom. Our main crops are corn and soybeans, with some wheat and alfalfa on leased and owned cropland. Most of this cropland is in the river valley with some upland ground. We do some irrigation with center pivots and flood irrigation. We graze the cowherd during the summer on Flint Hills grass in the hills south of the farm. The cowherd graze the cornstalks in the valley during the fall and winter.

River Creek Farms is a diversified family operation owned and operated by the Mertz families.
