DMAC Annual Picnic by Jim Forthman: The DMAC picnic was the best ever!!! Weather was absolutely perfect with temperatures in the high 70's, sunshine, no wind and NO BUGS. About 31 people showed up to be fed Hamburgers, Hot Dogs, and Chicken all cooked by the master chefs Tom J and Joy. Tom and Joy really out did themselves in the food prep area. We had onions, lettuce, tomatoes, and some hotdog sauce that was delicious. They had it going and nothing was left out. Members brought potato salad, a pasta salad, and cole slaw along with cakes and cookies including Banana Pudding, a Strawberry cake and a Peanut butter cake. Oh ymmm and I am sure I left some things out. Chris R's sister provided a Tuperware drawing door prize and I think Jim R's daughter in-law won the prize. Thanks to all who helped make this a success. Just about every one flew at least one flight and we were treated to some 3D flying by Chris R. Others flying included Jim R and F, David P, Hunter M, Tony C, Bill H, Jeff H, and Stuart S. Chris R and Hunter M along with Mark M flew their helicopters. As dark approached, 5 lighted wings ran the gauntlet and it was neat. One pilot had his plane going down the runway about 2' off the ground and really nailed the center of the gauntlet and more than once. It is really neat to see 5 lighted wings come flying down the runway. Only one plane really got in the trees and none in the corn. Thanks to everyone for making this such a big success. We also voted to have Tom in charge of picnic and weather again for next year or maybe again this fall.

Mark Mullen's comments: I want to Thank everyone for cooking and bringing out food for the picnic. We had a great time and couldn’t have asked for better weather for flying. Night flying set a new DMAC record of 5 Assassins in the air at the same time mixing it up. Also lots of Gauntlet formation runs in the late evening. It was great fun! Mark

Former past President and club member, Lamar Blair passed away 6-9-12:

Lamar Blair, 58, died June 9, 2012. He is survived by his wife, Vickie Jarrett Blair. Hartselle Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Lamar Blair was a very active member of the Decatur Model Airplane Club(DMAC), Decatur Al for many years. He was instrumental in the acquisition and development of the Flint flying site and devoted many hours of his own time into the supervision of it's construction. He was a past President of DMAC and served as such for several years. He was also an active pattern flyer and at one time was ranked nationally and sponsored by one of the leading radio manufacturers. Lamar also was Associate Vice President for District V in the AMA for a number of years during the time Tony Stillman was District V President. Due to his declining health he has not been active in the DMAC for the last 2 or 3 years. He will be missed. Jim Forthman, PresidentDecatur Model Airplane ClubDecatur Al

East Highland Baptist Church Air ShowJim Forthman, Al Gomes, and Mark Blaske put on an airplane demonstration and air show for the Vacation Bible School at East Highland Baptist Church in Hartselle Al on June 15th 2012. It was pretty windy and it was rather difficult to fly our foamies in the wind but we all flew a couple of flights. Jim's Bipe flew about the best since it is a little heavier. We also taxied the All American P-51 around on the ground and then let the kids touch and feel the planes along with a lot of flying and airplane talk. Mike McLamb, a former member helped us along with Pastor Jason to ensure the kids were kept at a safe distance and our compliments to how well behaved these kids were in observing the location "do not pass line".

Sky Games:

Frequent Farm Flyers by Bob Murray: 5/29/12: I went to the field early this morning, so I could see Al fly. He is usually finished before I get there. Can't understand how some people can get up so early. Al flew his little electric Cub and it does very well. He kept it pretty close in because of the corn. That stuff scares the heck out of all of us. James Brown drove up next. I flew my big electric Senorita last Friday and it didn't seem right. I wanted Jim to try it out, but it was only 7:30 and to early to fly my glow plane, so I took it off. It flew OK, but I was very uncomfortable with it. Seemed I would turn one way and the first thing I knew it was going the other way. I landed, before I crashed it. A new club member, David Pigg, and his little boy came next. He made several flights with his electric Alpha. He was quite high on his first flight and the battery must have slid back, cause he said it was tail heavy. He cut the power off completely and it took forever to come down so he could land. Must have been in a thermal. That plane seems to glide forever. It finally go to eight O'clock and I made two flights with my trusty Easy Sport. That plane is a joy to fly. Jim came about eight and he and James both flew their Four Star Sixty's. Needless to say, they both flew great. I told Jim about my Seniorita and he had me get it together again and he flew it. The ailerons are ultra-sensitive and Jim had some trouble flying it.

Page 6: River City RC Flyer · River City RC Flyer j j j j j j j j Decatur Model Airplane Club, Decatur, Alabama The Second Oldest Charted Club ... There is a stick and walkie talkies to

I must tame it down before I fly it again. I can't understand it, because the wing is from my first plane and I never had any trouble with it. The weather the next few days looks good. I think I will be there every day, but not much before eight. Tomorrow I plan to bring my Easy Sport 60 and my Mod Star 40.

5/30/12: What a wonderful morning to fly and we had a large turn-out of fliers. When I got there Al, James, Chuck, Patrick and Don were there and Jim came a little later. No body was flying and it was not quite eight, but by the time I put the wing on my Easy Sport 60 and fueled it up, I was ready to go. My take-off was OK, but somehow the plane had gotten very out-of-trim. I was having some trouble and Jim trimmed it out for me. I then had three good flights with it. I saw Don and Patrick fly their T-28's and Don made several flights with his big Four Star 60. Only saw Al fly his Miss 2, but he had at least six planes in his truck. Chuck was flying his Aero Star. That was the first plane I ever built. It's a shame they don't make it any more. James flew his Sr. Falcon and had trouble with the muffler coming apart. He wired it together and was able to make a second flight. Jim flew his Four Star 40 and tried to teach me to program my new computer radio. It's a bugger and I must just sit down and study the manual. No one crashed into the corn and we all had a great time. The weather Thursday and Friday looks good and I plan to fly both days.Bob

5/31/12: It was very cloudy this morning and it got a bit breezy. We only had five people flying today. Al, James, Jim, Don and myself. Al had flown all his planes early, but I did see him fly the Jitter-bug or June-bug or something-bug. Patrick had been out there earlier also flying his T-28 and SuperCub but left before I got there. James made several flights with his Sr. Falcon. He found a new bolt for the muffler and it worked fine. James only knows one speed when flying. Full throttle. Don brought out his Ugly Stick and it flew well. Jim had his big Mig with him, but had nose wheel trouble and didn't get it in the air. I brought my Mid Star 40, which I hadn't flown for awhile. The first flight seemed OK for several minutes, but then the engine died when I was pretty far out. I knew I couldn't make a normal approach, so I just headed for the field hoping not to go into the corn. It looked good and if it had been several days ago I would have made it. It just clipped the corn next to the run-way. No damage, so I took off again. The plane didn't seem to have much power and would just barely do a loop at full throttle. I brought it in and thought it was going to be a perfect landing, but my depth perception must be off. My wing clipped the first row of corn and it cart wheeled. Only damage was a broken prop. Put a new prop on and tried to adjust the engine. Took off and it acted just the same. Very little power. Jim came over and took the radio. He had the same trouble. He landed it, but must have hit a pot hole, cause the main wheels sheared off. That was enough flying for me for today. Looks like storms coming in today and tomorrow. I don't think anyone plans to fly tomorrow. Sure hope the weather is good for the club picnic on Saturday.Bob

6/07/12: Patrick Reporting for Bob: I got there just as Al was arriving. The rabbits are taking over the road. Bob L. was already there - he'd been there since 5 something. I got out my T-28 and plugged in my battery and - NOTHING. I re-plugged the battery and did get control surfaces but no motor. (Checked it at home and I think my receiver is malfunctioning). So I did some taxi practice with my "wingless" Alpha 450. Then I decided to go ahead and fly my SuperCub - my new batteries came in and I had 4 available. Take off was fine - did some figure 8's and a few "patterns" and landed fine. Bob L. left for the day. Al flew his Leaping Lizard - he'd repaired it from Wednesday's normal landing when it did a nose flip and it broke the section between the cockpit and tail. Art showed up and flew his Wing Dragon. I flew my SuperCub a second time - had tail dragging taxi problems at first but got it in the air. Did some more figure 8's and patterns and landed fine but nosed over in a rut - no damage. James B. pulled in and he flew his aerobatic plane several times (they all look like "Edge's or Stick's"

Page 7: River City RC Flyer · River City RC Flyer j j j j j j j j Decatur Model Airplane Club, Decatur, Alabama The Second Oldest Charted Club ... There is a stick and walkie talkies to

to me). LOL Al flew his Miss 2 and Art flew his other Wind Dragon with ailerons. Bob M. showed up and started getting his plane ready. I made a pit stop in the port-a-potty and was greeted by Mr. Field Mouse, who scrambled out the back - glad he didn't show up for the picnic when the women where there. LOL Bob took off and was all out of trim and part of his leading edge monocoat decorative trim tore off - Jim F. had just pulled in and helped Bob trim it up. Jim tried to get his O.S. 90 started - he'd had trouble Wed with air in the fuel line. It still wouldn't start - guess back to the work shop. Are Electrics looking better all the time, Jim? LOL I made my third flight - no problem with taxiing this time and had a good landing even with a little cross wind. A new guy showed up, Mark Blaske. He had two Nitroplane warbirds. A HellCat and a Thunderbolt. Jim helped him by hand launching the HellCat. Jim left for the day because of the O.S. 90 problem. Mark B. flew them both - did a good job. Bob, Al and I left leaving James and Art with the new guy. I'm all charged up and ready to go tomorrow, weather permitting.

6/08/12: What a beautiful morning for flying and no one had any crashes in the corn field. I brought my two daughters with me today so they could watch Dad fly. Of course they were greatly impressed by my flying ability until Jim took off with his Four Star 60. I'm not sure which impressed them more: His stunt flying or the pretty orange plane. I kinda think it was his flying. He does much more than I even try. When I got there, Al and Patrick had been there flying their electric planes. We say Al fly his little yellow Cub. The girls were amazed how small it was. Then Patrick flew his bigger yellow Cub. It's easier to see. Both planes flew great. As we were leaving, Patrick tried to fly again, but he is still having steering problem on the ground. I made three flights with my trusty Easy Sport 40. The first two landings ended with a dead engine so I added more throttle trim and was able to taxi back after the third flight. I also had nose wheel troubles on my third flight. The nose wheel would turn side-ways. That makes it hard to take off. Finally, Jim placed the plane in the middle of the field and it took off O.K. I want to teach my daughters to fly. They have been practicing on the simulator and watching the plane on the ground when you move the sticks helped. My one daughter didn't know what ailerons were and what they did. She thought they were wires. She now knows. Jim suggested that we let him know the next time they are to be at the field and he will bring a club trainer and a buddy box and let then see what it's like to fly. They are looking forward to that. My girls were impressed by the friendliness of my flying buddies and I told them it's a great bunch of fellows and we try to help each other.Bob

6/12/12: No need for a hat to keep the sun out of your eyes this morning, but no rain. The wind got a bit gusty, but not to strong to fly. I got to the field a bit before eight. Art and Patrick were there and Jim came a little later. I didn't see Patrick fly. I think he flew his big yellow Cub, but he was unable to fly his Alpha. He repaired it yesterday, but forgot to put the battery hatch back on. He left before I flew. Art had his two Dragon Wings with him and they both flew well. I tried to fly my Dragon Wing twice several weeks ago and the ailerons are so sensitive , that I couldn't control it. I intend to change the receiver so I can use the computer radio with it. Art his his ailerons at 20% and with 40%expo. I want to try mine that way. Jim flew his Orange Four Star 60 and really put it through it's paces. He said he either has to put a new battery in it or quit using the controls so much. I brought my Cessna with flaps and had it on my new computer radio. I made the first flight with my 6 channel radio and the plane flew fine. I then asked Jim to fly it with the computer radio that I had set it on. It works fine, but I don't like the flap arrangement. With the 6 channel radio you can change the amount of flaps in the air. With the computer radio, you must put in the amount of flaps on the ground. I made three flights today. On the last one, I came in over the end of the runway and knew I was to high. I wanted to go around, but the engine died. I had no choice but to land in the trees at the East end. I flared it above the trees

Page 8: River City RC Flyer · River City RC Flyer j j j j j j j j Decatur Model Airplane Club, Decatur, Alabama The Second Oldest Charted Club ... There is a stick and walkie talkies to

and it came through with no damage. I was very surprised. Tomorrow is supposed to be better weather than today and we will probably have a good crowd.Bob

6/13/12: Another beautiful morning for flying. Al, Art, Jim and I were there this morning. I didn't see Al fly, but he had four planes by his truck and said he had flown them all. I think he gets to the field about six. I'm not normally awake at that time. Art flew his two Dragon Wings and Jim flew his Four Star 40. Jim had his engine tuned up so it looked like he had a smoke engine on it. Looked good. I flew two flights each with my Electric Senorita and my Easy Sport 60. It was a good day and no one went into the corn. Still trying to learn to use my new computer radio. The basics are easy, but things like EPA and expo need a little studying.BobDon't know how I missed Patrick on my field report this morning. He was there and remembered to bring the battery hatch cover for his electric Alpha. I saw him make two flights and he is looking like a pro with that plane. Bob

6/14/12: Another beautiful morning to fly. I took my electric Senorita and my glow Mid Star 40 with me. When I got there Al, Art and Bob Lawyer were there and had been flying their electrics. I put the wing on my Senorita and put in the battery and was ready to go. I made three flights with this plane and they were all swell, except for the landings. I was either to fast or to slow. Yesterday I came in too slow and the control surfaces didn't work. The first flight was too fast and I ended up going down the entrance road a ways rather than run into the trees and weeds. The next two landings were not much better. I just can't seem to judge my speed. I saw Al fly his Miss 2. That plane takes off in about five feet of runway. Also saw him flying his Dragon Wing. Both planes flew very well and his landing with the Dragon Wing was perfect. Bob flew his little yellow Cub. I was flying at the time, so just caught it out of the corner of my eye, but it looked pretty good. I watched Art fly both his Dragon Wings. He really likes to fly them high and slow. I noticed he had a pusher motor glider type plane, like the one I got yesterday for Fathers Day. I asked him if he was going to fly it and he said he didn't like flying it because it went so fast. As I was getting my other plane ready, I saw Al hand launching Arts plane. It took several tries, but it got into the air and seemed to be a bugger. Art got it under control, but something happened way out over the corn field and it went down. Bob and I got into my truck and drive to what we thought was the end of the road. We headed into the corn field and searched for a long time. The corn is very thick and about nine feet high. It's impossible to see very far and very easy to get lost. After 15 or 20 minutes I came back to my truck. I called for Bob, but got no answer. I was concerned that he had gotten Lost, so drove back to the field to get Al. When I got there Al And Bob were there, but no sign of Art. We were concerned that he was lost, but after awhile we saw hum coming and holding the plane up over his head. He saw a cloud that looked stationary and used it to go to the plane. He took his transmitter with him, because the motor on that plane was very loud. He kept trying to find the plane with the transmitter and finally found it. He was about six feet from the plane when he found it and still couldn't see it, but the motor let him to it. The plane dose not seem to be damaged. That was the end of flying for today. I have decided if I lose a plane in the corn, I will just write it off.Bob

6/15/12: Oh, what a morning this has been. I got to the field about eight and Al and Art were there. The wind had come up pretty strong and they didn't want to fly their electrics. I had charged three batteries for my Senorita and they were all sitting on my work table at home. No problem. I brought my Mid Star 40 that I couldn't seem to get much power out of the other day. I had Jim fly it and he agreed that it didn't seem to have much power. When he landed it, it hit a chuck hole and tore off the main gear and broke a wing hold down bolt support. I repaired it, but the blind nut that I put on the wing bolt

Page 9: River City RC Flyer · River City RC Flyer j j j j j j j j Decatur Model Airplane Club, Decatur, Alabama The Second Oldest Charted Club ... There is a stick and walkie talkies to

came lose. I finally got that fixed and made a take off. I don't know what happened, but it was so out of trim, that I couldn't control it. It was all over the sky and out at the far end of the corn field. I made at least six amazing saves as it was going to crash. (Luck rather than skill, I'm sure). It wanted to climb and I had all the down trim in it. Al kept saying, "reduce your power". I kept reducing it till it was going to stall. (Did you know when it's so slow it's about to stall, your control inputs have no effect?) I added some power and somehow controlled it enough to get it back to the field. I almost made it, but with a dead stick, it hit the last row of corn and went in. No damage, but the elevator was in the full up position. I know it wasn't like that when I took off. That plane needs some study. The wind was pretty strong so we all went home. I checked my shorts, and they were OK.Bob

6/18/12: Pre-Bob Report Note from Patrick: I got to the field around 6:15 and Al was already there and was just getting ready to fly his Wing Dragon. I unpacked and flew my SuperCub with the new landing gear configuration. I busted the original landing gear and part of the base on a hard landing last week, BUT Flyzone only sells the landing gear itself and not the base. So I improvised and used an old Cessna landing gear that I screwed into the base as well as used epoxy. Works fine. Al flew the Wing Dragon about 3 or 4 times before the wind started to pick up. Art showed up around 7:45 and started flying his Wing Dragon's. I flew 3 more times with my SuperCub and James Brown and Bob M showed up. I had to leave early to go home and do a “honey-do” (wash the garage – covered with grass from mowing before it go too hot). :-( But tomorrow's another day – looking good weather-wise.

It was beautiful this morning, but the wind was coming up strong about the time I got to the field. Al, Art, James and Patrick were there and electrics had been flown. Patrick left early and I didn't see either Al or him fly. I saw Art make several flights with his Wing Dragon. Don came later and he and James made several beautiful flights with their Four Star 40's. I made two flights with my Easy Sport 40 and am still having nose wheel problems, but it flies great in the air. Jim came by for a few minutes to watch. Tomorrow is supposed to be better with less wind and I plan to fly.Bob

6/19/12: We had a big bunch of Aces flying at the farm this morning. I got there a little before eight and I was the last one to come. The flyers included Al, Art, Don, Patrick, James and me. Once more I didn't see Al fly. He said he was there at six and flew nine flights. Patrick flew his large yellow cub and his Alpha. The cub seems to steer better on the ground now and he once again made a beautiful landing with the Alpha. I saw Art flying his Wing Dragon. He can take off across the field with that plane. Doesn't need much room. Don made several flights with his Four Star 40 and James made two with his Senior Falcon. That nine pound Falcon with a 46 Evolution really goes. I have a 4 stroke on mine and it's not nearly as fast. Jim finally got that big engine on his Edge to run. Seems he must block one of the exhausts off the muffler for it to run. Perhaps we will see it fly tomorrow. He did make several flights with his Four Star 60. I put my new pusher motor glider together that I got for Fathers Day and had Jim make a flight with it. It was a bugger till he got it trimmed up. He landed and I adjusted the rudder and aileron throws and we were going to try it again when re realized the wings needed glue. Snapping them together, just wasn't enough. I made a flight with my Senorita and my Easy Sport. The corn did not win today and no one had any mishaps. But I'm still having nose wheel problems. Perhaps I should stick to tail draggers.Bob

6/20/12: Another beautiful day to fly, but it got pretty gusty about 8:30. We had a good turn-out again today. Don brought his Grandson out and was flying his foamy when I got there. Patrick flew his

Page 10: River City RC Flyer · River City RC Flyer j j j j j j j j Decatur Model Airplane Club, Decatur, Alabama The Second Oldest Charted Club ... There is a stick and walkie talkies to

electric Alpha and Art flew his Wing Dragon. Jim had some muffler problems with his beautiful Mustang and couldn't fly it. He did make several flights with his Four Star 40. James brought a yellow Mustang that I had not seen before. It flew great. I glued the wings on my new Pusher motor glider and Jim took off from the ground. It flew with very little trim correction and Jim gave it to me. I flew for awhile and it was fine. The wind had really come up, so I asked Jim to land it for me. It's amazing how that plane will scoot along the ground. You can taxi it back to you. I must add some tape to the underside if I do much of that. After we all flew, Jim put on the sprayer and sprayed the field for weeds. The corn field is hungry, so be very careful. Oh yes, I forgot. I took two other planes to the field today and couldn't fly either. I had glued the two pieces of ply to the wing to alter the incidence and got some glue on the hold down bolt. Didn't think it was safe to fly with only one. On the Cessna I had turned the nose wheel around to point it more forward. Didn't realize the prop could hit the wheel. Tried to bend it back, but on the take-off roll, the nose wheel turned around 180. I just keep having nose wheel problems.Bob

6/21/12: Frequent Farm Flyer's report for Bob by Patrick: Art and Al were already on the field and flying when I got there around 6:30 this morning. I unpacked and was flying my SuperCub when Bob L. pulled in to socialize. I did the absolute best landing I have ever done - Al and Bob can attest to it. LOL Actually I did two absolute best landings on my first two flights - then flipped the SuperCub on both of my last flights. Bah Humbug! Art showed us his wife's new Pelican foamie and demonstrated how it flew. Very odd looking airplane but flies great. Al flew his Miss 2 and Leaping Lizard and Art was flying his Wing Dragons. Mark Blaske came and flew his powered glider then a Cessna 182 - which had a bit of trouble getting off the ground at first then his Corsair. He told me he bought the "Worlds Largest" P-40E ARF from Banana Hobby - it has a 79" wing span - you really need to go online and check out the pictures and video at www.bananahobby.com/2230.html. Art's wife, Doris, came and was practice flying an ultra-micro. We all know it's officially summer - but it's REALLY summer on the flying field when there is very little wind. We all packed it up and was out of there by 9 am.

6/22/12: Patrick Reporting for Bob: I got to the field about 6:18 and Al had already flown his flatout foamie a couple of times adjusting his expo on his AirTronics and was flying his Wing Dragon as I pulled in. I setup and flew my Alpha - beautiful flying weather - no wind, not too hot yet - perfect. Then Mark B. showed up and flew his generic Cessna 182 - nice flying aircraft. He said he could get used to this kind of retirement. Yes, I love it. Al flew his Super Miss and I flew my SuperCub without any taxi problems. Art showed up about then and helped Mark launch his HellCat - now that is a nice flying warbird. I tried to fly my SupeCub again but it just wanted to run in circles. Al finally held it on the ground and I revved up to full throttle and Al let go and it lifted right off the ground. I've got to work on my landing gear. Art flew his new Pelican with a new set of landing gear - it flew great. Mark then flew his P-47 - he had to put a lot of weight in the nose and had to do a lot of trimming. He said it was very quirky and was going to change out his receiver and transmitter so he could add expo and half rates. He did manage to get it on the ground with out any damage. I tried to fix my SuperCub landing gear with some rubber bands to keep them pulled in but it just flipped and loosened the propeller - back to the shop for the SuperCub. Jim showed up got all setup and started his Star 40 - revved it up and took off and in the middle of takeoff the engine sputtered and died. Jim didn't have enough airspeed to get it back to the field and the plane did a nose dive into the corn monster's mouth. I had seen about where it went down and as Jim fought through the corn, I wiggled the rudder. He found it - top half of the rudder was broken off and the wing tip slightly damaged and tore off the wing at the bolts. All in all, not too much damage considering the angle it hit. Jim said it didn't hit the ground and was hanging in the corn stalks - the reason for lesser damage. Mark flew his HellCat again, Art flew his Wing-

Dragon and Pelican several more times, Al flew his Super Miss a couple of times and I flew my Alpha twice more. It was getting hot and my batteries were depleted, so we all packed it up and headed out.

6/25/12: Another beautiful morning to fly and not too hot at 7:30. It was a little breezy, but not bad. When I got there Al, Art, James and Patrick were there and Jim came a bit latter. Patrick said he flew his big Cub and I saw him making several great flights with his electric Alpha. I must get to the field by six to see Al fly. By the time I get to the field, he has flown about six planes and is so tired he just sits in his lawn chair and watches us. I didn't see Art fly, but that was probably cause I was flying at the same time. Jim brought out one of the club trainers and made several flights with it. James just finishing scratch building a Four Star 40. It flew great and he said it only needed a tad of trim adjustment. I brought my Electric Senorita and my glow Cessna, but could not fly either one again today. Couldn't fly the Senorita last week due to glue on a wing hold down bolt and the nose wheel turned sideways on the Cessna. Fixed both planes over the week end. Couldn't fly them today, cause my new computer transmitter was still hanging on the wall in the garage. "Getting old is for the birds". But all was not lost. I had brought my new pusher motor glider with the 2.4 radio. Jim had flown it for me last week. I made two flights with it and it takes off from the ground with no problem. Hard to get it slow enough to land. But touch down a little fast and it slows fine. I think I'm going to like that plane.Bob

Fun Fly Saturday June 16, 2012Four soles braved the windy conditions and participated in the first fun fly of the season. Thanks to Mack Rogers for doing all the timing. In the Slalom event, Jim Ray won it with a time of 30.38 seconds, Carl Grover came in second with a time of 39.69 seconds. Jim Forthman and Jed Davis had DNFs. Next, we rolled the dice for how many loops to do. Jim F rolled a one and completed his take off, one loop, and landing in 36.53 seconds. Jim Ray finished second with 5 loops in 48.13 seconds and Carl had some trim problems and was third with 134.38 seconds. Then, the famous mystery time. Jim F flew for 67.75 seconds and was forced to land since the noisy end went quiet; Jim R few 148.46 seconds and Carl flew 267.59 seconds. Then we rolled the dice for the mystery time and it was 142 seconds which meant Jim R came in first followed by Jim F and Carl. Jed was unable to participate in the loop and mystery times do to a problem with his electric. Tickets, based on the finish in each event, and Jim F won the coveted gal of fuel. Since it was so windy, we sprayed and put down one bag of concrete mix (thanks Don N for the donation) and went home.

E-Fun Fly: Due to the heat, the E-Fun Fly for June was canceled.

Indoor Fun Flying: Grace Family Fun Flys (GFFF) at the Grace United Methodist Church in Huntsville is Sunday July 22 at 1-4pm.

Other Happenings: Futaba XFC We just got back and what a great week for an amazing event! The Futaba XFC www.xfc-rc.com/index.html once again went off without a hitch and the flying was nothing short of amazing! If your not familiar with this event, it has been around for 10 years and consists of tightly choreographed flying routines to music that is made up of basically smack precision 3D. The known round maneuvers are basically impossible but these guys pull them off so beautifully you would think it was easy! You read read the maneuver details here:www.xfc-rc.com/known-air.htmlwww.xfc-rc.com/known-heli.htmlPirouetting Globe with Piro direction change at each 180 degrees (half loop)Rolling Cuban 8 - with change of roll direction and forward to backward flying orientation on the down-lineVERTICAL Piro-Tumbling loop - With pirouette direction reversals at each tumble

I also watched Matt Chapman fly a REAL Embry-Riddle Cap Eagle 580 in formation with a 45% scale plane. That’s something I have never seen before and it was AWESOME!!www.mattchapman.com

The event consists of both Airplane and Heli class competition. It is an invitational only competition for the best pilots around the world. And their ability with an RC aircraft is nothing short of amazing.

The planes were the same mix of Yak55, Extra 300, Cap21, etc. Nothing really new in the airplane category from the last 5 years. PAU, 3DhobbyShop, Hanger 9, Aeroworks, Extreme Flight, J-Tec were all well represented in this class machine. If your interested in spending thousands and thousands of dollars on your next airplane purchase I’ve included the links below.

The airplanes are all in the 40%-45% class (125” or so wing span) and powered by around 120-170cc Engines. Desert Aircraft is extremely well represented as I didn’t see a single plane that wasn’t flying one of their engines. Most were DA-120 and DA-150. A couple were running the 200. WOW what a 4-cylinder monster that can really move!www.desertaircraft.com www.flypau.com www.3dhobbyshop.com www.hangar-9.com www.aero-works.net www.extremeflightrc.com www.jtecrc.com

However!!! This year the Heli side of things has changed. AND it has changed A LOT!!! Not a single Glow powered Helicopter was used for competition. They are all now electric. Mainly 12S setup. And not a single Flybar in the mix. All the machines are FBL and a pretty even mix of FBL units used from the BeastX, VBar, skookum robotics SK720

And Another Major change was Align was barely represented. The Big heli players were the GAUI X7, Younglbood Rave Ballistic FSO (700), Mikado Logo 600 and 700S, Compass 7HV,

Thunder Tiger Raptor G4, SAB Goblin, JR Vine E12, and a couple of others flying the T-rex 700E DFC

I got to see what my 7HV could do in the hands of a PRO and its incredible! Then he crashed his 7HV after doing an inverted blade scrape and we got to see the inside of it

The winner for the Airplane competition was Seth Arnold. He is also a EToc major competitor. 2nd place - Gabriel Altuz, 3rd place - Daniel Holman. Here is a video of one of Seth’s flights this weekend. 1st place - Seth Arnoldwww.youtube.com/watch?v=T0PQcQAHi20&feature=player_embedded

And the Winner for the Heli side was no other than Nick Maxwell by slaughtering the competition with Jamie Robinson coming in 2nd and Kyle Dahl pulling in 3rd.www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZvBRy0YO2KA

The night fly was great as well and Bobby Watts did his monster firework heli flying extravaganza again but I was mostly impressed with Jase Dussia’s Night Flight. He is flying an Extreme Flight 110" Yak and Aurora RC light system. And he is only 12 YEARS OLD!! Google him. He is amazing! I was a little disappointed as they didn’t have the large fireworks show like they did in the past but overall another great trip to XFC!!! I’m thinking Joe Nall for next years trip.

Of course if you want to see more then www.sksvideo.com is the place to order RC videos for any event.Mark Mullen
