Le scienza nucleare ha inizio con la scoperta del fenomeno della radioattività naturale da parte di Becquerel. Correva l’anno 1896. I successivi 40 anni di ricerca fondamentale sono segnati da un’impressionate susseguirsi di scoperte straordinarie: dalla trasmutazione artificiale degli elementi (E. Rutherford, a. 1919) alla spiegazione del decadimento beta (E. Fermi, a.1934) ed al consolidarsi dei nuovi paradigmi scientifici della fisica moderna: relatività e meccanica quantistica.
