We all have a choice for the future. We can make changes to the way we treat our environment,
or we will have to deal with the results of not doing so. Every day people throw out their garbage or use
materials that were built in big factories that affect the environment.
Now, watch the video . What problems do you see?
Take notes about the environmental problems you see.
INTRODUCTION - ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS
Environmental
problems I saw
in the video
BE READY TO SHARE!
DO YOU THINK THERE ARE OTHER ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS , TOO ?
4 051-eng-wb-T4-(Environment Project)
You could go days without food and hours without water, but you would last only a few minutes
without air. On average, each of us breathes over 3,000 gallons of air each day and drinks 1-3 liters of
water per day. You must have air, water, and food to live.
However, did you know that breathing polluted air or drinking dirty water can make you sick?
Isn’t that a good enough reason to start thinking about the environment?
Write 3 reasons why you think we should pay more attention to our environment.
1. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________
2. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________
3. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________
What are some ways that people try to help with these problems?
1. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________
2. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________
3. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________
WHY SHOULD WE HELP THE ENVIRONMENT?
5 051-eng-wb-T4-(Environment Project)
1.Water Pollution: Pollution of fresh water used inside houses and for drinking. People are also worried
about pollution of oceans, rivers, and lakes. Related problems; ocean dumping, oil spills, and wastewater.
2. Soil Pollution: Another problem is soil pollution by waste and pesticides that farmers use to get rid of
insects on their plants.
3. Air pollution: Air pollution has been a big topic for more than 20 years. A lot of people are worried about indoor and outdoor air quality, carbon dioxide that comes from cars / vehicles and factories.
4. Saving Wildlife : Many people are also concerned about saving wildlife and connected environmental
problems, such as endangered animals / plants , animals /plants becoming extinct , loss of corals, hunting,
and loss of natural animal habitats .
ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS IN THE WORLD
From water pollution to global warming, environmental problems affect every person, animal, and
community in the entire planet. There is a lot of evidence that shows the devastating effect humans
have on the environment. Now, more people are taking steps to protect the environment and educate
others by looking at the top environmental problems. What are they?
Can you guess the meanings of the words in blue from the text? Match the words to their meanings.
1. Endangered ( ) a. washing, cleaning or toilet water used in buildings
2. Extinct ( ) b. rubbish, garbage, waste
3. Corals ( ) c. oil going into oceans / seas because of an accident
4. Pesticides ( ) d. animals/ plants not seen anymore—no more on earth
5. Wastewater ( ) e. chemicals that are used to kill insects on plants.

6 051-eng-wb-T4-(Environment Project)

animals.
2. The __________________ of the factory’s waste caused the pollution in the river.

Our environment project is all about opening our minds and thinking about how we change the environment
around us. What we want to do is create a road to a better future and we want you to pave that road.
HERE ARE THE OPTIONS:
1) Interview a teacher: You can set up a time with a Science teacher to have a discussion or have
an interview on the problems of environment. Go with your questions & make sure you take notes.
Take pictures and prepare a poster about this discussion. Be ready to present it to class.
2) Presentation of an environmental problem & solution: You may use PowerPoint, iMovie,
piccolage, Prezi or a poster to show your ideas. Explain the problem and show ways to solve it in
your presentation. You may want to show the problem with simple experiments too. If you want
to choose this option, you can find the useful links and related QR codes on page 15. (Remember to
show references for your research)
3) Song / Poem / Drama Performance: Create a song/poem/a short drama
performance to explain ways to save the environment. Be creative and inspirational.
You may show the lyrics of the song / poem on the screen during your presentation.
4) Forest clean up: In your own time, you can choose to organize a clean up day with your
friends/family. You may choose to go to a forest or park and take before and after pictures of the
area. Later on you will need to prepare a poster/ppt/video to show us;
*what the problem was *why you did this *what the results were.
5) Planting trees: Research for a place to find the best area to plant a tree. Organize a day to
plant trees with your family/friends. You will need to document this through photos on a poster
or ppt and a short presentation on why you choose this option. (*what the problem was *why
you did this *what the results were. )
