WHAT IS RISK MANAGEMENT?Risk Management is a field of study for uncertain future outcomes. In the investment area, this activity involves the measurement of the risk and the return associated with investments and the decision making for the investment of savings.

In the insurance field, this activity involves the measurement and value assessment of uncertain events and outcomes that affect the normal activity. The identification, analysis, assessment, control, avoidance, minimization, and elimination of unacceptable risks is risk management.

Actuarial science and the role of actuaries is essential to effective risk management. The actuarial sciences combine mathematical and statistical methods with the theory, modeling, and instruments of finance to assess and manage risk.

Actuaries are generously compensated and certified in their field through intensive education and experience. To become certified, they must demonstrate thei

r competence by passing a series of professional exams.

RKMG ACADEMYThe Risk Management concentration at UTEP’s College of Business Administration is heavily quantitative and includes calculus, probability theory, statistics, finance, economics, and business analytics. Students will be able to build complex Excel spread sheets, write VBA Excel macros, create statistical and forecast models in SAS and R, and manipulate and organize large datasets.

Alongside the degree plan, COBA offers the Prudential Risk Management Academy. This Academy is to help students develop leadership skills to set them apart from their peers. Students will also receive business and interpersonal skills that will be developed through executive visits, professional workshops, interactions with other universities both domestic and international.

The Academy will ensure professional readiness by offering internship opportunities and real world employment opportunities for students participating in the program that meet the requirements.
