Dear friends, New York Cares makes it possible for New Yorkers to play a direct role in addressing our city’s most pressing needs through meaningful, on-the-ground service. In this dynamic and prosperous city, millions still face poverty, hunger, and homelessness. In 2018, caring New Yorkers again stepped out into our community to tackle these challenges and impact neighborhoods in all five boroughs.

As the challenges facing our city continue to evolve, we are at the ready, creating new programs with opportunities for volunteers and donors that address the most pressing needs. This year, for example, we launched our first bilingual volunteer program to help ensure that language barriers do not prevent individuals from getting resources they desperately need. We also started a new community engagement initiative to enable parents and caregivers to volunteer in their children’s schools.

Volunteer tax preparers helped file more than 15,000 returns for low-income families, and our College Access programs provided 3,000 high school students with the tools they need to thrive in school. Volunteers also enabled hundreds of green card holders to complete their naturalization applications. Collectively, this work is having a meaningful and measurable impact, both on individual lives and entire communities.

These high-impact programs, developed and implemented through engagement and collaboration with our Community Partners, are just a sliver of what we do. New York Cares offers more than 1,600 projects each month where volunteers help individuals meet basic needs, revitalize public spaces, and increase access to educational resources and economic empowerment.

Thank you to all our staff, donors, volunteers, and Community Partners. Your support makes it possible for us to work together each day to build a city that affords opportunity to all New Yorkers.

Staff Members

College AccessThe Need: In high-income NYC neighborhoods, the percentage of individuals with bachelor’s degrees or above is as high as 85%. In lower-income areas, it’s as low as 7%.

Our Impact: Our College Access programs provide free SAT tutoring, financial aid workshops, and college application assistance to high school students. In 2018, we served 3,255 participants and our SAT Prep students increased their scores by an average of 100 points.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)The Need: The average tax return costs an individual $200 in fees.

Our Impact: New York Cares provides over 300 trained volunteers to 5 of the largest VITA tax providers in NYC.

HungerThe Need: Over 1.2 million people in New York City are food insecure. In 2018, 34% of agencies addressing food insecurity in NYC had to turn people away. Nearly half of all soup kitchens and food pantries in NYC operate on just $25,000 per year.

Our Impact: In 2018, our volunteers served 321,384 meals, delivered 214,872 meals to seniors and the chronically ill, and packed 188,458 pantry bags. Volunteer contributed 100,000 volunteer hours, valued at nearly $3.5 million, to addressing hunger in our city.
