Rector’s Reflections
Dear Resurrec on People,
We all love ge ng a fresh start, a “do‐over.” It brings us relief from the past and hope in the future. New beginnings can be exci ng and they can be scary. Nature takes us through these transi ons all the me, and yet we resist the inevitability of change. When we persevere through our dis‐ease we find ourselves li ed up and accompanied by holy pres‐ence, and we find the blessings that only God can bring.
Our journey as Resurrec on has been about new be‐ginnings – literally and spiritually. Our name means finding new life in God’s love! No such journey is without difficul es, and this one literally started out of two parishes on the verge of closing, a kind of death, pu ng themselves in the hands of God. In this culture, to our peril we resist or refuse the truth that is at the heart of our Chris an faith: there is no Resurrec on without death.
The Good News that Jesus Christ embodied and taught is that death of any kind, physical, social, or spiritual, is not the enemy. Death is the gateway to new beginnings, and God is present in all deaths and beginnings. Indeed, as Meister Eckhart wrote, “From all eternity God lies on a maternity bed giving birth. The essence of God is birthing.”

A Word from our Warden
Dear Friends,
New Beginnings! What a wonderful theme for this month’s “Rise & Shine” and for the start of the fall season at Resurrec on. We have prayed for ways to share our ministry with the sur‐rounding community and the ideas that have surfaced are evident in our fall schedule.
Game Night and the use of Rite II for Sunday worship have already been introduced. Both have been welcomed and enjoyed by parishion‐ers.
The Parish Potluck, an annual event, took place on Saturday evening, September 12th. Twenty‐three people gathered in the undercro to en‐joy good food and fellowship. There was a wide selec on of entrees, salads and desserts offered to all who a ended. Mother Chris na provided a li le game to make us all aware of the work necessary to keep Resurrec on a fully, func on‐ing parish. We were asked to iden fy the “apostles” who so willingly performed these tasks. Many thanks to everyone who brought food, helped set‐up and clean‐up, and did their part to make the evening a success.
The early fall Adult Study will be held on two consecu ve Wednesday evenings – September 30th and October 7th. The subject will be “Forgiveness and Reconcilia on.”
The Pet Blessing, always a popular event, takes place on Saturday, October 3rd, 11am‐12noon.
Our first Cel c Eucharist is celebrated on Thurs‐day, October 15th, at 7:00 PM. You can read more about each of these events elsewhere in this newsle er. All who are interested and able to a end any of the above are encouraged to do so.
Most of you already know our parish secretary, Marie Callahan, celebrated her 90th birthday on Thursday, September17th. You may not know
Summer brought me sunshine! Some days I bent down to li my 91 year old mother from a wheel‐chair: "One, two, three..." we would count to‐gether. Other days I bent down to my one year old granddaughter: "Up, Katherine?" And her tousled head grinned back and her chubby arms rose to my outstretched hands. Both my Marmee and my "K" hugged me. And through tears, I bless the con nuum of grace ‐ the abiding strength of my Mother's love and the future love of my granddaughter. MPG
Being able to enjoy the town pool was a gi of giving smiles and hellos to those whose names you did not even have to know . . .thank you! JvL
Thank you King Kullen for your $100 check from your “Care and Share” program. Bring in your tapes from the Garden City Park and Manhasset stores so we can submit them for further re‐wards. RH
Don Josling delivered “Back to School” supplies to Astoria Bank for distribu on to children in need. Thank you, Resurrec on people, for your contribu ons. MC
“Never lose the opportunity of seeing anything beau ful, for beauty is God’s handwri ng.” RH by Ralph Waldo Emerson
Marie celebrated her 48th Service Anniversary in June. She has held the posi on of parish secretary longer than anyone else in the dio‐cese. We congratulate her on both occasions and want her to know how very blessed we feel to have her here. She is an inspira on to all of us. God Bless you, Marie.
Please join me in praying God blesses our en‐deavors as we move forward in a new begin‐ning of Resurrec on living.
Blessings,
Joan

(Rector's Reflec ons from page 1)
We discover this for ourselves as we learn how to surrender to the deaths in our lives. In surrender comes a sacred peace that allows us to wait, with open hands, hearts and minds, for signs of new life. If we neither force it nor refuse it, God’s Grace is made known to us in our wai ng. The more we al‐low ourselves to enter this mys cal cycle of birth, life, and death, the more we know God’s presence and love, and that very essence within. In our unique ways we are all co‐creators with God of new begin‐nings, and companions in endings, channels of Divine Love that always brings new beginnings.
Let us go gently into the transi ons that the seasonal changes bring, and draw from our liturgies and our faith the power to be guided and comforted and en‐couraged in our journeys.
Peace and Every Good,
Mother Chris na
The Book of Common Prayer
Why have we returned to using the Book of Common Prayer (BCP) in worship? It is very popular with long‐ me Episcopalians, yet can be con‐
fusing and aliena ng to those not raised in this tradi‐on. An all‐inclusive worship booklet, like ones we
have been using for several years, allows for much easier par cipa on by all. And yet there is a differ‐ence. When we hold the BCP in our hands we are holding the prayers, liturgies, and stories that bind us through me, and define us as Episcopalians living our Anglican Spirituality.
Yes, it is possible and valuable to experience this es‐sence in many formats. We will return to more ac‐cessible worship booklets on Sunday mornings from
me to me, as the Spirit leads. Meanwhile, let us savor the beauty and holiness of the book that de‐fines us. In the coming months we will have oppor‐tuni es to learn, share and grow in our understand‐ing of this masterpiece of faith lived in everyday reali‐ty. ~ CvL
Pray with your words or learn the body prayers. Sit peacefully, rest in the silences and listen to
the music. Sing, play a Bodhran or other hand drum. Receive Holy Communion or a blessing.
Cel c Worship
Every Third Thursday at 7:00 pm Beginning October 15th
What is Cel c Worship?
Cel c worship was best made known as a Chris an way of faith through Saint Patrick. “To wish to learn from the Cel c Chris an is to wish to sense the pas‐sionate presence of God in all life. It is to find God in the ordinary events of life, love, ea ng, working, playing…. The ancient Celts believed that the other world was always close to us and became apparent in the ‘thin mes’ and thin places’ in which the veil that usually obscured them was li ed.” (Timothy Joyce, a 20th century Irish Roman Catholic priest.)
How can I par cipate?
Bring a candle in dish or stand to help illuminate the worship space (you may take it back with you). Bring your favorite symbol of life or crea on, or
carry one of ours to the altar, in the opening prayer.
