Stephen Ministry in the Verdesby Debbie Etcheson The Community Church of the Verdes and St Dominic Catholic Mission would like to help residents of the Verdes and the surrounding area to be aware of what might be a needed and helpful service. The Stephen Ministry program has been available here in the Verdes for a number of years; and yet, as we continue to have new neighbors moving in to this wonderful community, we have realized a need to introduce this ministry to those who might not know about it.Why the name Stephen? In the Book of Acts, Stephen was chosen to provide caring ministry to those in need. Since the time of the Apostles, caring ministry has been considered a hallmark of the Christian faith community. What is a Stephen Minister?Stephen Ministers are laypeople trained to provide one-to-one, confidential, Christ-centered care. They have a compassionate heart for those who are hurting, and they’ve been equipped with caring ministry skills by their congregation’s Stephen Leaders. Their training requires 50 hours of weekly training sessions which include pre-class reading, devotions, lecture, video presentation, discussion and skill practice. Once this layperson has completed the training, he/she is commissioned as a Stephen Minister and is then allowed to have a care receiver. Twice a month, Stephen Ministers gather with their Stephen Leaders for supervision and continuing education. A Stephen Minister typically has one care receiver at a time and meets with that person (men with men; women with women) once a week to listen, care, pray, encourage, and offer emotional and spiritual support. How many congregations have Stephen Ministry?More than 12,000 congregations have Stephen Ministry—representing over 170 denominations, all 50 states, all 10 Canadian provinces, and 29 other countries. Many of these congregations have had Stephen Ministry going for more than 30 years. In what types of situations do Stephen Ministers provide care?Grief, divorce, cancer, hospitalization, physical rehabilitation, long-term care, chronic illness, terminal illness, job loss, loss of a home, military deployment, onset of a disability, loneliness, spiritual crisis and other life strugglesDo Stephen Ministers care for people outside a congregation?Yes. Stephen Ministers often provide care for people in the broader community, enhancing and expanding a congregation’s outreach in a powerful way. One need not be a member of the Community Church of the Verdes or of St. Dominic Catholic Mission to seek and receive Stephen Ministry care.Stephen Ministers: “The After People”...Stephen Ministers come into a person’s life immediately after a crisis has hit and then provide care for as long after as needed. Stephen Ministers are there:●After the phone call you hoped you’d never get.●After the funeral, when everyone has left and the emotions you’ve held at bay come crashing in on you.●After the relationship falls apart and the bottom falls out of your life●After the doctor says, “I’m sorry, but there’s nothing more we can do.”●After the nursing home director shakes your hand and says “Welcome to your new home.”●After the gavel comes down and a loved one is in serious trouble.●After your family and friends have heard your story one too many times but you still need to talk it out.If you would like more information please contact:Reverend Dr. Cathy Northrup of Community Church of the VerdesStephen Leaders: John & Cary Pasnau, Laura Spolum, Gary & Debbie Etcheson
