I received a delightful letter from Grevis regarding Opening Day and wish to share it with all Members. It reads: “Dear John, Norm, MembersWhat a great opening day. Congratulations to all, especially for the special invitation to Marg and myself and for the welcome gift.It was a great opportunity to catch up with so many old friends and meet new ones.Best wishes for the coming seasonGrevis”We have received 45 responses to the Member Survey on the Five Year Business Plan. It is not too late to contribute if you wish. Thank you for your input. The responses have been tabulated and we will analyse the responses before deciding the next step. We will keep you informed.

Communicating with Club Members remains an ongoing problem. It was raised at the last Board meeting concerning the difficulty in reaching all Members with issues of Rink Link and other information of interest. Efforts are being made to overcome the problems by updating the email address listand ensuring that Members not on email can either pick up a copy of Rink Link or have each issue posted. We are also working towards regular issues of Rink Link and intermediate smaller bulletins, at least monthly, to improve the information stream to all Members.

The quotes “Hearing it so, can make it so”, “If you think you can, you can” and “Think it, see it, do it” are particularly relevant to the game of bowls. Skips should always explain what they require of their players. While it may be ok to wave an arm out to the left or right in some situations, it is not in a tight situation. Players need to know, “am I trying to turn a bowl in, out, through, if so by how much or is it the jack I’m going for? Is the bowl I’m looking for a bowl in front, a bowl behind or is it Jack high? Is the Jack touching the bowl or in fact 10 cm behind? One can’t picture a shot without having some idea of what’s up front, and where exactly he/she should be focusing their attention.

This however doesn’t mean the skip should go off drawing an entire landscape picture to confuse or delay the player at the other end. A simple “You are looking for an inside edge, a foot over” would do. The player then has a good idea of what is required and has some-thing to visualize before stepping onto the mat. Thus “seeing” and “hearing” it, can make it so. Magic happens.

After a very successful Opening Day we have been straight into bowls with Wednesday Mixed and Open Triples and Brekky 'n Bowls, as well as our practice games on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

The Bittern Market Medley was a great success with eight teams enjoying the interaction and competition of the day. The first fine weather for weeks made it an enjoyable day. Gary Farnsworth’s team won the day with Charlie Burgess’ group the runners up. Meg Tucker and ger team provided excellent morning and afternoon tea. Many thanks to behind the scenes helpers Catherine Holden, Moira Hill, Tim and Margaret Smith, Anne French and Arthur Harris.

Brekky 'n Bowls on Sunday 18th September and Sunday 16th October have been very well attended, with as many people enjoying breakfast as there were breakfasting and bowling. It is always a fun day, and Betty, Joy, Jacky M and John S always provide a delicious start to the day. They are a great team, and are often joined

by Suzie Grindrod as well. Thank you guys and gals! The next one is on Sunday 13th November, so keep an eye out for the sheet if you would like to come.

Please remember to get yourself and your team organised for our Club Championships. Singles have commenced, and the finals of both the Men's and Ladies' Singles will be played at 1pm on Sunday 18th December. We will be organising a sausage sizzle to enjoy on the day, and we are hoping to have a good crowd to watch the games. Please keep the day free to give your support.

We have several Tournaments coming up, the first of which is Harcourts Triples, played at Somerville this year, on Sunday 20th November. On Friday 25th November we are hosting visitors from the Northern Rivers District of New South Wales for bowls, lunch and dinner. More about these two events will be advertised in the coming weeks.

Happy bowling!

RL Suzie, what would you say is your great-est achievement – apart from being a mum and Nana of course?Suzie I’ve been fortunate to ‘fall into’ some fabulous roles in my working life, and it’s all happened without attaining the University education I’d imagined (as had my Dad). I always wanted to be a journalist, but after matriculation I found it wasn’t so easy to fulfil that dream. My first job was writing advertising copy for Myer ads; I then

moved on to work in Public Relations, Sponsorship and Event Management. Right place, right time, knowing the right people, hard work and nouse were my ‘degree’. One of the ‘right people’ helped me find a job at Telstra; another got me into Penguin Publishing. I wrote a book, which Penguin published, and I guess that has become a great achievement. The greatest though, is sharing my life with Grant Powell.

80,000 Collingwood Fans meet at the MCG for a "Collingwood Fans Are Not Stupid" Convention.Eddie says, "We are all here today to prove to the world that Collingwood fans are not stupid. Can I have a volunteer?"Dane Swan gingerly works his way through the crowd and steps up to the stage.Eddie asks him, "What is fifteen plus fifteen?"After 15 or 20 seconds Swan says, "Eighteen!"Obviously everyone is a little disappointed. Then all 80,000 Collingwood Fans start chanting,"GIVE HIM ANOTHER CHANCE!GIVE HIM ANOTHER CHANCE!"Eddie says, "Well we’ve got 80,000 of you in one place and the global media here, I think we can give him another chance."So he asks, "What is seven plus seven?" After nearly 30 seconds he eventually says, "Ninety!"Eddie looks down and just lets out a dejected sigh - everyone is disheartened.Swanny starts crying and the 80,000 Collingwood fans begin to yell and wave their hands shouting,"GIVE HIM ANOTHER CHANCE!GIVE HIM ANOTHER CHANCE!"Eddie, unsure whether or not he is doing more harm than good, says, "OK! OK! Just one more chance...What is two plus two?"Swanny closes his eyes, and after a whole minute eventually says,"Four!"Throughout the stadium pandemonium breaks out as all 80,000 Collingwood fans jump to their feet, wave their arms, stamp their feet and scream..."GIVE HIM ANOTHER CHANCE! GIVE HIM ANOTHER CHANCE!"
